Recalls Reported to NHTSA

The following recalls were reported to NHTSA. A recall does not by itself establish that any individual vehicle is defective.

TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

NHTSA #22V815000

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan LWB, Golf Sportswagen A7, Golf Alltrack, Golf R GP, Audi Q3, Audi A3 Cabriolet, 2019-2020 Jetta NF, Jetta GLI, Golf GTI, Atlas, Golf A7, Audi A3, 2020-2021 Atlas Cross Sport, and 2021 Atlas FL vehicles. The tire pressure monitoring system may not detect an air pressure loss in adequate time when deflating occurs among all four tires simultaneously. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."

Reported consequence: An undetected sudden loss of pressure in all four tires increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the TPMS software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 18, 2022. Complaints Filed with NHTSA

The following are consumer-reported complaints filed with NHTSA. These are unverified allegations and are not proof that any defect exists.

Exterior Lighting41 complaints

Front passenger-side daytime running light went out. Cannot be replaced individually. Must replace entire front lighting assembly at significant cost.

NHTSA #11740364

The DRLs went out at the same time. It's still not working so it's available for inspection. DRLs are obviously safety-relevant. No warning, no messages. Checking fault codes shows "module overheating".

NHTSA #11739993

Driver's side daytime running lights have gone out already after fairly low mileage. Have since discovered this is a very common issue for this model and requires entire headlight assembly replacement, which is over $1,000. This prohibitive cost lessens the likelihood of replacement for many drivers and since it is not legally required it negates the added safety value of these lights.

NHTSA #11739342

Show 38 more

The daylight running lights failed at the same time. This a closed system so VW wants 1000 per headlight unit.

NHTSA #11738502

Both LED headlight running day lights went out together.

NHTSA #11736671

This vehicle is equipped with LED Daytime Running Lights. These are designed to be long-life, however, as has been noted multiple times in this forum, half of the passenger-side DRL on my vehicle has stopped functioning. The repair cost for this item is in excess of $2,000 as the front bumper needs to be removed and the entire headlight assembly replaced. Most drivers will choose to defer replacement, thereby negating the safety value that the DRLs are intended to provide.

NHTSA #11735726

One of the headlights failed at 80,000 miles (the other headlight was replaced due to car accident years ago). Volkswagen Atlas models are consistently experiencing a failure of LED headlights prematurely when they should last 10-15 years. There is a class action lawsuit against Volkswagen to force them to recall and correct the issue as they have known and failed to correct this critical safety issue. It is unsafe to have these vehicles on the road with faulty headlights, for both the drivers and occupants as well as the other vehicles on the road with them. This particular vehicle has been inspected by a certified mechanic. The dealership would not return my calls in a timely manner and the vehicle needed to be inspected and fixed as quickly as possible as this is a safety issue. There have been no warning lights or messages from the vehicle or my VW app to notify me of this issue prior to failure or after.

NHTSA #11736044

LED passenger daytime light malfunctioned, and now LED driver's headlight has stopped working. Cost to replace each headlight was quoted by 3 dealerships at $3,000 EACH. Cannot afford to fix this major safety issue. LED lights should not be going out! It should not cost $3,000 to replace headlights! I will need to drive without lights!!

NHTSA #11735007

The integrated LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) strip within the passenger-side headlight assembly failed prematurely at 79,136 miles and remains available for inspection on the vehicle. This failure directly compromises road safety by reducing the vehicle's visibility to oncoming traffic during dawn, dusk, and inclement weather, increasing the risk of a head-on or intersection collision. While I have not yet obtained a formal dealership estimate, this is a known non-serviceable component that typically requires a full headlight assembly replacement costing upwards of $1,500 to $2,000. No warning lamps, messages, or symptoms like flickering occurred prior to the total failure. As this is a factory-installed safety component designed to last the life of the vehicle, its sudden failure suggests a widespread manufacturing defect in the LED circuitry. Out daughter used the car to go eat with a friend at a restaurant and noticed the light out when she unlocked the car.

NHTSA #11730606

Passenger side daytime running light has burned out. Driver side daytime running light is starting to burn out as well. Starting to read that this is a problem for this year make and model of vehicle.

NHTSA #11739873

LED Headlight and DRL burned out and bulbs cannot be replaced, the entire headlight assembly needs to be replaced costing upwards of $1500. Commonly known problem with VW Atlas, occurring right after the car falls out of manufacturer warranty. Dealership refuse to replace at their expense.

NHTSA #11713898

Passenger daytime running lights stop working. Vehicle has low mileage but beyond warranty due to years owned.

NHTSA #11710633

Daytime running light on passenger side has failed. Repair is complex and estimated at a minimum of $1200 for a part that should last for the lifetime of the car. Numerous other reports of this issue for 2021 VW Atlas model year.

