Remedy: Dealers will replace the motor-driven power steering electric power pack, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 19, 2024. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC319.
The following are consumer-reported complaints filed with NHTSA. These are unverified allegations and are not proof that any defect exists.
Sunroof exploded while driving. No rocks or anything hit it. Glass is pointing upward.
NHTSA #11735579
Sunroof on the vehicle shattered without being struck by projectile or road debris. The area where we were driving had no other cars near us at the time of the incident. There was no sound of something hitting then shattering, it just exploded. Examination of the sunroof did not reveal any points of impact, research done online has shown multiple other Kia Sportage owners with the same issue. Spontaneous shattering of the panoramic sunroof.
NHTSA #11734569
As I was driving to work this morning, I heard a loud bang. The sun roof blew up. Based on how the glass is raised, it looks like it blew from the inside out.
NHTSA #11731454
While highway driving, suddenly and without warning, the panoramic sunroof shattered and exploded. Nothing hit the vehicle. Yes, it is available i took a photo. Yes, the Kia Southern Pines, NC saw the vehicle and damage.
NHTSA #11707822
The component that failed is the sunroof (glass) The sunroof exploded while driving down the street, glass splattered in my head, face, and body. I almost wrecked because it sounded like a gunshot. The component is being inspected by the insurance adjuster and dealership on 10/23/25. There was no warning lamp, message or other symptom of the problem prior to the explosion.
NHTSA #11695094
Driving, just left my house and turned on to the road. Sunroof shattered for no apparent reason. Owned vehicle for a year and half, no previous issues. No prior damage. No other vehicle around, clear skies and it shattered. The moving part, not the stationary part.
NHTSA #11687972
Sunroof unexpectedly shattered at highway speed with no vehicles or obstructions present.
NHTSA #11690016
The panoramic sunroof glass spontaneously shattered upon entry in to the vehicle and closing the driver door. If the privacy cover closed, my daughter would have been showered with glass. I have tried reaching out to a Kia Dealer directly but have not received a response. I did notify my insurance so there would be a record and I am waiting for an adjuster to come out to look at the vehicle and document it. No warnings.

i BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN FEBRUARY 2025 AND THE WINDSHEILD CRACKED (ROCK HIT IT) WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF PURCHASE. IT IMMEDIATELY SPREAD TO BE IN MY VIEW OF THE ROAD WHICH WAS A SAFETY CONCERN FOR ME AND OTHERS, AND TOO BIG TO HAVE REPAIRED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERS BODY SHOP AND HAD REPLACED. AFTER REPLACED, I DROVE IT APPROX. 5O MILES AND SAME THING HAPPENED. I HAVE READ OF LAWSUITS AROUND DEFECTIVE WINDSHEILD ON THIS MODEL. I TOOK IT BACK TO LANDERS KIA IN LITTLE FOR THEM TO INSPECT IT AND IT IS STILL CRACKED AS I DO NOT HAVE ANOTHER $500.00 TO HAVE REPLACED AGAIN. I HAVE PICTURE OF SECOND CRACK IF YOU NEED IT?

I have had no accident. In my opinion the 2024 Kia Sportage has a dangerous fire safety problem. This car has no way to open the back tailgate from inside. No release inside the car or on the key. I an accident occurs and the driver should pass out and could not get the key to someone, there is no way inside the car to release the back door to escape. If the car should catch on fire you would have to breakout the windows and then you will still have to take the door off to get to the people if driver can not hand you the key .There was an auto opener on the 2023 but not this model ..unless you purchase it special, which no one told me this when I purchased this car or I would not have purchased it .I even called back 3 months later trying to find out how to open my door and first was told by a dealer it was on my key as I tried to find it and called the dealership two additional times and asked at the dealership 2 more when I went for maintenance. made a 3rd trip and finally spoke to someone at the dealership who just now told me there is no key or inside access to the trunk. The dealers did not know and had me searching to use the key and the drivers door section. I think there should be a recall and they should have to put this on the car for it is a great safety hazard if you or your child is trapped inside a wrecked car. They should at least tell you this before purchasing and I would not have bought and paid cash for this car. NOW they want me to pay for this ? It is a fire SAFETY HAZARD. They need to make this right! Cars have had a way to get into the rear on key and from inside for 20 years now Please consider this before people dies in a accident due to this. I did call the company and they seem unconcerned. They need to get this feature on my car without charging me for it.If this was a standard feature on the 2023 then it should be on the newer cars ..It is all about money and not our safety. Why would you take a feature this important off a vehicle?

Vehicle mpg does not match estimated mpg statement on sales sticker. This has been a consistent problem from date of purchase. Dealer and car manual claim it would improve gradually. It has not. I think they over estimated mpg and/or the milage calculator is defective. I have been to dealer 3 times, they do not make records of my concerns and tell me that 5 mpg off is normal. I have wide fluctuating numbers from the display whether running on battery or gas.

