As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant crash protection."

During the last service at the dealership. While they are replacing the battery, they found a melted bolt on the auxiliary battery that causes a loose cable connection and informed me that its a fire hazard. The car has 85k at the moment and all services were done at the dealership. No incident or any repairs. This is not a wear and tear. How can a bolt just melt. It might even melted a while ago and putting drivers in hazard without know because they would not noticed this unless a battery is getting replaced.

The evaporator was diagnosed by two (2) independent mechanics as the failure point of the AC system. The Air conditioner is currently inoperable and I reside in Las Vegas - Temperatures average well over 100 degrees and we are approaching summer. Common knowledge failure point: A/C Evaporator - Located deep within the dashboard at the firewall, requiring an interior disassembly - Skilled labor and time Manufacturer's defect: Upon research, these are very common failure point as a result of the improper engineering of the AC system on this particular vehicle.

The contact stated that several times, the contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that while making several attempts to start the vehicle, the message "System Overheated - Restarting Engine Possible After Cooling" was displayed on the instrument cluster, and the contact had to wait 120 seconds before further attempts to restart the vehicle were possible. Recently purchased a 2019 BMW X5 xdrive40i with 77k miles, after only owning for 3 weeks after a heavy rain storm. My dash lit up with “Emergency call system malfunction”, upon review online it seems to be a common issue with these BMW models and no recall has been issued. The sos malfunction causes the vehicle not to function properly and unable to use the integrated idrive head unit system. It also dials emergency services on its own and won’t let me end call. After taking it to bmw dealership they found the telematics module battery to be low and suggested replacing. Previous owner had similar issue back in January of 2023 and the shark fin antenna by the roof was replaced , resealed and TCB telematics unit replaced. So only after 2 weeks of replacing the TCB battery, same issue appeared again after a heavy rain storm. I took it back to bmw for diagnose and they had to have one of there engineers test it and found out the actual sos button ecu system unit to have a short causing the sos malfunction and it dialing emergency services on its own. Vehicle is not driveable and has been at bmw they are trying to charge me additional $1,547.58 plus taxes and fees for the repair. I feel as if this is a defect on bmw and should be addressed and issued as an recall for there customers.

The vehicle's electrical system experienced a starter malfunction, which led to a complete failure of the starter. As a result, the car would not start, ultimately causing the battery to fail as well. This failure posed a serious safety risk. I could have been left stranded in the middle of traffic, increasing the risk of a collision that could have caused injury to myself and others. If the malfunction had occurred in a remote location, I could have been left stranded, placing me in a potentially dangerous situation. The issue was confirmed by the dealership. Although there is an active NHTSA recall related to this exact problem, my vehicle’s VIN was not included. However, it should have been—my vehicle was manufactured during the affected production period and experienced the same failure described in the recall. As a result, I had to pay out of pocket for these substantial repairs. The manufacturer failed to include my VIN in the recall, despite clear evidence that my vehicle was subject to the same defect. The manufacturer inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the failure involved both the starter and the battery; however, I was required to pay out of pocket for the replacement of both components. There were no warning lights, error messages, or other symptoms prior to the failure—the vehicle simply stopped functioning without notice. Further research revealed that many other owners have reported the same starter malfunction, frequently resulting in battery failure and the need to replace both components. Although the manufacturer is aware of this widespread issue, they have not issued a comprehensive recall for all affected vehicles. Had they done so, this failure—and the associated safety risks, inconvenience, and significant repair costs—could have been avoided.

I did research and found that other owners of the same make and model as well as prior and later models have had the same issue. The shark fin antenna allows water ingress into the components which causes internal damage, this could possibly lead to other electrical problems that could present while the vehicle is in motion. What if an owner gets into an accident and the SOS/emergency call is unable to deploy due to this faulty antenna leakage.