NHTSA #11718437

The headlight on my vehicle failed, and when I took it to the dealer, I was told this is a known and ongoing issue that they deal with constantly. Despite being aware of this widespread failure, Volkswagen continues to install the same defective headlight assemblies. These are not simple bulb replacements—the entire headlight assembly must be replaced at a cost of approximately $1,900 per side, not including labor. This cost is completely unreasonable for most vehicle owners. As a result, many people will be forced to drive with non-functioning headlights because they simply cannot afford such an expensive repair. This creates a serious and unnecessary safety risk for drivers, passengers, and everyone else on the road. Volkswagen is fully aware that these headlights fail prematurely and repeatedly, yet no corrective action has been taken to redesign the component, reduce the cost, or issue a recall. Continuing to sell vehicles with a known defective and safety-critical component is unacceptable. Headlights are not a luxury feature—they are a basic safety requirement. There needs to be an immediate recall or manufacturer-covered repair for these headlights. Owners should not be financially punished for a defect that Volkswagen already knows exists, especially when the failure directly compromises vehicle safety. The current situation puts the public at risk and demands prompt action.

NHTSA #11710182

THERE IS AN INVESTIGATION FOR THIS ISSUE WHICH IS THE DRL'S/DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS FOR THE VW 2021 (2021-2023 ACTUALLY) GIVE OUT/FAIL, AND THEY CANNOT BE FIXED WITHOUT REPLACING THE $1200 ENTIRE HEADLIGHT PART. CRAZY FOR A LIGHT THAT NEW TO GIVE OUT FOR SO MANY. I REFUSE TO PAY FOR THESE IT IS OBVIOUYSLY A DESIGN FLAW ON THEIR END. IN OUR CASE, BOTH DRL'S GAVE OUT. REGULAR NIGHT LIGHTS WORK BUT THOSE DO NOT WORK DAY OR NIGHT AS THEY SHOULD

NHTSA #11737256

The cars Headlight DRL burnt out and no way to replace them or turn of warning off without paying dealership $2K to replace whole light housing. See Reddit Post: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

NHTSA #11701460

daytime running lights are not functioning and vw wants $1500 per side to replace. this is not reasonable.

NHTSA #11696432

Dual Daytime running light (DRL) LED headlights failures. The LED DRL strips integrated into the headlight assembly stopped functioning within 3 years of ownership (60,000 and 75,000) miles.. The failure requires replacing the entire headlight assembly, which can cost over $2,000 per unit, as the LED strip is not separately serviceable. DRLs are critical for vehicle visibility during daylight, reducing the risk of head-on and front-corner collisions by making the vehicle more conspicuous to other drivers. There is absolutely no reason these lights should be going out when they are intended to last up to 20 years and I believe VW is at fault and this should be a recall.

NHTSA #11694932

Passenger daytime running light has stopped working at 61,952 miles. This light is not able to be replaced by itself which is the issue. The entire lighting assembly has to be replaced costing $1400 for single, passenger side assembly, not including labor. At this cost, it is unrealistic and unreasonable to replace this safety feature every time it goes out. This is an unsafe design due to the fact that many customers would not be able to afford to pay more than $1400 to replace the light causing a potential safety hazard.

NHTSA #11690459

Passenger side LED daytime running light is out at 67,000 and is going to cost over $2k to get replaced. LED lights should not be going out that quickly. I have also found LOTS of the same complaints online for the same year, make and model.

NHTSA #11684713

Daytime Running Lights went out after 50K miles (warranty is out at this point). To fix this issue VW is requiring to change the whole light fixture, which costs more the $1,000. This is an outrageous expense to fix a single LED strip to support DRLs, and forces drivers to go without lights to avoid paying for it. This issue is VERY common on this model, with multiple online sources/forums with the same experience.

NHTSA #11680524

Drivers side DRL LED complete failure at 62000 miles. Known issue all over the internet. I bought the extended warranty. I called to check coverage and they told me absolutely not covered even though I have the platinum level extended warranty. Only fix is remove bumper and replace headlight assembly, then dealership has to supposedly reprogram the new headlight and the cruise control or they won’t work if you tried to replace the assembly at home to save money. VW obviously knows of this issue and to my knowledge has done nothing to help customers. The safety concern with this is the other solution to the DRL LED going out, if you can’t spend $2000 on a light, is to use an ob-11 and deactivate all DRLs. This could make the vehicle less visible under certain conditions and potentially lead to a collision.

NHTSA #11687716

My daylight running headlights are out, went out before 40k miles. They said they would have to replace the whole assembly for over 1000 each. I have read many people’s complaints with the same issue. How can a car company not provide safe headlights that last more than 40k miles. I cannot afford to fix it and with all these atlas on the road with people in the same financial situation it is dangerous. They should have to replace these assemblies through recall before someone gets killed.

NHTSA #11699356

Our LED headlight failed at 80,000 miles and is not just a simple bulb change. We have to replace the entire headlight and the cost is over $1000 for one.

NHTSA #11682699

Passenger side daytime running light LED strip out at 50k miles. LEDs have long life span and should not go out so soon. Concerned there is electrical issue as the vehicle has had multiple recalls including sensors and other electrical components.

NHTSA #11673279

Day Time Running Lights Burn out too quickly. They are LED lights and should last longer than 50,000 miles of the cars life span. Volkswagen does not see it covered under their extended warranty either. It is a costly repair and should be further investigated as Volkswagen has not fixed the issues.

NHTSA #11674217

The daytime running lights went out at 45,500 miles. Called dealership and I am one week out of warranty. The cost to fix one is $2000 and requires complete new assembly and reprogram cruise control. Absolutely ridiculous for a daytime running light that burned out. Should be able to replace or offer assistance from VW.

