Recalls Reported to NHTSA

The following recalls were reported to NHTSA. A recall does not by itself establish that any individual vehicle is defective.

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER CLOCKSPRING/SPIRAL CASSETTE

NHTSA #25V040000

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2023 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross Hybrid, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Tacoma, Lexus RX350, 2023-2024 NX250, and NX350 vehicles that may have been incorrectly repaired under previous NHTSA recall number 23V-480. An electrical connection inside the steering column's spiral cable assembly may be insufficiently welded, causing the connection to separate and deactivate the driver's air bag. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Reported consequence: A deactivated driver's air bag will not deploy as intended, increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Colant bypass valve

NHTSA #11688933

If raining you stop in red light the engine is shut off need to wait about 10 minutes and start again why they no recall this problem that dangerous

NHTSA #11664769

As I stopped at the stoplight the vehicle enter the automatic shut off pause as it should when the brake is firmly pressed. when I released the brake the engine did not restart. instead the following message showed on the vehicle information center in the dash: ENGINE STOPPED, STEERING POWER LOW. then it prompted me to restart the car. I have to put the car in PARK, depress the brake and press my start button to restart the car. This happen in an intersection! This is the third time and it seems it happens in wet conditions. to temporarily remedy the problem I have deactivated the gas saving automatic engine stop. The manufacturer and dealer have been contacted.

The car shuts off completely when I brake at a stop light. When I lifted off my foot from the brake pedal it didn't restart. It had completely shut off and I had to put the car in park and restart in order to drive. This is dangerous as when the light turned green I could not move and cars behind me are already in drive. This incident has happened 5 times and I took the car into Toyota and they said they could not diagnose the code.

NHTSA #11573787

Stopped at a stop light and the engine automatically shut off as expected, however warnings appeared on the dashboard indicating that the engine stopped and power steering was low. I had to turn on my hazards at a very busy intersection as the light turned green so I could completely turn off the vehicle and restart it. This happened twice in the same trip two days ago and has happened once before a few months ago. Very dangerous.

NHTSA #11568231

This has happened several times since I have bought the car in October 2023. Every time I am driving in the rain, stopped at a red light, with the windshield wipers engaged my car completely shuts off (no it is not the auto-start/stop feature). I receive the message stating “engine stopped, press brake firmly to restart. Power steering low.” Everytime I have been at a red light and in order to get the car to start again, I have to put my car in park, then turn it back on. This is a very dangerous issue as I worry if it will happen while I am driving with wind shield wipers engaged. So far it has happened at a red light everytime. I have already taken it into the dealer and they thought they solved the problem with a software update, but it just happened again, three times today (1/22/24).

NHTSA #11567141

Rattling noise while climbing uphill and the cross is loosing engine power.

NHTSA #11565696

Engine stopped while the car was stopped at a red light, later at a stip sign and later while at a stop in traffic. A message popped up on the screen that indicated “Engine Stopped…Steering Power Low”. Had to put the car in park and restart the vehicle. 5 times it happened in one rainy afternoon while using the intermittent wipers and also while not using the wipers at all.

NHTSA #11555361

Idling in drive foot on break at stop light, 12197 miles and UTD on service and the “engine stopped” and indicated “power steering low”. Had the put in park and restart vehicle.

NHTSA #11554358

Sunday 10/22/23 while idling and brakes engaged at red light. Engine failure again at 11,619 miles. Had to put in park and restart vehicle and put in drive. This is the 4th time in 11 months. It idles weird as well.

NHTSA #11551585

Some of the times when the function Autostart/Stop is on and the windshield wipers are active the car shuts down and throws engine lights on the car and the car won’t start after releasing the brakes, the car panics , and only will start again when moving from D to Park again and pressing the button .

NHTSA #11551810

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The failure became persistent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the failure had not been diagnosed. The contact stated that the vehicle had been taken to the dealer twice due to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 100.

NHTSA #11588094

It was a rainy day. I stopped and about to turn left, there was a check engine warning and it said “ ENGINE Stop press the break firmly to restart”. I was on full break and it dis not went away. I had to park it and on and off the car. It happened twice.in 3 minutes interval.