I am writing to file a complaint against BMW for the replacement of the starter in my 2019 BMW X5 (VIN # [XXX] ) which I had to pay for out of pocket in March 2024. My vehicle failed to start after repeated attempts. After a call to the dealership they told me I would have to have it towed to the dealership at my own expense at a total of $266 for them to assess. The dealership confirmed that the starter needed replacement which cost me an additional $1736.78 out of pocket. After receiving a recall notice from BMW, I learned that this issue is related to a known safety defect with the starter which can lead to electrical overload, overheating, and in rare cases a fire risk. Given that I had to replace the faulty starter before the recall was issued, I am requesting reimbursement for the costs I incurred -$2002.78 which includes the towing charges and starter replacement. I reached out to Joseph Battle (Service Advisor) at BMW of Nashville, and he informed me that reimbursement is not possible only a software upgrade. This response is unacceptable, as I should not have to bear the cost for a safety issue BMW has since acknowledged. I kindly request reimbursement for the full amount of $2002.78. BMW "did not" issue a recall notice for this known issue for my VIN. They were aware of this issue and corrected it based on the latest software update 11/2022.56. The problem is older software versions can cause the battery to completely drain even when the engine is not running and make you deserted anywhere, which is a safety issue. Also, since the battery can be fully drained, your booster brakes also will not work during the start of the engine, which can again cause risk when starting. BMW did not advise customers regarding this safety issue. In my case, My battery was completely drained, and I had to replace my battery. Details of the defect from the latest software update release notes are mentioned below. The concern is why BMW did not issue a recall notice to customers like me. I hope NHTSA can take the necessary action on this and issue a proper recall notice. I am writing regarding my BMW X5 xDrive40i, model year 2019, engine code B58TU. The vehicle has been serviced at authorized BMW dealerships. For this engine type B58TU especially years 2018-2021, repeated oil pump failures have been reported due to a known design issue: an internal plastic component can develop cracks, potentially leading to a complete oil pump failure. BMW silently replaced the oil pump with the updated version by keeping the same part number but featuring metal internals. Once there is a fail on the oil pumps with plastic components, engine loses access to get the oil an immediate stop is needed. This creates a huge safety concern cause: 1) If you are on a highway at highway speeds it might not be possible to move to the shoulder safely with no engine power or even worse: with a locked engine. 2) If there is a maintenance on the road with no shoulder access or if this is a bridge where there is no shoulder, it creates a huge risk to safely move the vehicle. An unavoidable sudden stop can create a huge accident risk for everybody. Of course any car can get a engine problem on those occasions but this is a very known and very common problem for BMW cars equipped with B58TU engine especially years 2018-2021. BMW is also definitely aware of that and this safety concern cause they updated the design silently. But, when contacted with BMW NA, they refused to help, refused to admit there is a design problem. They also refused to change the oil pump with the updated oil pump even with my proposal of goodwill pricing.

I recently took my 2019 X5 to the BMW dealership because of the recall (Engine starter) and the code P0456 (NVLD Minor Leak Fault). At the same time, there's a warning that says, "Oil at a minimum level. Add 1 liter immediately". I have the 3 Year Oil Plan and asked them to put some oil, but the dealership said that they can't add oil because the oil level wouldn’t read properly. They told me they couldn’t diagnose it without charging me an extra 300 for further testing. Then, I read a lot of threads online and it seems that BMW quietly changed the pump to an all-metal design around 2020 but never issued a recall or extended warranty for the earlier cars. There's a lot of customers complaining with the B58TU engine found in many 2019–2021 BMWs (X5 xDrive40i, 540i, 340i, etc.). The variable oil pump uses a plastic internal adjusting ring that cracks over time. When it fails, oil pressure becomes unstable or is lost, often with little warning. A common early symptom is the oil level sensor test failing and stopping around 12-20%. In the worst cases, it can lead to sudden engine damage or the car shutting down while driving. I called up my mechanic, and he said that this is a common problem and it could be an oil pump issue that needs to be replaced. I asked him for a quote and he said approximately 5k or more. Premature oil pump failure. 2019 BMW x5 with only 46k miles has been diagnosed with an oil pump failure. Vehicle needed to be quickly pulled over and shut off to avoid catastrophic engine failure or engine seize. If this happens on the highway or at any speed the vehicle will lose power and be unsafe to control likely ending in an accident. This is a known Issue. BMW produced the vehicle with a flawed oil pump design that has a plastic ring around the impeller. The ring deteriorates and cracks leading to pump failure and loss of oil pressure It is only on limited models early 2019 X5. BMW redesigned with an all metal pump quietly. This issue needs to be addressed with BMW as it is unsafe for these family vehicles to be on the road with such a significant risk to its passengers and others. The failure happens with little to no warning. When contacting BMW they told me they would not consider helping with repairs. The repair for this part is upward of $8k which in turn will likely limit consumers ability to fix proactively. This is totally unacceptable and needs to be addressed by the NHTSA directly with BMW. BMW knowingly did NOT NOTIFY it's 2019 BMW X5 M40i (engine B58) vehicle owners. This is in reference to the faulty design and made plastic engine oil pump. It has been known to fail prematurely due to weaken parts. Some analysis done was from certain oil viscosity's applying additional unneeded stressful pressures. This later was recognized by BMW and a newer design and/or metal sturdier one had taken it's place in subsequent model years starting in 2020. Some owners were able to remediate the oil pump failure and new replacement either covered under intact warranties, and some were covered through quieter negotiations with BMW Customer Care's authorizations. To my understanding, no recalls were made nor were any techical service bulletins (TSB) made to it's owners. I don't see how BMW can be allowed to get away with an issue of safety which could cause a catastrophic failure of the affected engine? Under the circumstances, BMW should be fully reimbursing me for the repairs here, and be glad there were NO serious injuries OR worse, DEATHS! I have been in contact with their Customer Care and nothing has been done to date.