NHTSA #11670669

1. Component/System Failed, Available for Inspection? Failed passenger side LED daytime running light (DRL) strip in headlight assembly, likely due to LED burnout or wiring issue. Entire headlight unit needs replacement ($1K+ quote). Available for inspection upon request. 2. Safety Risk? Non-working DRLs reduce vehicle visibility in daylight, increasing collision risk by 10–20% (per NHTSA). Poses danger to driver, passengers, and others, especially in low-light or fog. 3. Confirmed by Dealer/Service Center? Confirmed via service center 4. Inspected by Others? Inspected by service center 5. Warning Signs Prior to Failure? No warning lamps/messages typically appear for Atlas DRL failures. Noticed issue around 55k miles; no dashboard alerts.

NHTSA #11687914

Received message that daytime side light was out in my 2021 VW Atlas. Went to the dealership and they said that it will cost $3,152.23 for entire headlight assembly to be replaced because bulb cannot be changed as it is LED. I did research on the issue in Reddit and there are many many 2021 VW Atlases with the same issue! They have also opened up complaints in NHTSA. It is cost prohibitive to fix a light on this car and a major safety issue.

NHTSA #11665048

Daytime LED running light (Front passenger side) stopped working and has not come back on. I am told the whole lighting assembly has to be replaced at a cost of $800 to $1,000. I have seen many other complaints online from owners of the same vehicle that are experiencing the same issue with one of the front LED daytime driving lights.

NHTSA #11689233

We were pulled over yesterday for having a headlight out, but it ended up not being a headlight, it was the LED runner light on the passenger-side headlight assembly. Our vehicle is only at 68,214 miles. The Volkswagen dealership quoted me about $1,800.00 to have it replaced, which I thought was exorbitant. In doing research on this issue, most 2021 Atlas have the identical issue, the LED runner lights going out at the 50k - 70k mile mark. Currently it is impossible to even find stock of new headlight assemblies because of the number of vehicles that have had this issue. This should be a recall due to a defective headlight assembly, not a cost to the consumer. I've driven several vehicles past the 200k mile mark and I have never had to have a headlight assembly replaced, and especially not after only 68k miles. It would be unusual to have to replace a headlight at that many miles, let alone an LED strip, which should essentially last the life of the vehicle. There is a group considering bringing a class-action lawsuit against VW for the faulty electrical systems in the 2021 Atlas, so I hope this gets addressed quickly.

NHTSA #11658200

The daytime running light has gone gout prematurely.

NHTSA #11654888

The LED day time running lights have started to go out. They are completely out in the passenger side and one of the two out on the drivers side. Unsafe once all are out. These lights can not be replaced as the whole housing for 2k each side. So 4k to fix a safety issue of daytime running lights.

NHTSA #11651574

Daytime running light strip (LED) on the passenger side stopped working at about 70,000 miles. The main daytime running light also does not work on that side. ONLINE FORUMS ARE FULL OF THIS VERY SAME COMPLAINT, most failing at about 50-60k miles. The LED strip is housed within the entire headlight assembly, so the repair is around $2,000. The part alone is $995 from VW. There is no option to simply replace the LED strip. This malfunction does not affect the main headlight at night, only during daytime operation. THIS PROBLEM SHOULD REQUIRE A RECALL, AS IT AFFECTS VISIBILITY BY OTHER DRIVERS. I welcome inspection, as this appears to be a very common issue. No other warning messages, etc. were given.

NHTSA #11651593

DLR lights on passenger side failed at 62k miles. Common problem with VW atlas lights.

NHTSA #11652629

LED lights on headlight are gone out! Parking lights malfunctioning! Inspected by car shop and interfering with passing state inspection!

NHTSA #11680574

My car (2021 VW Atlas SE) has 63 xxx miles, and the left side running light just went out. I took it to the dealer, who informed me this wasn't covered by any warranty and that replacing the running light would cost $1400. This is ridiculous, and so after doing more research, I found that I am among hundreds of other owners of this vehicle type who are having the same issue around the 60k mile mark. This cannot be a coincidence. Other owners suggested that I submit my claim in the hope that you will get VW to do a recall to fix this issue.

NHTSA #11630855

the headlight LED strip failed at around 50,000 miles. If replaced, it is likely to fail again. VW dealers have had to replace the entire headlight assembly since the LED strip is integrated into it. The cost for this repair is approximately $2,000.

NHTSA #11630807

The LED parking light stopped working and we can change the entire headlight. About 1500$

NHTSA #11620798

Right daytime running light went out around 60k miles.

NHTSA #11617740

Daytime running lights went out at around 72,000 miles.

NHTSA #11613213

After subscribing to the Safe Drive on the VW app, I got a warning display on my dash for service for the SOS call system. The orange triangle appeared and the SOS light turned from green to red. I cancelled the app and unsubscribed from everything. The SOS light returned to green, but the dash still has the warning triangle and says the SOS emergency call system has an issue. The car was purchased from a dealer January 2026 and has only been driven 2,000 miles.

Emergency Call (SOS) system failure / internal battery defect. This is apparently a known issue on the VW Atlas (and other VW/Audi models with Car-Net/SOS systems). Owners regularly report SOS/Emergency Call errors associated with the backup battery or the telematics module. Some dealers even acknowledge it as a “known issue” with those systems. This isn’t rare, especially in the 3–5 year window of the vehicle's age. The backup battery itself is cheap (roughly $50–$100 in most cases); however, the labor is not, because it typically requires a glove box/dash teardown and access to the module behind panels or the console. SOS-related repair costs, due to labor, are generally quoted between $850 and $1,500, depending on the city, state, and dealership. Sadly, VW knows this is an issue and refuses to do anything about it, creating a potentially dangerous situation where, in an emergency, the call button (sold as a must-have feature) will not function without this expensive battery replacement. My research shows this is an ongoing issue even in new models, yet they refuse to remedy it.