This deals with auto locks on the vehicle. The doors are supposed to lock when the vehicle is put in gear, and unlock when it is put in park. That happens most of the time, perhaps 75% of the time. When it doesn’t work properly, the doors remain locked. Passengers can get out, but unopened doors remained locked, and if you try to reopen a door from which someone just excited the vehicle, they will find that the door is locked, and they can not open the door. This is mostly an annoying situation, but it could be life threatening under the right circumstances, such as a child in the back seat needing to be removed in an emergency situation. Both the salesman and the service department told me that a lot of owners have reported this problem. When I called Kia’s 1-800 customer support, they know nothing about the problem. Additionally, a quick internet search confirmed that it is widespread. I have had the vehicle to the dealership four times for repair. The first three times, the service department said they couldn’t do any repairs because the problem did not duplicate for them. The fourth time, I drove into the service bay, got out, and all the doors were locked. Not good enough, even though it happened right there and was easily verified. They said they had to remove the door panel, hook up some piece of equipment, and then have it happen. Well, it didn’t, so they did nothing. They said that Kia will not repair it without it happening while hooked up. Obviously, their warranty is a joke, but it goes beyond that, as this is a potential safety hazard.

Panoramic sunroof shattered while driving - there were no rocks or falling objects
NHTSA #11615611
I was driving on the 99tollway about 70mph and I heard what I can only describe as an explosion sound and when I looked in my rearview mirror I saw glass flying from my car. My panoramic sunroof exploded, leaving a large hole in the middle of the sunroof. There were no car around me thankfully and nothing struck my car prior to the explosion sound. No sensors went off in my car and my car did not alert me that there were any issues with the roofing system.

I was driving on the highway and had set the cruise control to 76. I then pushed the plus button once to increase the cruise control speed and the cruise control increased immediately to 110 mph. I braked right away which stopped the acceleration but could see it was still set at 110 mph. I pushed the button to turn the cruise control off. When I pushed it again, it went immediately back to 110. I tired multiple times over the next 45 minutes to turn the cruise control back on but it always went immediately to 110 mph.
NHTSA #11718151
Cruise control suddenly jumped to 110mph. Could not adjust the speed. Could only turn off cruise control. It happened several times in a row. Car would speed up until I hit the brake.
NHTSA #11625813
I purchased my car 10/12/24. On 11/2/24, one of the first times I had used cruise control, I was traveling between 40-45mph in a residential area and turned on my cruise control. The car immediately set the CC speed to exactly 110 mph and would not respond to the down arrow to adjust speed down. I paused CC and resumed and the setting remained at 110mph. I am not sure what caused the setting to finally clear as I was pretty frantically pressing buttons at that point. I do have a photograph of this instance and I have added it to this report. A brief google search confirmed multiple Kia drivers reporting the same issue with this line of vehicles. On 11/5/24 I took my car in to Olathe Kia's service department, asking them to investigate this issue. The service department reported that they found no error codes and had no repair to offer for the CC issue.

I am reporting an incident of sudden unintended acceleration of my 2024 Kia Sportage plug-in Hybrid. On Oct. 11, 2024, my wife was parking the vehicle in a lot near our home when the car suddenly accelerated, only stopping when it crashed into the side of a building. My wife was not injured, though the vehicle was damaged. She insists she did not accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake. I have reported the incident to Kia, and we have filed a claim with our insurance company.
NHTSA #11619422
On Oct. 11, 2024, I was pulling into a parking spot when my vehicle suddenly accelerated. My foot was not on the accelerator. I braked but not in time to stop the car before it hit the side of a building. I was not injured, but do not want to use drive the vehicle until I understand what happened and whether this sudden unintended acceleration defect can be fixed.

On three occasions in the last 1000 miles, my 2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid's Cruise Control has jumped to 110 mph and refused to accept user input. Turning Cruise Control off and back on again, it jumps back to 110mph immediately (got video). Only stopping the vehicle, shifting the vehicle completely off, and restarting the vehicle seems to fix this. Have read multiple forums that say others have experienced this. This is a major software and safety issue that needs to be corrected
NHTSA #11607741
I bought the car in July 2024. After approximately 2 months after taking possession I took the car on a trip. While driving on the highway I engaged the cruise control. The vehicle immediately set to 110mph. I immediately turned it off and didn't drive that fast. I tried to reengage the cruise control multiple times and the speed still went to 110mph. I've taken the vehicle to a Kia dealership the car was there for 2 months. There is no fix at this time. Just told not to use the cruise control. The dealership told me it's a known problem.
NHTSA #11629616
While driving on a road with a speed of 55, the driver pressed the cruise control bottom and set the cruise speed with the steering wheel cruise setting buttons (up/down). However the car set the cruise speed at 110 MPH, the driver noticed this as the car started rapidly accelerating past expected targets for cruise control. The system clearly displayed a target of 110MPH, but it is unclear why the knob controls set the target in at this value - if for example it received a signal for “up speed” that got stuck or aimed too many increments up for the button up press for the speed control target adjustment. Turning the cruise off and on didn’t clear the cached target and restarted the 110 target. The correction was to reset the whole target manually and or manually decrement by-mile down from the 110 setting. This may be indicative of a switch or software risk, or defect in cruise and speed control systems. Unclear. It has only surfaced once but this is a brand new purchase only about 3 weeks old in use.