The oil pump contains a plastic housing that fractured during regular use. (Yes, I did retain the part for inspection and can include photos of the defect here). Yes, the problem has been confirmed by my mechanic and the general public with multiple posts and videos shared widely across the internet and in vehicle forums. This failure caused the engine to lose oil pressure abruptly. Had this occurred at highway speeds or in heavy traffic, it could have resulted in a serious accident. BMW is aware of the problem and has redesigned the oil pumps for all X5s starting in 2020. There is no real warning for this potential failure which would cause the engine to cease. The problem is most commonly diagnosed by checking the oil level via the I-Drive System electronically, (there is no dipstick for these cars). The oil level cannot be provided on the screen due to significant pressure fluctuations caused by the damaged oil pump- and that's how you know you're at risk of engine failure. There has been no recall for the 2019 vehicles. All 2019 BMWs with the B58 engine, (and the Toyota Supra), include this dangerous and expensive design flaw and I believe a recall should be issued; the majority of these cars are still on the road. I estimate the total number of cars to be 250,000 cars. My oil pump had to be replaced or the car would be rendered undriveable. The estimate from BMW dealership #1 exceeded 11,000; the estimate from BMW dealership #2 exceeded 8,000. The car has less than 70,000 miles on it and this is a known issue for this model year.

Due to heat cycles and mechanical stress, this plastic component degrades, becomes brittle, and catastrophically shatters or cracks.The first symptom appeared when the vehicle became entirely unable to complete an electronic engine oil level measurement via the iDrive system, consistently freezing and aborting the test at approximately 15% to 20%. This defect directly compromises road safety. A sudden drop in oil pressure causes severe internal engine friction, leading to immediate engine seizure or a total loss of motive power without adequate warning. Experiencing a sudden engine stall while driving at highway speeds places the driver, passengers, and surrounding motorists at extreme risk of a high-speed rear-end collision. Furthermore, a total engine shutdown disables power-assist steering and braking, making the vehicle incredibly difficult to control and maneuver to safety. Catastrophic mechanical failure from oil starvation also presents a severe under-hood fire hazard if oil leaks onto hot exhaust components.The problem has been officially reproduced and confirmed. The vehicle was brought to Bavarian Werkstatte, where certified technicians diagnosed the issue as an internal structural failure of the variable-displacement oil pump's plastic adjusting ring. The component is currently available for inspection upon request. BMW is fully aware of this defective design. They updated this exact component in mid-2020 to an all-metal oil pump to prevent plastic fragmentation. Despite knowing that the 2019 thermoplastic rings degrade, become brittle, and shatter under normal operating heat cycles, the manufacturer has failed to issue a safety recall in the United States, leaving drivers exposed to dangerous sudden engine failure.

This vehicle was driven about 40000 miles at that time. BMW Orland park diagnosed the root cause and fixed it on 5/10/2023. They replaced faulty lower radiator blind. The emergency call warning on the dash was activated. GPS and Heads-up display no longer functioned correctly. BMW Dealership replaced TCB2 Box and battery at a cost of $2956.63. In researching this issue found numerous complaints from other owners. Contacted BMW and was told they were not responsible, car was out of warranty (4yr / 50,000 mi). This is an electronic component that is positioned in the least hostile environment of the vehicle. It has NO moving parts, is located in a dry / protected area (above the headliner), has NO knobs to turn / buttons to push / or screens to touch and is not subject to normal wear and tear. One of 2 things seem to be the case: This is a rare failure of this component - in which case I would think BMW and the manufacturer would be not only interested to investigate but also responsible. This is a regular failure of this component and since it is an integral part of the car's safety system BMW does not want to acknowledge a known defect.

We recently learned of NHTSA Recall 24V-576, issued on August 1, 2024, by BMW of North America. The recall involves the engine starter in 2019–2020 BMW X5 models, due to engine no-start issues and potential electrical overloads that can result in a thermal event. While our vehicle matches the make, model, and year, we were informed by BMW that our specific VIN is not currently listed under the recall. However, we are experiencing exactly the same problem described in the recall notice—an engine that suddenly fails to start, with no warning, and with the potential for unsafe repeated ignition attempts. This issue appears to be a known defect, as numerous reports suggest that water intrusion through the exposed area can cause damage to the emergency communication system and GPS functionality. This is a major safety concern, as it compromises critical emergency features and wireless connectivity, impacting the vehicle’s overall functionality. Despite this being a design flaw, the dealership is charging us over $5,000 for repairs, which is an unreasonable burden for a defect that should have been properly sealed and protected during manufacturing. For the safety of all drivers, this defective shark fin assembly must be recalled, redesigned, and properly sealed to prevent further failures. We urge the manufacturer to take immediate action to address this safety hazard.