I own a 2021 VW Atlas, subject to recall 24V464. I scheduled a recall service appointment weeks in advance at Colonial Volkswagen of Medford, MA (via the VW app for 8:30 AM on Aug 19, 2025). I received multiple confirmations by email and text from VW. When I arrived on time, the Service Advisor (Frank Dasilva) told me the parts were not available and the recall could not be performed. This was never communicated beforehand. I had rearranged my schedule for this appointment, including transporting my daughter to her internship in Boston, and this caused major disruption. When I expressed my frustration, the Service Advisor raised his voice, disclosed a personal health issue, and walked away. I was then told to wait for the Service Manager, who eventually arrived but gave dismissive and contradictory explanations. He claimed that no VW dealer orders recall parts before the customer arrives because they do not know the VIN or parts required. This is false—my VIN and recall number were known when the appointment was scheduled. The Service Manager’s tone suggested that performing the recall was a “favor” since I was not paying for it, which is unprofessional and misleading. Recall work is a federal safety requirement and VW dealers are compensated by the manufacturer. Colonial VW did not prepare for my scheduled appointment, wasted my time, treated me poorly, and failed to comply with the intent of the recall process. I was left without a solution, only told I’d be contacted “when parts arrive.” I am requesting NHTSA to review Colonial VW’s handling of recall 24V464, as this appears to be a failure to ensure timely and professional compliance with a federally mandated safety recall.

I had placed my personal items - purse, keys, phone, etc. in my unlocked vehicle in a safe location behind my condo building. I was running across to mail something and come right back. When I returned a short time later, the car had locked itself with my items inside. I found out after googling this later, that multiple people have had this issue -- when their key fobs have gotten low on battery, the fob will lock itself inside the vehicle. I had no way to summon roadside assistance, and so I had to break a window to gain entry to the vehicle. I also found out that this has happened to people with children who have been inadvertently locked inside a Volkswagon. I am trying to make sure this doesn't happen to others, and I would like to be reimbursed for my broken car window. The dealership has not confirmed this. I was trying to be in touch with Volkswagon customer service about it, but they said I have no recourse because my car is past warranty. My evidence of others is based on a reddit thread. [XXX] The safety issue is obvious - if young children were locked inside, it could be a huge safety issue. The vehicle has not been inspected yet. There was no warning that my key fob was low on battery. I will be taking the car in this week to get a price for the window repair. I purchased a volkswagen atlas in 2021. Within the first year of owning the vehicle the air conditioning system had a malfunction where it would blow hot on the passenger side and remain cold on the driver side. I took it in to the dealership for service and was told the passenger side blower motor was damaged and paid $400 to have that replaced. The next summer approximately one year later the issues reappeared. I took it in for service and was told by the service writer that after a year my warranty on parts and labor has expired. So upon diagnosing the vehicle was told that the ac compressor has went out and it will be $1800. Bases on Reddit and other forums it’s tons of people having this same issue with the intermittent ac every summer. Something is wrong with these vehicles most specifically the vw atlas. Vw need to issue a recall on this issue and have it rectified as this is a costly fix that alot of owners are enduring and these are brand new vehicles.

The hood release cable of our 2021 VW Atlas broke at about 61,000 miles (so just out of warranty) and this appears to be a common issue with this year of Atlases. VW claims this is a known issue but there is no recall on this part. They want to charge me out of pocket to diagnose and repair this even though it is a faulty part. Especially considering the age of the car and how infrequently the hood release cable gets used.

NHTSA #11649733

My wife was driving the car to go get food. While she was out she called me and asked me to look at the car when she gets home because she smelled a strange smell in the care. Approximately five minutes after that call she called me again panicking that the side curtain airbags had deployed while she was driving home. She said she was not in an accident and just driving straight down the road. She also did not hit any potholes as there are none on the street where she was driving. She told me that the airbags deployed slowly and that the drivers side deployed seconds before the passengers side. The front seatbelts also locked and the car shut down on its own. She said that there were no lights on in the dash and other than the smell, there was no indication that anything was wrong. The car is currently at the dealer being checked out. The police were not called. I was able to drive the car home from the road when I met my wife on the side of the road. It is a safety risk because once the airbags deployed, she was not able to see out of the side windows and the car shut down which could have caused a car accident.

My daughter hit a deer while she was on the interstate, so she had her cruise control set at 72 mph, the deer came up out of the left/median ditch (she was in the left lane at the time). There was no warning as she did not see it at all, so there was an immediate, intense impact, enough where the hood of the car ended up opening up and smashing and coming to rest against the windshield. The Front end of the Atlas was HEAVILY damaged and NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED at all! The vehicle's seatbelt did lock up and keep her from slamming into the steering column and windshield and the vehicle's Front Assist Braking system did engage after the impact to slow her down and actually tried pulling her to the side of the road, although, that could be a flaw as well as it assumed that she was in the right lane of the road to begin with, so it pulled her to stop in the middle of the right lane of the Interstate. Thankfully it was late enough in the evening and no other traffic so she was able to figure that out in her post accident confusion and was able to get the car further off the road and call for help. The Atlas had to be towed from the scene. Prior to this incident there has been no issues with any warning lights coming on and we have had all past recalls taken care of through the VW Dealership we bought our VW from, so we assume that they were taken care of properly.