6” Snow ice storm & negative degree temps 12/13/25 used heated windshield deicer. On 12/15 driving to work on a country road no other traffic, heard pop cracking noise above my head checked sunroof snow ice melting no visible cracks thought noise from thawing ice. Parked vehicle in my home garage while I went out of town. Returned home 12/22 found large crack origination point in front windshield originating in glass down the middle of rear view mirror sensor housing black box mounted on inner windshield the crack spans from top middle to bottom of black box glass over to right center half of windshield. Believe this is a manufacture defect design flaw low quality integrity of glass weaker than standard glass making it more susceptible to temperature changes or minor impact. Entire crack feels smooth interior exterior glass as if the crack is in the inner layers of glass windshield. Due to multi complaints & prior class action lawsuit regarding manufacture defect of KIA windshields I am reporting my complaint as it is quite similar to others complaints, issues & lawsuits. The massive crack in windshield is a driving safety hazard & a manufacture defect that needs recalled & resolved before injury or death occurs. KIA must acknowledge, issue recall &/or post a bulletin, accept responsibility this is a manufactures defect, notify the public and replace the windshields under Good Faith Customer Relations Warranty

What I assume happened to my wiper blades: In December of 2024 we got a lot of heavy snow. I turned on my car to heat it up while I worked on cleaning off the outside of the car. My wipers were set to auto so the car automatically tried to clear the snow from the windshield. I did not notice this since they didn't move due to the snow weight. Once snow was removed I noticed the wipers did not work so I brought it in for the dealership to look at it. They determined that the gear had been stripped and needed to be replaced and informed me that this is not covered under warranty. Since the repair I have not driven the car in snow, no longer use the auto wiper function, and am sure to clean off all snow/ice before I turn the blades on. End of February I turned the wipers on to clean the windshield by pulling lever back. No fluid came out, the blades went back and forth a few times and then only one blade started coming up while the other lay in its off position. Determined that my car is not holding any wiper fluid (unsure if this was not connected properly during last repair). Have an appointment to get the car looked at again.

The contact owns a 2024 Kia Sportage. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the windshield cracked without impact. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer; the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 23,000.

On 4/42024 I was driving home and there was a mix of rain and snow. My riverside windshield wiper went out of sync and slammed into the passenger side damaging the blade, it then went over the edge and was stuck on the windshield frame overhanging the side view mirror. It made it very difficult to drive. When driving behind any other vehicle ot creates a scenario where you can't see how far or close you are to another vehicle. When I got to the dealership to have it looked at, they tried to blame it on a buildup of the wet snow that happened overnight. I cleared off my car completely before going to work. The fix was they had to tighten the linkage. While I was there, I overheard them complain in the service department that they had a lot of wiper related incidents that day.

Not really sure what happened, but last week the temperature suddenly dropped below freezing and there was ice built up on the windshield. We started the car and turned on the windshield defrost at high and we began to drive the car after the windshield was clear of ice and about 10 minutes later we noticed a crack develop on the windshield going from where the hot air from the defrost was hitting the windshield. and through out the day we noticed the crack grow exactly along the line where the defrost air would hit it. The crack is connected to a 2 mm round spot where a rock chip hit the windshield a few weeks ago but the crack seems to have started because of the temperature difference that was caused by the windshield defrost.

The contact owns a 2024 Kia Sportage. The contact stated that while driving at undisclosed speeds, or while the vehicle was parked, the engine intermittently hesitated and the vehicle almost shut off. The contact stated that the START/STOP button was depressed to shut off the vehicle; however, the button became inoperable. The vehicle was turned off and restarted to resume normal operation. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 18,700.

When we were entering a major intersection, car strolled and rolled forward and stopped 3/4 thru the intersection. It would not restart immediately while cars were speeding by on both sides. It finally started. This is the second occurrence we took the car into the KIA dealership. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Since day one of my purchase I noticed All warning light turned on and goes off while driving over an hour I thought it was normal as it’s my first Kia so continue to drive and it did same when ever I go on long drive and after 2 months it started vehicle to loose power and I always has to stop and restart the engine. Continued with same issue and all of a sudden it stopped on interstate and this time the car bogged out and engine shut off which was a dangerous situation for my whole family as cars behind would have hit us and cause multiple car collision I called my dealership to add this issue on my appointment for first service so it can be taken care of and I dropped off the car at dealership and after road test they confirmed that yes it has issue where multiple lights comes on and off so they don’t really know what’s causing the issue but will try to change the infotainment screen which they think is the issue might solve it so they kept my car for more than 90days and got my car back with scratches on dash and digital display bit shaky but according to milestones look like they tested if the issue been solved. ????