On November 9, 2023, I was driving out of town to visit a friend. I had been on the road for 1.5 hours and driven approximately 100 miles. When the vehicle approached a stop sign and came to a stop, the auto stop function turned the engine off. When it was my turn to proceed, I disengaged the brake, but the vehicle's auto start function failed to turn on the engine. I put the car in park and pushed the start button once. In doing so, the car attempted to restart itself multiple times, without success. I could hear the vehicle "cranking", but the car never started. Shortly thereafter, the cranking sound stopped, and white smoke filled the cabin through the air vents. It smelled like burning plastic. I grabbed my belongings and evacuated the area. Once outside of the vehicle, I could see white smoke bellowing out from underneath the vehicle. There were no warning messages or any other issues prior to the failure. The car was towed over 100 miles to the dealership where they confirmed an internal short circuit caused the starter to fail. The dealership replaced the starter. I do see there is a recall for the starter. However, I believe my issue is different. The vehicle failed to restart due to the recently identified programming issue, causing the starter to malfunction. The starter failure was not due to excessive attempts to start the vehicle, as I only pushed the start button one time.

The car has a faulty cup holder that allows fluid to leak. Below the cup holder is Crash Module, which controls the airbags and all the safety restraint system. I had a minor amount of fluid leak. This caused corrosion on the ASCM module. BMW is fighting me in paying for this. Based on my research there have been hundreds of incidents and a class action lawsuit. Since February of this year, my X5 has suddenly gone into neutral gear while driving in stop and go traffic on multiple occasions over the past 3 months. This incident first started on 2/26/2022, wherein my car abruptly went into neutral, coming to a complete stop in the midst of heavy stop and go traffic, while approaching George Washington Bridge. This happened twice within a 20 minute interval during that same trip. The car wouldn’t start back again for several minutes each time. Following this, I took my X5 to my local dealership to get it checked out. The dealership kept the car for a few days, ran some tests, but were unable to replicate the issue. The car was subsequently released to me. (Ref: dealership service invoice dated 3/8/2022) The exact issue recurred on 5/22/2022, again in heavy stop and go traffic, approaching George Washington Bridge. This time the car wouldn’t start for more than 10-15 minutes. Following this, I had to call 911 to help me out. The car eventually started after 20 minutes. I took it back to the same dealership. Once again, the issue couldn’t be replicated. However, after consulting with the factory technicians, the dealership replaced the gear shifter. (Ref: dealership service invoice dated 6/8/2022) Unfortunately, this exact issue recurred on 6/24/2022 – heavy stop and go traffic, on the approach to Whitestone Bridge. The car abruptly went into neutral from drive mode, stopped completely and wouldn’t start back again for a few minutes. Please note that the Automatic Start/Stop (MSA) system on the vehicle was always set to OFF. It is a miracle I did not get into an accident when this issue manifested each time. I have made yet another appointment with my local dealer for 7/11/2022 to re-evaluate the issue. In the meanwhile, I called the main office at BMW USA and got a case started as well.