Upon a low speed curb strike, predominantly striking the rear driver tire and partially the front driver tire, during a slide under 30mph, the curtain airbags deployed in the vehicle. Reading about this online, it appears others driving this type of vehicle have had similar reports of low speed tire strikes and airbags deploying. The airbags were more of a risk than the curb strike itself. With children in approved car seats in the rear, this was of course incredibly frightening. It appears VW is aware of the low sensitivity of their sensors that deploy this system, for which this sensor has been under recall in the past. Whether my sensor was repaired correctly is not understood. There is no other vehicle damage. The vehicle has been delivered to the VW dealer for inspection. It would be ideal for the NHTSA to look into whether the VW Atlas's curtain airbag deployment at low speed tire strikes meets the threshold for safety standards of deploying airbags. As there is a previous history for airbag issues with VW, it's not unrealistic this was a fault with the car and not the driver.

The airbag error light has come on my car multiple times since I have bought it new in 2021 at VW dealership. I have brought it many times to VW service center. Last week I had a coolant leak which they did repair, I paid $1400 for it already. But at the same time, I was told there is a recall on my vehicle. I told advisor that I thought it was taken care of already but was told it is not. So they worked on the recall. But THE NEX DAY, the airbag light came on again. I am worried for the safety of my family in this car. I was quoted $872.72 to have this fixed. This airbag error directly resulted after the recall work was performed on it. not 24 hours after I picked up the car, the light came on again. I spoke to manager Ryan and was told the price can be decreased to $400. While I am driving, when I come to a stop or slow down to almost a stop my engine will periodically shut off where I need to put the car in park and turn the car off and then back on. This has happened multiple times but is especially dangerous when I am in stop/go traffic on a major highway and it happens. The check engine light does come on but the mechanics just turn the engine signal off and say there is nothing wrong. After a couple hundred miles the check engine light returns and the problem continues to persist.

Engine shut down 4 times in one day. I'd have to put it in park, in the middle of the road, and restart the engine. It seemed to happen at very low speeds. engine light came on. Took it to a local mechanic who noted the error had to do with a sensor in the grill that allows airflow into the radiator - the sensor was blocked based on the code, but it was not. The thought was perhaps something had been blocking the sensor but whatever was blocking the sensor had naturally fallen off since the mechanic found nothing actually blocking the sensor. Drove around for a few days, no issues. Heading out on vacation - about 4 hours into the drive on the highway, it stalled again, again at lower speeds in traffic. Turned around to go home (no vacation), stalled again 3 more times, all in heavy traffic. It is now at a VW dealership. There is a new code having to do with the charcoal canister but they do not believe this is the issue causing it stall. I've been reading other threads on the Atlas and this issue has been ongoing for years with no real confirmed fix or recall as far as I can tell. How is this not a safety issue; on the highway, stalling out and you have to come to a complete stop, park, restart for the engine to kick back on. Over and over again.

Hood release cable either lost tension, broke, or came loose from the clamp in the junction box and cannot open the hood. I was stopped on the side of the road, unable to open the hood. I and my family were put in excessive danger on the side of the road as I could not correct the issue without waiting for a tow truck because I could not open the hood. Dealer, as well as multiple shops in my area have confirmed this is a consistent issue with the VW Atals. There was no warning or I would have replaced it when it was under warranty. The hood release latch cable on my 2021 VW Atlas snapped, making it impossible to access the engine compartment. This happened as I was at the store to change the battery in my vehicle. I had to jump start the vehicle twice earlier that day, as the battery was wearing out. Because the hood would not open, I was unable to change the battery. Luckily, the vehicle started, so I could drive it home, but otherwise I would have been stranded with no way to start the vehicle as I would not have been able to open the hood and access the engine or battery. This is a serious safety concern. It should never happen on any vehicle, but certainly not on a vehicle that is only a few years old.

when I start my car, the infotainment center does not turn on, which means that I lose not just the luxury features that come along with it, but also the safety features, like the back-up camera and road sign recognition. Issues started in January 2025 as intermittent and are now an everyday, even multi-day occurrence. I suspect that it's due to the cold weather, as it didn't start happening until the temps got colder (snowy part of USA).. This is a safety issue, and makes me pretty concerned. I've tried to work with my local dealer, however they haven't been much help since the car's warranty expired in early January 2025. Hi- I have an atlas 2021 Volkswagen Atlas- that was recently serviced for a transmission leak. According to my mechanic, the leak was the result of the plastic cowling rubbing against the cooling tube and after 100k miles the tube wore through. This seems to be a design flaw or defect in the vehicle and not normal wear out. I have pictures of the part of that helps. Thank you

Up until failure, car showed no signs of a problem and was properly maintained. While driving under normal highway conditions one of the transmission lines blew which resulted in the vehicle breaking down and requiring a tow to the closest dealer who determined new transmission lines and a new transmission were needed. My daughter and I were in the car and the car became unsafe to drive in a very short period of time with no heads up. NHTSA #11676708