We had ~2100 miles on our vehicle. We had been driving on the highway for an hour when engine temperature warning light came on. We pulled over and turned off the car. We waited 30 minutes then opened the hood to inspect the coolant level. The coolant level was at "min." We looked under the car to see if any coolant was leaking and no coolant was visible under the car. We turned the car back on and sat in park for ~1 min. The engine temperature warning light came back on. We turned the car off and waited one hour. We turned the car back on, stayed in park, and the engine temperature warning light came back on. We called Kia and were towed to the nearest dealer. They inspected the car the next day and found no issues. Looking online, it appears that others have experienced similar issues with Kias and I am writing this in case it is a systemic issue that can help myself and others.

While driving my 2024 Kia Sportage PHEV X-Line AWD the instrument panel went black for 3-5 seconds and appeared to be "re-booting/resetting". The first time this occurred was approximately March 2025 (odometer reading approximately 6000 miles) and the issue has re-occurred numerous times (30+) since then (current odometer reading is 12,410). There was no warning prior to this happening and there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of any problems with the vehicle. I took the car into my local Kia dealer to have them check the instrument panel issue under warranty and to perform the recommended 8000 mile service. During the service visit they addressed the SC322 - Hybrid Control Unit Software upgrade recall. With regards to the instrument panel issue, the Service department told me that they could not fix the issue under warranty unless they could reproduce the issue. Therefore any work that they would perform to address the issue would have to be paid for by me. They suggested that I try to capture the issue on video as evidence of the issue. Given that the event only happens over a 3-5 second period, there is no way for me to safely videotape the issue while I am driving the vehicle and I have no idea when it will happen again. This issue has continued to occur randomly multiple times since that service visit with the last event happening three days ago. When the instrument panel goes black it is very distracting to the driver and draws your attention from the road to the instrument screen which puts the occupants of the vehicle at risk as well as others driving/walking around your vehicle. I have read online of others having this same issue with no clear consistent resolution from Kia. I strongly believe that this is a serious safety issue for many Kia drivers and needs to be addressed via a recall or voluntary dealer campaign to avoid unnecessary crashes/injuries.

The digital instrument cluster panel goes blank intermittently and without warning while I am driving.Within moments, the instrument panel reads: "System Reset". The information then reappears on the panel, displaying important information (speedometer, fuel gauge, etc.). My speed, however has been significantly reduced. I was driving on the highway at 70 mph when the instrument panel shut down (went blank). When it reappeared after "System Reset", I was going 48 mph.I believe this is a safety issue as it fails to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 101 "Controls and Displays and 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems". Also, the car is dangerous as I have no control over my speed. I could easily get rear ended by another vehicle which is another safety issue because the lithium batteries in this hybrid plug-in are in the back of the vehicle. This has occurred four times. The 2023 Kia Sportage Plug-In Vehicles were recalled due to this same problem. I am requesting the 2024 Kia Sportage Plug-In Vehicles are issued a recall also.
NHTSA #11626682
Infotainment panel on this vehicle flickered on and off. In certain occurrences the whole infotainment cluster would go out while driving and would not come back on. Kia dealer was told from their tech line which is through Kia corporate that it could be faulty electrical wiring or this coaxial cable. Kia dealer specifically stated that they had no idea that this coaxial line was there and had to fix the connection by welding it again. After this so far the infotainment system seems to be working properly. Now we are dealing with a battery discharge warning problem that Kia dealer can’t seem to figure out after they fixed the infotainment system. Before this the battery discharge warning never came up.
NHTSA #11585226
Cluster screen goes black The dealership has replaced the screen & completed a software update. I have several videos. The dealership states they can’t fix it because they can’t replicate it. So I send them a video when it occurs. I called Kia direct and was informed to get a new car. It’s been going on for a year. We purchased the car brand new.