I have a 2019 BMW X5 that experienced engine failure and required a new battery and starter to be installed. I feel certain that it is related to a recall on some 2019/2020 models but my vin is not included. [XXX] I received a fault warning for drivetrain malfunction. I took the car to the bmw dealership and was told it was an upper radiator blind failure and had it replaced. The dealership performed a software update per recall SIB 120524. The mileage was 36,981. While visiting family in New Orleans[XXX] @ [XXX] in the afternoon, on Decatur (heart of French Quarter) the car died in the middle of rush hour traffic. Fault came up that said ”engine overheat will attempt restart in 180 sec.” Car would not start and had to be towed to local BMW. Highly stressful as I was with my daughter. We had people honking horns, screaming at us, police threatening to ticket us, etc. ordeal lasted 2 hrs until tow arrived. After 4 days in the BMW shop I was advised a new battery was needed. No indication the starter was checked at this time. Mileage was 40,168. The next day [XXX] when driving home to Dallas I pull over to get gas in Natchitoches, La. I fill up and try to start car and failure notice shows up ”engine overheat will attempt restart in 180 sec”. Same thing as before new battery installed. The car did not restart even after an hr of waiting. Would not take a jump so we had to be towed to Shreveport(1 1/2 hrs away) to closest BMW dealership. I was traveling with My son and was beyond grateful at the kindness of the tow driver as he took us to get food and a hotel that was safe after delivering the car to the dealership. The next afternoon the Shreveport dealership determined that the starter failed and it had to be replaced. Mileage was 40,423. I feel I am due repayment for the tows and repairs on what I feel are recall related. I have contacted all 3 dealerships and North America BMW to get the run around. About a year ago, coffee began leaking from below from a paper cup in the plastic cupholder of my x5. I immediately noticed it and cleaned it up. Approximately 1-2 ounces of liquid leaked into the plastic cupholder. On May 11, 2022, the Passenger Restraint System faulted and the light came on. The vehicle was inspected by BMW of Austin and stated that liquid seeped onto the Airbag Control Module and some of the pins were corroded. This would not be covered by the Warranty as it was deemed an "external" factor that caused the failure. The estimate to fix this issue and get the airbag functioning again is $2,005.00. BMW placed the Airbag Control Module right under the plastic cupholder, and does not seal the plastic cupholder or the important Airbag Control Module right under the plastic cupholder. Luckily, the airbag system did not automatically stop the vehicle as has been the case with other vehicles- X7 and X5. This is a design failure that BMW is aware of that leaves its customers at risk of injury due to the airbag system faulting. This issue is ongoing and affects all X5 and X7 models. BMW needs to provide a remedy to this design and safety flaw. Owners should not have to pay $2,000 to remedy. There is a class action lawsuit filed in December 2021 for this exact issue.

Driving my vehicle and on my screen popped up driver seat restraint malfunction, also rear seat restraint malfunction please go to closest dealership. I bring my vehicle to BMW dealership in my town and rep calls me and advise that the cup holders sit above the srs wiring and that liquid gets thru the cup holders and dripped on to the wires causing them to no longer work. This is a design flaw i have never spilled a drink in my cup holder and even if someone did on accident why is the AIRBAG wires not covered in plastic if going below cup holders that leak any type of liquid. I am unable to afford, I do have warranty however BMW stating that this is an outside interferance and will not be covered under warranty, so I am having to drive with no airbags. I researched and many others are having same issue with this same year and make different models. This is something that definatly needs to be recalled as it is a design flaw and a safety hazard.

vehicle has been vibrating at low speeds when turning or when backing up. Took vehicle to BMW dealership (BMW of Nashville in Franklin, TN) multiple times during the past 18 months without resolution. On my visit for the same issue this month, dealership finally recognized the issue and said there was a BMW bulletin out about the issue SIB 27 02 20. It is very frustrating that 1. The dealership kept stalling and despite test driving the car with me and feeling the vibration, they kept blaming tires or saying it was normal while the bulletin about the issues was generated in 05.20.2020 2. It cost me over $627 for them to change the transfer case oil to diagnose and repair the issue. I am still in the testing phase after the transfer case oil change as the vehicle needs to be driven 300+ miles. The dealership and BMW should issue a recall since it is a know issue that the wrong oil was used in the manufacturing process and reimburse the cost charged for diagnostic and transfer case oil replacement. The vehicle is furthermore still under warranty so I should not be paying anything for diagnostics or repairs.

I am writing regarding my BMW X5 xDrive40i, model year 2019. For this G05 model coded cars, repeated transfer case failures have been reported due to a known issue: on the factory they put a wrong oil in it and then published a Technical Bulletin about it as if they are not the ones responsible for that. The problem is, due to that mistake, transfer cases of cars manufactured between 2018-2020 becomes dead in time. Cars shudders, jerking at low speeds, cannot deliver the power to the ground effectively due to intermittent and very disturbing, powerful shudders. This creates a huge safety concern cause: 1) if you are on an intersection the car might not join safely to the traffic in a perceived timing due to the shudders, intermittent power delivery. 2) If you are on a driveway and moving to the street the car might not move to the street for the perceived timing or once moved cannot move safely to join the traffic. 3) If there is a failure on the transfer case and if there is a sudden stop is needed. On the road with no shoulder access or if this is a bridge where there is no shoulder, it creates a huge risk to safely move the vehicle. An unavoidable sudden stop can create a huge accident risk for everybody. This is a very known and very common problem for BMW cars equipped with B58TU engine especially years 2018-2020. BMW is also definitely aware of that and this safety concern but instead of fixing it they moved away their responsibility as if they are not the ones made the mistake. But, when contacted with BMW NA, they refused to help.