On many occasions over the past few months have had our car start to die while driving along the road. We have taken to shop, replaced battery, and no one could replicate issue. Just today my family (3 kids and my wife) were driving 35mph when the RPM started to drop randomly. We lost acceleration and while we were turning across traffic the car died. Luckily we rolled across in time to not be t boned. We turn off “auto start stop” each time we get in the car as we were told by mechanic that could be issue After it persisted randomly, we found maybe the battery was the reason, so we replaced that. Now we are one month on a new battery and keep “auto start stop” off, and it happened again today! VW forums point to a vapor canister being the culprit, and now VW has extended the warranty for this issue supposedly. I didn’t know about this at all. Very worried to have my wife and kids in that car I wish this was a recall,

NHTSA #11654364

On 3/19/2024 while pulling into my driveway towards my parking garage my car suddenly stalled wiht loss of power and wouldn't accelerate into the garage. The warning lights came on for EPC light. I looked for the code online and to my surprise I found Atlas has been plagued with several of such issues . Please see below link https://www.vwatlasforum.com/threads/2021-atlas-fuel-injector-problem.6209/ There are cases where engines have been replaced and all this just after the warranty expires. IN my case a similart thing happened. The engine stalled at 50,035 miles and I called VW corporate to ask if they could honor the warrantly as this was very close to the warranty boundary date. They declined and I had to go to a dealer for repair. On 4/02/2025 The dealer quoted me $2489 to fix everything. Dealer found Fuel injector on cylinder 1 to be leaking doewn in to cylinder causing misfire and check engine light . Dealer replaced all O-rings and 1 fuel injector in the engine . It is really surprising to me that this is a known issue with O-ring and fuel injector and this has not been a part of recall. Had the loss of power happened on a highway and a truck was behind me I would have been in a major unsafe incident. All of this occurred when I and my kids were having a personal trauma of passing away in a car accident of a loved one which increased my grief.

The hood release latch cable snapped, which makes it impossible to open the hood for an emergency or maintenance. The cable is a poor design that is prone to breaking, and from looking online is an extremely common occurrence for the Atlas. It also costs $500-$800 to repair for each occurrence and the vehicle is a safety concern until repaired due to the risk of not being able to open the hood in the event of an emergency.

NHTSA #11735047

The hood latch cable snapped preventing the hood from being opened in the event of an engine fire. The dealer stated this is a common issue with this make and model vehicle.

I own a 2021 VW Atlas. My daughter owns a 2020 VW Atlas. Both vehicles have had a nonfunctioning hood latch. What this means is you cannot under any circumstances open your hood. So, if you need to do any of the multitude of under hood services you cannot. I had to wait weeks for my VW dealer to get it in to make the repair. After speaking with my service advisor at my VW dealership, it turns out this is a frequent problem for VW Atlas owners. A casual search online shows many incidents of the hood latch system failures. This should most certainly be a recall, fully covered by VW. This occurrence does not appear to be random or unusual, so it is clearly a (part or component) design flaw.

I was driving on the Highway, and went to accelerate and my car went into Limp Mode in the middle of the highway and I was almost not able to get to the emergency lane due to not being able to accelerate. I took it to the nearest auto mechanic shop, and they informed they could not work on it or diagnose due to it being a Volkswagen. I then took it to the nearest Volkswagen dealership, and they said they have seen a lot of 2020 and newer Volkswagen cars going into Limp mode randomly and not starting back up. They also removed the codes and diagnostic issues that were coming up. They said it was a fuel pump issue which they replaced and two days later my car went into Limp mode again on the highway for the exact same reason, and my car wont start again. Every Mechanic and tow truck driver I have talked to have all said the same thing with Volkswagens especially the newer ones going into Limp mode and not starting. This car is not safe and accidents will happen if it is not fixed.

NHTSA #11707263

We bought a 2021.5 Volkswagen Atlas that, starting around 15,000 miles, began having computer-related issues that were reported but never truly repaired. Over time, those issues escalated into serious drivability and safety problems. Beginning in mid-2025, the car started driving poorly. It had hesitation, dragging, poor fuel economy, and then began stalling, sometimes at idle and sometimes while driving. At first, repairs like a battery replacement were tried, but they did not fix the problem. In August 2025, the car stalled on the interstate in Nashville with flashing EPC and check engine lights and would not restart. Our family, including our children, was stranded in an unsafe situation. The car had to be towed, and a fuel pump was replaced. Even after that repair, the stalling and warning lights continued. Later in August, when the car continued to stall, Don Jacobs Volkswagen told us the problem was a warranty-covered EVAP (carbon) canister and that repairing it should resolve the issue. It did not. In December 2025, the car stalled again with flashing warnings and was deemed unsafe to drive. It was towed back to Don Jacobs, where a second fuel pump replacement was performed. In January 2026, the check engine light came on again and the car was returned to the dealership. At that time, we were told the EVAP canister had been left unattached from prior testing, not from the most recent repair. Since then, the vehicle has continued to drive poorly, with ongoing hesitation and dragging. In total, the vehicle has been in the shop four times, including three visits to the same dealership, and no one has been able to diagnose or permanently repair it. The dealership has told us they cannot proceed unless specific fault codes appear, even though the vehicle continues to malfunction and send diagnostic alerts through the Volkswagen app. Because of the repeated stalling, unresolved repairs, and lack of a clear path to fix the problem, we do not feel the vehicle

I continue to receive an error message to " check rear tail light " ... I have had the actual light and wiring assembly replaced. The error message continues. I have taken it to two VW dealerships - neither of which know how to fix the problem, and can only suggest days of a wild goose chase to find the problem. One dealership opined that the wiring was coroded, which was causing the error message. This raises other safety concerns of fire, etc.