While driving in cruise mode at 70mph in the [XXX] , the vehicle suddenly accelerated to 110mph. I detected the issue when I felt the car speeding up by itself, so I proceed to brake to avoid any accidents. As you might already have noticed, this is a major safety concern. I tried setting the car to cruise mode again, and it repeated the same action. The car was sent to the dealership, but they couldn't fix the issue. Reset the car and apparently was solved. Two months later, while driving my daily commute, the car repeated the same issue stated above. This time I had a car closer and could avoid to have a major issue by quickly braking the car, as the car quickly increased the power to reach the 110mph that for some unknow reason is doing by itself. I sent the car again to the dealership, they couldn't fix the issue and it's been in maintenance for over 55 days. In January 2026, my wife was driving our 2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid EX downhill in traffic when the hybrid system failed without warning. Cabin filled with smoke, lost steering control, and explosion shook the vehicle. She was surrounded by other vehicles and could have been killed or caused multi-car crash. COMPONENT FAILURE: Dealership diagnosed hybrid system failure after 2.5 weeks. Vehicle at dealership awaiting repair. Failed components available for inspection. SAFETY RISK: Zero steering control downhill surrounded by traffic. Smoke impaired visibility. Explosion posed fire risk. Life-threatening danger to occupants and other motorists. DEALER CONFIRMATION: Yes, confirmed by dealership. Repair pending. WARNING SYMPTOMS: None. Instantaneous catastrophic failure. CRITICAL ISSUE: I discovered Kia issued service campaigns for 2024 Sportage Hybrids directly related to this failure: Service Campaign SC322 (January 2025) - Hybrid Control Unit software failure affecting 2023-2025 Sportage Hybrids built Feb 2022-Jul 2024 12V Battery Overcharge Campaign - Battery Management System overcharging causing loss of motive power and "Check Hybrid System Stop Safely" warnings SC319 (NHTSA 24V-422) - Motor-Driven Power Steering contaminated circuit board causing loss of power steering Never notified of campaigns despite being owner since May 2024. NHTSA shows zero recalls, falsely indicating safety. By classifying defects as "voluntary service campaigns" instead of safety recalls, Kia avoided mandatory federal notifications. My wife drove with multiple known defects Kia failed to disclose. Vehicle under 2 years old, within warranty. This catastrophic failure and notification failure warrants NHTSA investigation. There was smoke and we called 911 and the fire department came out.

I am writing to report a serious and dangerous issue with my Kia vehicle that is putting my life and my family’s safety at risk. While driving, the engine shuts off completely whenever I come to a stop or press the brake pedal. I then have to manually restart the engine to continue driving. This happens frequently, including while I am in traffic or on the highway. I have come very close to being hit by other vehicles multiple times while my children were in the car. I already brought the vehicle to a Kia dealership, and they informed me that the issue was fixed. However, within one week, the same problem started again. This clearly indicates that the problem has not been resolved and may be due to a manufacturing or system defect. I cannot continue to drive this vehicle under these conditions. I am requesting immediate assistance to ensure my vehicle is either: Properly repaired and guaranteed safe to drive, or Replaced with another vehicle if the defect cannot be corrected. Please treat this as a high-priority safety matter. I am sending this email as official documentation that I have reported this issue to Kia Headquarters in case anything happens to me or my family while operating this vehicle. I expect a prompt response and resolution. Thank you for your urgent attention to this matter. A month after buying my vehicle in February of 2024, while driving my vehicle the screen behind my steering wheel will black out and come back on and do a system check as if I had just turned my car on. It happens at all times of day, at all speeds. I kept a log of some of the incidences and there are no two that are the same. I have even been in park with the car on and it will happen. When you are driving with cruise control on and it does it the cruise control shuts off then comes back on after it has done the system check again. This is extremely dangerous while driving on the interstate and a line of cars around you. I have taken it to the dealership and they have worked with Kia to try to figure it out and still have not been able to. I am now going on almost two years of this happening without any resolution. Below I put the last time it happened but this happens ALL the time and is not one isolated incident. I have attached a log I kept for two months of the incidences.

The dash on my sportage will go black while driving, and then the system reboots showing "system check" the cruise control also goes out when this happens. This happens about once a month. Dealer has checked it more than 3 times and has found no issues except the first time I brought it in.

Not safety but I couldn't locate the complaint section you supposably have. The front rotors had to be turned with less than 18K miles. They have since been completely replaced twice at my expense and the car is less than 2 years old. Now the rear rotors have issues and it's going to cost me $360 to turn them or $700 to replace them. The dealer says it's either my driving or the weather. I've have literally been driving for 40 years and have never had to replace rotors. As for weather, unless Columbia, MO has some special weather that eats rotors that is not the case either. A parts counter employee told us it was an issue with the axle and that until we find a service tech smart enough to fix it, we'll just keep replacing rotors. He said he worked for Toyota, and they had the same issue. The Kia tech said he had no idea what he was talking about so again, we're paying to replace parts on a less than 2-year-old car and they won't even warranty their repair work. There is obviously something very wrong with this car.

Front brake rotors are warped on new 2024 KIA Sportage with only 4000 miles on the vehicle. The vehicle is available for inspection anytime When braking the steering wheel will pulsate left to right The problem has been confirmed by the dealer as an ongoing problem with this vehicle brand and model. The vehicle is scheduled for repair on October 15, 2024 I have been advised that the front brake rotors will be re-surfaced and not replaced. I have also been advised that KIA will NOT perform a second repair

While driving, the vehicle engine shut off while making a turn. Before the engine stalled, the engine began to sputter as I made the turn. I was stranded on the roadway as I could not restart the vehicle. For my safety, I stayed in the vehicle as there was no shoulder and many vehicles including dump trucks. Several attempts to restart the engine were unsuccessful - the engine would try to turn over and then stop. I contacted roadside assistance and the car was towed to the dealership. Diagnosed as a Faulty Fuel Pump/Bad Connectors. Approximately 8950 miles. This is the second time the car stalled while driving.