BMW jerking and shuttering sensation and rough grinding noise when driving at low speed 2-5 mph and while turning at 2-5 mph. Safety was put at risk with while turning with oncoming traffic and when vehicles directly behind me. The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by the BMW dealership service department. The service department change the left tire and replaced the transfer oil on 5/10/23. This did not solve the problem. The vehicle was returned to dealership for same reason on 7/19/24 and the dealership replaced the right tire. The problem still exists. Over the 2 years of ownership I had about 5 incident where I lost control of my 2019 BMW X5 40i. The specific trim was XLine with standard brake option. It occurred rather randomly so I was not able to identify the pattern to reproduce. Right after the ignition to leave a parking space (and while still holding the brake since starting the car) the car would push my foot up and I would lose control of the brake. After a few seconds of desperate tries to press the brake, I was able to stop the car from drifting backwards as I engaged "Park" gear. Similar situation occurred and each time I was fortunate that there wasn't a car directly heading towards me. However I experienced this life threatening experience and BMW seems to acknowledge with their service bulletin of "SIB 34 04 19" but no fix was given to me.

The engine warning system came on and warned of low oil pressure. Knowing the oil level was good I stopped the vehicle to check oil leaks. Found none. Knowing engine mechanics I assumed it was a faulty oil pump. had it towed to BMW and told it was so. The replacement would be $8,000. Found out after lengthy research that the oil pump of the 2019 X5 (which I have) was made with plastic internal parts that would be a matter of when not if, the plastic parts would fail because the acidic nature of used oil. Presented this info to BMW and they lowered the price to $3986.16. Then I discovered BMW knew about the problem and changed the oil pump design from 2020 on.

Kiso) and EuroTech Auto Repair (Larchmont, NY) revealed that the oil pump had degraded internally, specifically due to failure of plastic components. All Sensors were working fine and showed no faults. This failure could not be detected by regular maintenance and posed a risk to engine reliability and potential sudden loss of lubrication. All have been diagnosed by BMW of North Haven, CT. The oil pump and transfer case failures have created potential loss of engine lubrication and vehicle control putting my safety at risk. The oil-level test aborts at 16% making it impossible to verify oil quantity or pressure while driving. The shuddering occurs during low-speed turns and acceleration. BMW North America reviewed my case and approved goodwill coverage for transfer-case fluid change ALL other safety-related repairs have been denied. We tried to put the vehicle in Neutral so it can be pushed out to the side and not block traffic. I called the East Bay BMW and the Road Assistance for help with putting the vehicle in Neutral but I was told it can’t be done. The CHP (2 officers) and I tried to put the car in neutral but without any success. I with EastBay BMW and was told that noting can be done to put the vehicle in Neutral. The only way to shift the car in Neutral is from under the car and requires a mechanic . There was electrical burning smell coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to the EastBay Dealership in Pleasanton, CA. Upon inspection, the Dealer stated the issue is due to bad battery and it caused the starter to overload as I attempted to start the car. On the date below, a warning banner and chime signaled that our car's emergency communication system was not functional. Soon after, we noticed that the navigation system was "lost"; ie, showing our car in a different state, sometimes in water, incorrect displays of speed limits being shown, etc. Vehicle was evaluated at a BMW dealership, and the primary defective part was found to be the "sharkfin" on the roof. Water entered the roof structure (not the interior of the car) via this sharkfin, and resulted in damage to the TCB, which reportedly controls many of the car's more-advanced electrical functions. Due to unfortunate clauses in warrantees on the car--both BMW certified pre-owned coverage, and also a 3rd party service contract that was purchased at the time of purchase, from the BMW dealer, as a bumper-to-bumper "platinum" supplement to the certified pre-owned warranty, are currently in effect for this car--this defect is NOT covered. Cost to repair all involvedf parts is approximately $5,000. As a consequence of this expense, it has not been repaired, and likely will not be in the near future. A Google search about this issue yielded numerous identical incidents involving this same model/year of BMW. Several owners wondered if a recall was needed, since it is clearly a manufacturer defect with clear-cut and repeated ramifications, is very costly to repair (so is likely to NOT be repaired, in many instances), and is subject to a loophole in warranty coverage. My impression from this internet search is that other systems in the car might soon stop working. I believe it is a safety issue, now, given the failure of the emergency communication function controlled by the TCB, and might become more of an issue in the future, when/if additional functions fail.

A portion on the Airbag system was/is disabled due to an issue, known to BMW, with the wiring harness connected to the passenger seat. It is available for inspection if requested. Normal movement of the electric seat in turn pulls a wiring harness that failed by being "chaffed". This flaw results in a "Restraint System Error", passenger side - a significant problem since this harness controls an integral safety system of the vehicle and ultimately disables part of the airbag system until repaired. During inspection at the dealer's service center, the car was connected to a fault reader that reported a wiring harness/module failure due to "chaffing". This chaffing caused a short that triggered the warning light and deactivated a key air bag safety feature. I was told that normal movement of the passenger seat moves the wires and causes the system failure. After consulting with my Service Advisor, the repair was explained as "installation of a new, modified (longer) wiring harness that allows for rerouting of the wires so that the condition is corrected" What alarmed me as a consumer was when I asked if they were sure this would fix the problem, the dealer told me they see it quite often and 99% of the time it is a problem with the original design and routing of the harness. From my perspective, this indicates BMW acknowledges this is a known problem impacting the safe operation of the vehicle. The repair requires removal of the entire center console and replacing and rerouting a newly designed wiring harness. The estimate for repair to the consumer is almost $1300 - making it likely that many consumers would delay this important repair. In my opinion, this engineering flaw should be the subject of a voluntary recall at the least.