My passenger side LED daytime running light failed. We just crossed over 50k miles. This is a 1300 part. After reading online it seems this is a major issue with these vehicles and around this mileage. This appears to be something that needs to be investigated and the manufacturer should have to cover under recall. It’s likely not a coincidence there are this many people reporting the same issue on the same vehicle models/years.

I then brought the car back and they heard the sound, wanted to explore and take apart the engine and found I have a collapsed lifter on the exhaust cam which if a defect, should be completely covered by the manufacturer not just a portion of the repair. Also, this could cause further issues and damage with the car which is concerning since it had been going on for some time. I am just looking to see what further resolution can be made in regard to this. My car is still in the shop since last week. Allegedly reported: 2 injuries (as reported to NHTSA). NHTSA #11731263

On January 16, 2026, the 2021 Atlas had a severe gas leak and a large pool of gas was observed underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the VW dealership in Bradenton, FL. The dealership stated they needed to take the car apart as it was suspected the fuel injectors were leaking. After disassembly, the technician stated the #3 fuel injector had a severe leak and there was so much gas, he couldn't be certain if fuel injectors #1 and #5 may also have issues but recommended replacing all 3 fuel injectors and the fuel rail. The repair cost was $3300, which was not covered by my warranty as it expired 6 months prior. History of issue - shortly after purchasing the vehicle in June 2021, a gasoline smell was noticed when parked in the garage. On October 19, 2021, the vehicle was taken to VW in Bradenton for the gas smell, they could not replicate the issue and replaced the charcoal canister. After the replacement, a gas smell was still noticeable and taken back to VW. VW again said they could not replicate the issue and stated nothing was wrong with the vehicle. It was noticed there was a previous NHTSA investigation on this issue. This is a serious issue and the car could have caught on fire. A large amount of gasoline was leaking from this vehicle.

Tire: Continental CrossContact LX Sport 255/50 R20 105T Incident Description: While traveling about 65mph, in the center lane of I-40, under clear weather conditions, the vehicle, a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas SEL Premium, experienced a sudden and catastrophic failure of the left rear tire. No object or pothole was hit in the road. The failure was characterized by a loud noise, an immediate deceleration of the vehicle, and significant vibrations. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to the failure. Actions Taken: The vehicle was safely maneuvered from the center lane to the right shoulder of the highway without further incident. Upon exiting the vehicle, a visual inspection revealed that the left rear tire had exploded, causing extensive damage to the vehicle’s left side. The damage included significant harm to the wheel well, rear suspension, and other structural and mechanical components. Additionally, remnants of the tire were found in the middle of the highway that were unable to be retrieved safely. Subsequent Measures: The vehicle was towed from the scene on a flatbed truck to a repair center and damage was repaired. Tire was submitted to Continental for review under a property damage claim. Continental declined culpability, citing potential previous damage to the tire sidewall that may not have been visible. Tire had no visible damage prior to the blow-out.