Car brakes automatically applied, for no reason. I was driving in a city street, around 20 or 30 mph. The car randomly applied the brakes (hard) then released the brakes. I was able to continue driving after. But the braking made me jerk forward to the point that it locked my seatbelt. It was raining. But the road was completely open, no obstacle.

Since leasing this SUV and experiencing the safety features for the first time, the method this manufacturer used for zero crashes methodology seems thought out and looks refined in its final product; however, there is a strong safety issue at hand. That safety issue revolves around the driver not having full response and other drivers reacting to that. For example, when I back out of my own driveway or a parking spot, water on my rear camera will immediately jam on my brakes. Since I didn't do that as a driver and there isn't an apparent danger, it is not only a human performance issue for the driver but also for other drivers on the road. Next, when I install a bike rack on the rear of the SUV, I have to reverse while overriding the rear parking brake at the same time which is added complications. This also isn't perfected so often it also jams on the brakes. While all of this is happening, the safety sounds and camera views on my screen are changing automatically.

Tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is not working correctly. It is under reporting pressure by over 3-5 PSI on Cold and Hot Tire. My vehicle is available for inspection upon request. TPMS is flagging in the system and pushing to over fill tire with air over prescribed pressure by the manufacturer. It is safety risk. I got my vehicle air pressure checked twice in 2 weeks by a national tire chain shop. It didn't happen before. it is first time. Issue first appeared 4 weeks back.

I recently bought this vehicle and there was no spare tire. I was aware there was no spare, but I was not aware none were available for purchase! My problem is that Kia has not certified a compact spare tire for this vehicle and probably wont for two model years. I understand the manufacturers can sell vehicles without a spare tire, but consumers are UNABLE to purchase a spare on their own for two model years! I believe NHTSA should at least require them to have a certified spare available for consumers to purchase before they can sell the cars to the public. In my opinion, this is a safety issue that could leave motorists stranded on the side of a road somewhere.

24 hours after purchase, the steering wheel had high vibration and was worrisome to drive. Returned to dealer and was originally told I break too hard- before they kept the vehicle for 8 days. They claim the rotor was replaced. Everything I am experiencing for my first car is sounding unreasonable. Why would a new model off the dealer lot have a rotor issue and why can my dad replace his breaks in 3 hours but a dealer takes 8 days. I’m not sure what is wrong with my vehicle but wanted to report it in case something happens.

While driving the car on road, I suddenly started getting all types of warning regarding different safety system and power steering wheel. The steering wheel was stuck/frooze while I was at 40-50 mph and couldn't turn it at all. With lots of difficulty was able to pull the car and get it towed. This put us as serious risk of danger as if this was on freeway would have been dangerous to not have functioning steering wheel. Before this similar issue had occurred but while in a parking lot so was not serious but happening while on road is extremely dangerous. After the repair said it was fixed, the problem was experienced a 3rd time while driving again but since car was slow was able to pull it on side. There seems to be a serious defect in car but car manufacturer is not able to repair it and putting lives in danger

Sudden Unintended Acceleration – 2024 Kia Sportage – Safety Hazard. Incident Date: April 18, 2026. Location: Parking lot. While pulling into a parking space at low speed, I brought the vehicle to a complete stop with my foot on the brake. Immediately after stopping, the vehicle suddenly and forcefully accelerated forward on its own without my foot on the accelerator. I was actively pressing the brake pedal, but the vehicle did not respond as expected and continued to accelerate. The acceleration was strong enough that the vehicle jumped over the parking bumper with both front tires and struck a fixed post. Even after impact with the post, the vehicle continued to push forward as if still accelerating, until it hit another barrier and finally came to a stop. At no time did I press the accelerator pedal. The vehicle’s behavior felt completely uncontrolled and unsafe. This incident could have resulted in serious injury or death if it had occurred in traffic or with pedestrians in front of the vehicle. The vehicle has been towed to KIA dealership and is pending inspection. I am reporting this as a serious safety defect. No injuries. Front-end damage after collision with post. This event was sudden, unexpected, and not driver-induced.

While driving, the vehicle experienced a sudden loss of propulsion and significantly reduced acceleration. At the same time, the climate control system stopped producing heat. A red warning message appeared instructing me to stop safely. The vehicle would barely accelerate, creating a dangerous situation while driving. This issue has occurred three separate times, including twice in the same day. Each occurrence happened while the vehicle was in motion. The condition resolved only after turning the vehicle off and restarting it. The issue is intermittent and cannot be predicted. The reduced acceleration and loss of propulsion placed my safety at risk, especially at highway speeds, as the vehicle could not respond normally to traffic conditions. The vehicle was taken to a Kia dealership and inspected. A manufacturer tech line case was opened, and testing was performed, including a smoke test. The dealership stated they were unable to duplicate the issue. No repair was made, and the manufacturer closed the tech line case despite the reported loss of propulsion events. The vehicle is currently being retained at the dealership because I do not feel it is safe to operate. The problem was not resolved.