I noticed one of my daytime running lights on the driver’s side laser headlight had turned yellow, instead of white like the others. I took the vehicle to the dealership and they said that the LED module that powers that daytime running light has overheated and caused the light tube to burn and melt. The dealership advised that the passenger side is also slowly starting to do the same thing. The repair the dealership recommended is to replace both headlights, at a cost of almost $18k! I’ve seen numerous BMWs on the roads with this same issue, and this should be addressed by BMW as a design flaw. If these modules are burning plastic pieces inside the housing, they could start a fire if they get hot enough.

While driving in the city, I came across a red light. When the light turned green, my car's engine shut off and the power steering turned off (unable to turn). The screen remained on but I could not start the car. This has only happened in the city when I am driving at a speed of up to 15 miles/hr. under comfort mode with the auto/stop feature on. This happened about 5 times on different dates where my car shut off but the screen was on. My car shut down in the middle of traffic, causing more traffic and an unsafe situation. I have a 2019 BMW x5. My starter failed and I got a notification at the same time through my BMW app that there was a safety recall "RE: Recall 24V-576: Engine Starter – B12 05 24". The recall instructs the dealer that the Correction is "DME software update that will prevent the engine starter from being overloaded". This is all fine. It then gives the instruction "Note: Some vehicles may also be affected by the following technical campaign: 0012240600 Check and, if necessary, replace starter motor Please ensure that, if possible, both technical actions are processed at the same time." My issue is that the initial Recall is the clear issue causing the starter failure and they have acknowledged this in the technical campaign following. However, my vehicle's VIN is not included in the technical campaign that instructs them to replace the starter even though it was their negligence which caused the failure which they have acknowledged. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? No I paid to have the starter replaced. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Our 2019 BMW X5 triggered a warning light requiring us to pull over immediately and tow the vehicle to the nearest dealer. It currently has 35,000 miles and the dealer informed us that the oil pump failed. After research and discussion with the dealer this has occurred with multiple 2019 X5's at that particular dealer as well as others. BMW has not issued a recall or extended warranty for the oil pump that is included in the B58 Engine. That particular oil pump has casing that is made of plastic that is known to fail. In the 2020 model they then replaced that casing with metal. It is clear BMW knows of this issue and is not taking action to ensure the consumer's safety and investment is addressed.

Access to settings that only exist in iDrive BMW service says this is due to the vehicle’s “age” and recommends a full head-unit (hardware) replacement at my expense, even though this is a software-driven system. A previous identical failure on this car resolved on its own with no hardware change, which strongly suggests a software/firmware defect, not a worn-out part. This problem is widespread, not just my car. Many BMW owners report the same black-screen/“No Signal” iDrive behavior on similar models and years, often after software updates and even after multiple head-unit replacements, with no lasting fix. My backup camera is so dim at night I cannot see many obstacles. The dealer adjusted the camera to maximum brightness, but it's still so dim that I cannot see pedestrians wearing dark clothing and other obstacles behind me. Only the acoustic warning has prevented me from hitting an object or running into a person. I have talked to many other owners of this year BMW X5, and all of them have a similar complaint. The dealer adjusted the camera to its maximum night-time brightness but to no avail. The dealer then told me BMW designed the camera to be hard to see at night. I have normal night vision, as confirmed at my yearly vision exam by a licensed ophthalmologist, so I find it dubious that BMW would make their backup camera too dark to use at night. I found that shinning a bright light at the lower-left area of the instrument binacle causes the backup camera image to become much brighter and solves the visibility problem. Therefore, I think there is a BMW SW problem that dims the rearview camera too much when it believes it is night time.

while stopped in traffic on a freeway in fast lane, the vehicle was in the "stop/go" mode. When I pressed the accelerator, the engine failed to start. On multiple attempts engine would not start and I could smell electrical burn. The CHP was on site and we attempted to push the car to the side and out of the fast lane. However, since the engine would not start, there was no way to shift the car into Neutral gear. This is a design flaw and could lead a serious injury of fatality if the drive is stuck on the freeway and unable to move car. Even with Tow Truck, the car had to be dragged onto the truck bed. This is related to recall no. 25V-644. The recall should be elevated to "critical" status.