The car began revving at lights when I was in drive and stopped at red lights. The normal at rest rev is 0.75 however I have seen it as high as 1.5 and had to put the car into park to reset the acceleration. This had been consistently happening over the past month. The first visit to the dealer, I needed a new battery... that didn't fix the issue. The tech said that after the battery was replaced that the scan showed no error codes. The only codes before the battery replacement were low voltage indicators throughout the car. The next day the same issue happened again. The second scam showed no faults however I asked them to clean the throttle body (which they never suggested) and they did. They said that they recalibrated the new clean throttle body measurement to the computer. For the following 10 days, when I stopped at a light, the tachometer was perfectly stable at 0.75 and there was no "jumping" around like before. Until this day, the acceleration happened at a "stop". However on day 11 after the throttle cleaning, I was SLOWING DOWN to approach a red light and the tachometer revved to 3.0 and I needed to stop immediately and throw it into park. This is so dangerous. I may cause an accident by either lurching forward or needing to hit the breaks to stop the acceleration. There are no error or warning lights that show on the dashboard!!! After the battery was changed, the dealership said they had someone drive it for 10 miles to recreate the issue but found none yet it started up the next day. GROK has been helpful. It suggested first the throttle cleaning which did help, and three other repairs. I'm planning to pay a shop that deals with German cars specifically to scan and evaluate. The car has 43,000 miles on it. This is a testament to German engineering? No longer. I have never seen this in any other of my vehicles. All three uploads failed even though I got them to the most minimum of info.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The base to my baby’s car seat. We have the Maxi-Cosí Peri 180 Rotating Car Seat. My husband and I were placing the car seat to clip in to the base. When doing so it span around and would not stay locked I place. Once we clipped the car seat in and turned it to lock it kept spinning even when the lock button symbol showed it was locked. I took my baby out of the car seat and my husband tried to see if maybe the car seat needed to be reinstalled or fixed. But that did not resolve the issue. The car seat kept spinning around and not locking still. I do have doctor appts and many school events for my daughter at school this week. I cannot afford to purchase another car seat right now. I am going to have to use the seat belt to keep the car seat from spinning on its own. I am at all costs trying to my hardest to have to leave home. As it’s is honestly frightening. How was the child’s safety put at risk? My Child’s life was put as risk by the base not staying secure and spinning. As well as not staying locked to keep him safe. Also, this happened to us while we were at a store so we had not choice but to put him back in the car seat and my daughter and I held the car seat in place while my husband drove back home. As we did not want to get into and accident and the car seat not keep our baby safe. This was scary as I’m wondering now how low he this base been this way. So glad I caught it as I do not want to put my baby back in the car seat. We need to get another brand because we are mortified. I have had issue after issue with this car ever since I got it. Within the first year of my lease, my car was at the dealership for 4 to 5 months. Most of it in one long stint. The vehicle was consistently having problems. All the while, I’m paying for a car I wasn’t even able to drive for a huge chunk of year 1. One time, the car completely shut down and stopped in the middle of the freeway with my three young children in the car with me. The brakes on this car have been an issue since I bought it as well. Not only have the brakes squeaked the entire time I’ve owned the car, VW has since come out and said that the brakes are defective but they’re unwilling to offer any solution. There have been factory issues with this vehicle many many times that have caused real safety issues. Rarely did Volkswagon actually offer any sort of fix or realistic timeline for when I can expect things to be addressed. Even in some cases, they just completely ignored me as if I’m just a number and not an actual customer Who drives his children in this car. This was my third Volkswagen. I have always sang the praises of VW. But this experience has quite literally made me never want to buy another Volkswagon product again. I have about nine payments remaining on my lease and I am anxious to move on to a better safer vehicle with a brand that does right by the consumer. Volkswagon told me that even with all of what I’ve been through with Volkswagon, which is on the record by the way in the form of repair orders, as well as cost to customer service, I did not qualify for a buyback on my vehicle. Nor would they let me just return my lease. The dealership has basically said that their hands are tied. And corporate has repeatedly done nothing, and turned me away. I asked that you guys step in not only for me in particular, but for all the other Volkswagon owners who are unhappy. And there are many. Especially those who drive the same make, and model is me, the atlas. Thank you.

Vehicle Speed Control,Engine,Fuel/Propulsion System1 complaint

The car stalls and turns off when operating at a slow speed, both in forward or reverse. This is a serious and potentially deadly problem. With my two young children in the car, I was turning left across three lanes of oncoming traffic. When I began to accelerate, my car stalled in the middle of the first lane. I had to figure out what happened, put it in park, restart the car and finish my turn before being hit by oncoming traffic. This has happened 2-3 times each day since this started last week. This has nothing to do with Eco mode or automatic start/stop feature. I am familiar with both of those and disengage them when I start the car. The car has approx 28k miles and is well maintained. It is still well within warranty. The check engine light came on and the code it throws is P0496 for a bad EVAP system. I took it to VW dealer and they re-created and diagnosed the problem. Essentially, the EVAP system has faulty parts and it is causing the gas tank to collapse. The EVAP canister, the purge valve and the gas tank all need to be replaced. The problem is they do not have the parts to replace the gas tank. And they have no idea when they are going to get them. Literally, no time horizon. The VW service advisor admitted that they’ve seen ‘some frequency’ with this problem lately, mainly on 2019-2023 models. It’s a parts issue, not a wear & tear nor maintenance issue. If you look this up online, you’ll see hundreds of posts about this issue with similar scary situations like mine. Couple this with the active recall already in place (passenger airbag may not deploy in an accident) and there’s no solution for that recall, either. My family feels in jeopardy every time we drive our family car. Why is there not a recall for the gas tank collapse? How can we compel VW to produce a remedy in a timely manner? This is going to be a fatal issue for some family. Please help. I am happy to document and share photos/ videos of the situation.

Power Train,Fuel/Propulsion System1 complaint

In May I brought the vehicle to the dealership because the vehicle was turning off at low speeds (exiting a parking lot) or switching from Drive to Reverse. This was in conjunction with the check engine light coming on. The dealership diagnosed it as a fuel sensor failure, which they told me was safe to drive, and they'd order the part. I went back the next week when the sensor had been received and the repair was made. Last week, the low fuel alert flashed when I knew the vehicle was not low on fuel. The alert was not stable for a few days (it turned on and then turned back off, and then on again), and the vehicle started to have the same issue of stopping at low speeds. I had it towed to the dealership because I was too worried to drive it. The dealership diagnosed it with a 'swollen and leaky gas tank'. They sent photos upon request and the gas tank appears to have a tear. It is not due to any accident or road debris. The VW dealership has recommended a complete gas tank replacement, and let me know the gas tanks are on back order and did not have a date it would be available. This is extremely dangerous situation because 1. it was leaking gas and 2. it was coming to a stop. I drive around children (my own and others) and I can't imagine if something had happened while I was in driving around a car of kids. I read on different sites (Reddit and other car sites) and it seems the stopping problem with the Atlas is somewhat common, unfortunately. I am curious if it's due to a bad gas tank or if it is a separate malfunction with the vehicle. I called the Volkswagen Care Line and was told that they were sorry, but my vehicle was no longer under warranty, so they were unable to give me any information or guidance.