While driving my 2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid, the vehicle displayed the warning message “Check Hybrid System – Stop Safely.” Immediately after this message appeared, the vehicle lost propulsion and entered a reduced power/limp condition. This creates a dangerous situation because the vehicle can suddenly lose power while driving in traffic. The dealership informed me that this condition is related to a known hybrid system defect but refused to repair it, stating it was “not under warranty.” This is a safety-related high-voltage hybrid failure involving the propulsion system and can result in unexpected loss of power while driving, increasing the risk of a crash. This defect makes the vehicle unsafe to operate.

On December 24, 2025, while driving in traffic, my Kia Sportage experienced severe lurching, bucking, and jerking, causing the engine to shut down. All dashboard warning lights illuminated, including a message prompting me to "turn engine back on." The vehicle would not restart, necessitating a tow to Horne Kia. After several days of diagnostics, it was determined that a blown ignition fuse and a bad fuel pump relay were the issues, along with a battery replacement. However, just 19 days later, while attempting to merge onto the freeway, the vehicle again bucked violently, and the engine shut down with all warning lights flashing. The police had to assist in moving my vehicle out of traffic, and it was towed to Courtesy Kia in Mesa, AZ. Once again, no error codes were found. After further diagnostics, it was discovered that the same ignition fuse had blown and that the catalytic converter had "shattered." The catalytic converter was replaced. Upon picking up the vehicle from the dealership, and driving less then 5 miles on freeway, the vehicle was bucking and hard shifting once again resulting in a third tow to dealership just 48 hours later after the previous service. The dealership ran several diagnostics under Kia's tech line, which revealed that the engine pistons are slipping and not functioning properly, resulting in loss of compression. Per Kia's tech line, a new engine long block was ordered and replaced.

While traveling at approx 65 mph on a clear, debris-free Alaska highway in -5°F temperatures, the panoramic sunroof of my 2024 Kia Sportage spontaneously shattered with an explosive sound. There were no vehicles in the immediate vicinity (nearest car was maybe 50 to 75 ft away) and no observation of flying debris or falling objects from overpasses. The failure appears to be a spontaneous glass breakage (SGB) incident potentially caused by thermal stress or manufacturing defect rather than external impact. Crucially, some of the remaining glass fragments and one large attached piece are displaced and flexed OUTWARD (upward toward the sky). There are also fracture lines in the remaining glass along and parallel to the sides of the vehicle as well as parallel to the front frame of the glass. They do not radiate out from a central point as one would expect from an object strike. This geometry to me indicates internal tension or cabin pressure release, as an external impact from a projectile would have forced the glass inward into the cabin. Additionally, there was very little glass in the vehicle cabin, certainly far less than one would expect given the size of the opening in the sunroof and the amount of glass missing. I have personally previously been in a vehicle whose side window was blown out from a vehicle kicked rock strike and in that case was showered with a lot of glass. Yesterdays catastrophic failure resulted in some glass intrusion into the passenger cabin at highway speeds, creating a severe distraction with sound was loud & sudden enough to potentially cause a loss of vehicle control. I am aware of similar reports regarding the 2023-2024 Sportage (and previous Kia panoramic sunroof class actions) regarding the use of ceramic glazing or assembly stresses that contribute to such failures. I request an investigation into whether the current model's panoramic roof assembly is capable of withstanding extreme thermal differentials and body flex.

While driving the vehicle and selecting EV only mode the engine RPMs surge to about 3000. This happens frequently and I have it on Video. Kia has had the car multiple times for electrical may electrical related repairs but say the vehicle is normal. The tech line person even had the dealer drive a similar car for a baseline. I would expect they had a baseline prior to manufacturing the car. This is an ongoing unrepaired issue. Date below is first reported date of electrical concerns.

I am writing to formally raise a safety concern regarding my vehicle’s brake and rotor system, which has experienced premature failure on two separate occasions. First Occurrence: The issue was first identified prior to reaching 11,000 miles and was addressed by the dealership after surpassing 11,000 miles. The repair involved replacement of the rotors and bolts, but notably, the brake components themselves were not replaced. Second Occurrence: Around 23,000 miles, I began to notice progressively worsening shaking and a disturbing sensation of the brakes skipping or slipping—particularly during highway downgrades. By 24,500 miles, the issue had become significantly more pronounced. I returned the vehicle to Kia of Stockton at 25,248 miles. During my visit, Ricardo from the Kia of Stockton Service Department attributed the issue to “driver error,” citing hot spots on the rotors. However, he also acknowledged that during the initial repair, only the rotors and bolts were replaced—not the brakes. Ricardo further stated that Kia could not offer any additional support beyond a 10% discount on repairs, per his manager’s directive. I explained that I live and work locally, and my driving habits do not involve long commutes or frequent stop-and-go traffic. Given this, I strongly believe the repeated brake system failure points to a potential manufacturing defect rather than user error. Ricardo agreed that if this were his own vehicle, he would be concerned as well. This issue poses a serious safety risk—not only to myself and my family, but to other drivers on the road. In addition my vehicle has also experienced powertrain issues, where it feels as if the vehicle is stuck in 1st gear. I am therefore requesting a full investigation into this matter. If necessary, I would like to initiate the process of reporting this vehicle as a potential lemon under applicable consumer protection laws. Thank you for your attention to this urgent safety concern.