Vehicle is out of warranty. Car only has 36K miles and passengers restraint system malfunction appeared. It basically says that the passenger airbag won't deploy due to this malfunction. Union diagnosis ilthe culprit is a defective seat occupancy mat sensor module and the seat mat. Both parts should be recalled as this failure occured without outside influence. This is a extremely important component that can fail at any moment in the 2019 X5 Xdrive50i.

Today, we experienced a some kind of sudden stop in a normal speed driving. Red alert car symbol flashed on our dashboard. It is without stepping on a break but it’s like our car is braking or like abrupt stopping. No car or any object that may hinder in front of us. It was scary coz there’s car behind us in a good speed. I don’t feel like it’s safe for what we had experienced today. Please try to look at it before anything like this scenario to happen again. I am and anyone else is into safety that’s why we choose this vehicle.

Vehicle airbag/seatbelt warning light on 9/2022. Airbag (seatbelt) module replaced. Caused by condensation or leak due to BMW not sealing cupholders and placing KEY SAFETY EQUIPMENT directly under unsealed cupholders. I was told other modules likely damaged but airbags and seatbelt were first to go out. 2023 April/May - steering issues. Windshield wipers run continuously and cannot be turned off. Horn and turn signal also stopped working. Need steering column replaced. BMW said possibly also related to cupholder defect. I am concerned the unsealed cupholders are going to kill someone if airbags deploy unnecessarily or seatbelt/airbags fail. BMW should have not placed KEY safety equipment under unsealed drink holders.

I was turning left on a residential street when the steering wheel locked, the brakes would not work to stop the car from going straight and the engine would not turn off when I attempted to stop the engine once realizing that everything was failing. The electrical panel went black and I collided with a residential home. Airbags deployed, EMS, fire and Police were called to the scene and the Tow truck driver noted that all systems had failed and the car basically shut off all functionality. They had to manually push the vehicle onto the flatbed tow truck. I am concerned as this issue was a safety concern while I was driving the car and it seemed all systems failed.

The contact owns a 2019 BMW X5. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the horn and turn signals were inoperable. WHILE I WAS DRIVING THE CAR ALONE AROUND 7:30PM 5/13/2021 ON THE WAY TO A RESTAURANT, AFTER I PUSHED THE GAS PEDAL TO PASS ANOTHER CAR (ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 50MILE-55MILE/HR), THE CAR ALL OF A SUDDEN ACCELERATED ON ITSELF. I NOTICED RIGHT AWAY AFTER MY RIGHT FOOT MOVED AWAY FROM THE GAS PEDAL (FROM 50 TO 55 THEN UP TO 65MILE/HR, I STOPPED MY OBSERVATION SINCE IT WAS GETTING TOO FAST). I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL TO REDUCE THE SPEED FOR ABOUT A MILE OR TWO. AFTER I REACHED THE NEXT TRAFFIC LIGHT, I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE PEDAL VERY HARD TO MAKE THE CAR FULLY STOP, SO I DECIDED TO SWITCH THE TRANSMISSION FROM D TO P TO SEE IF IT COULD GET OUT OF ACCELERATION PROBLEM. ONCE I SWITCHED TO PARK, I TRIED TO SWITCH IT BACK TO DRIVE MODE, HOWEVER THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND AND STAYED IN PARKING MODE. I THEN TRIED TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND TURNED IT BACK TWO TO THREE TIMES, IT JUST DIDN'T ALLOW ME TO CHANGE BACK TO DRIVE MODE. I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE CAR MADE A LOT OF NOISE SINCE IT ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN. I REALIZED IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS TO SIT IN THE CAR IN FRONT OF THE TRAFFIC LIGHT EVEN WITH THE EMERGENCY LIGHT ON. SO I DECIDED TO TURN IT OFF AND LEFT THE CAR. I SMELLED A VERY STRONG BURNING SMELL EVEN THOUGH I QUICKLY MOVED AWAY FROM THE CAR. I WAITED ON THE STREET SIDE FOR ABOUT 2-3 MINUTES AND WENT BACK TO THE CAR, I WAS FINALLY ABLE TO SWITCH TO D MODE AND DROVE AWAY SLOWLY. I HAD SIMILAR PROBLEM HAPPENED LAST YEAR AROUND OCTOBER FOR 3-4 TIMES (NOT AS BAD AS IT WAS TODAY, I CAN TURN ENGINE OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON, IT WILL RETURN TO NORMAL) AND I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO BMW DEALERSHIP (BMW AT GWINNETT PLACE IN DULUTH GA, WHERE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN NOV 2019) AND THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO CREATE THE PROBLEM.