The Dashboard with all the instrumentation goes blank while driving causing loss of all instrumentation gauges and headlights shut off. This has happened repeated times since the car was purchased new in June 2024 and has been in the service department since October a total of six times. They have replaced fitments, the dashboard cluster, the phone charging pad and have done multiple software updates and it continues to go blank while operating. The dash then lights back up with System Check and all the instruments lights in dash glow and it stays like that for several seconds. I am repeatedly told they cannot recreate the problem to properly diagnose so they have been cherry picking solutions to fix and it’s dangerous to drive. I have filed a complaint with the NC Attorney General, a BBB Auto Complaint, a Complaint with the Manufacturer directly and they are telling the dealer to return car to me because they can’t recreate the problem and so in their opinion nothing is wrong when I have video of this happening while driving. When I was driving the vehicle using cruise control, the vehicle suddenly reset the cruise to 110 mph and the vehicle surged forward. The brake disengaged the acceleration but when I reengaged the cruise control it surged toward 110 miles an hours again. The only fix for this was to turn the car off completely and then the cruise control acted normally once again. Then it happened a second time. After that I quit using cruise control. I brought the vehicle in to Luther Kia of Bloomington and they did not know how to fix it. They contacted Kia who said their engineers were working on a fix and they were aware of the problem but at this point they did not have one. I have engaged a buyback Request from Kia because this vehicle is unsafe and potentially fatal to drive. They have denied my buyback request. I am reporting this because I think it is a danger to not only myself but other vehicles on the road.

While traveling on a 4-lane highway and using cruise control, a car in the left-hand lane was making a left turn across a median cut through, and my car's sensors detected a collision and took me from 60 mph down to 35 mph in about five seconds. If a car had been behind me, it would have rear ended me. I no longer use the cruise control for this reason. And yes, my sensors were clean. I had just gotten the car cleaned within a day or two prior. I have an appointment this coming Monday to take it to the dealership, to have them look at it. Separate incident. While parked in a parking lot, came out of restaurant and cars were parked very close on either side of my car. My car's sensors detected collision and would not let me back out. I had to pull forward and try to go back numerous times before it finally released the collision warning and allowed me to back out. This happened many months ago, but I am just now having the time to take it and drop it to the dealership because they want to keep it all day.

Two issues that I've taken to dealership 3 times since purchasing vehicle January 2024. 1. Adaptive cruise control -- I was in right lane of 4 lane highway with cruise control on. A car in left lane took a turn to cut through median and my car thought it was a collision and hard braked and took my vehicle from 60mph to 35mph in a few seconds. If a car had been behind me, I would have been rear ended. They cannot "replicate" so I no longer use cruise control unless there are no cars around. 2. Timing has been off (loud clicking every time I crank) since a few months after I bought the car. I sent approximately 9 videos to the service advisor. Took it in 2 times "cannot replicate." Left it overnight at dealership "cannot replicate." It's every time I first crank for the day. It's now louder and gotten worse. I have videos and can take more. I just want this fixed. Afraid I'll be stranded and it feels like they are pushing it farther and farther out so it will exceed warranty and they won't have to eat the cost to repair. It's been 1.5 years I've been dealing with this. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated!!

The sunroof exploded all of the sudden. I was driving on the I-675 highway toward Wright-Patt Air Force Base and the sunroof exploded, barely maintained vehicle control. The shattered glass hit my head and my child legs. Some glass sand enter my eye. I manage to pulled over and check my car interior for any strange/outside object but there was no external object, nothing. Called the police, they also inspect the vehicle and found nothing. I’m very concerned about this, could cost our lives. Drop the car at the dealership and they said that definitively was a manufacturing defect.

On October 22, 2023, we made a restroom stop at an ARCO in Moapa, NV. I was in the car while my wife used the facilities. It was a clear day with the temperature in the mid 70s. As I backed out of our parking space I heard a loud pop. I checked to see if I had run over something or had a flat. I saw nothing. I got back onto the interstate and about 2 miles later I heard a loud pop and in my rear view mirror saw debris flying from our car. I pulled off the road and again checked my tires. I then checked the roof and saw that part of the sunroof glass was gone. This was a new car only 23 days old, with only about 550 miles on it. It had never been on rough roads. We had never opened the sunroof. We understand that this is an ongoing problem with sunroofs that use tempered glass. Please add ours to your investigation and fix the problem. It is at the Kia dealer now. They said they would check with KIA.