NHTSA #11524429

- While stopped at a red light my engine turned off. A message appeared that read ' not ready to drive, press break pedal, and push engine switch to start. Then another message appeared that read ' Engine stopped, steering power low.' It also said ignition with a check engine symbol light on. - My safety and others was okay, I suppose. But had I not been able to start my car I would have caused a lot of traffic. - I just bought this vehicle about a month ago, it is brand new and has been inspected. -There were no warning lamps or messages. The engine just turned off and I was not able to start the car for a while. This has happened twice now, both times while my windshield wipes were on as it was raining.

NHTSA #11519742

The auto stop start feature engaged at a red light on a rainy day. When I let off the brake instead of the car automatically starting it stalled and gave me an error message flashing between “Engine stopped, press brake firmly to restart” and “engine stopped steering power low”. I pressed the brake and nothing. Pressed the start/stop ignition and nothing. Had to put car in park and press start/stop ignition again to get it moving. This was on a busy roadway in the rain& is not safe at all! Others are reporting this same malfunction but Toyota pretends it isn’t happening. This is unacceptable.

NHTSA #11515658

I drove to a restaurant this evening. After starting the car and backing up to go back home, an engine light came on. I was trying to make a left hand turn out of the restaurant on a busy road when the car completely shut off in the middle of the road of oncoming traffic. Someone stopped to help me move the car. I turned the car back on, the engine icon did not come on, and I was able to drive home without any problems. This is very worrisome and potentially very dangerous. I can't imagine what would have happened had this been on the highway.

NHTSA #11513119

Twice, at a stop, the engine turned itself off. The car dash alerted the engine turned itself off and the warning alert sounded. The car/ignition key had to be turned off, then on to restart the vehicle. The first incident we had about 50-60 miles on the car. Today’s incident we had about 1080 miles on the vehicle. Our issue is similar to this. Both times we did not notice if the “low steering” indicator was present. We were too shocked and hurried to notice. https://youtu.be/3Pf4g40bYas

NHTSA #11511610

I was driving my brand new 2023 Corolla Cross FWD L Trim on a highway when I stopped at a red light. I have the Stop/System enabled on my car to get better gas mileage, but suddenly the steering wheel locked and the car would not start again when the light turned green. The "Check Engine" light came on and the dashboard told me to "Press Firmly on Brake to Restart Engine". I did this multiple times with no success. The dashboard also said that my "Steering Power was Low". I had to turn the car on and off again with my key in order to get it to work. Luckily, there was not much traffic when I was out, but this was an incredibly dangerous situation. It was also raining outside. I have only had my car for two weeks and it has 180 miles on it at this point. This is the first time it has happened for me, but I have seen a concerning number of people report the same problem for this car.

Exterior Lighting12 complaints

SAFETY HAZARD! TAILLIGHTS ARE POORLY DESIGNED: NOT CLEARLY VISABLE AT NIGHT(BAD WEATHER) FOR THE VEHICLES BEHIND. I WAS ALMOST REARENDED AT NIGHT BECAUSE OF THIS; AS THE PERSON BEHIND ME, TOLD ME. THEY NEED TO BE ON THE BACK OF VEHICLE FOR PROPER VISUALIZATION FOR VEHICLE BEHIND. YOU CAN ONLY SEE THE BACK TAILIGHTS AT NIGHT IF YOUR ON THE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THAT IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MOTORISTS.

NHTSA #11689146

Dark spots on the road with the LED headlights on low beam. This is very distracting and causes me to focus on the dark spots. Very dangerous when driving on winding roads at night. A lot of deer on and on the side of the rural roads and the dark spots take my focus away.

NHTSA #11630908

REAR TRUNK AREA LIGHT NOT BRIGHT.

NHTSA #11595898

Show 9 more

There is an issue with the head lights. There are shadows in the lenses or covers that create a distraction while you are driving. I was told that Toyota did it not to have lights go into on coming cars but they make it hard for the driver to see also because it makes it look like something is in the road. I feel that they should change this cause it's a not to good of a design and it could cause a accident. Thanks

NHTSA #11587759

The rear running lights on my new Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid SE were not working as they were wired improperly from the factory. I was pulled over by a policeman driving at night because my car was not visible at night due to the lack of running lights. This is very dangerous as this is a factory defect that can cause rear end collisions! I immediately made an appointment with Toyota and the dealer told me upon thorough inspection that it was a factory defect. I was given a loaner car as my car is unsafe to drive. However it is taking Toyota a very long time to fix the problem. I believe that many other Toyota Corolla Cross cars have this wiring defect and that these are accidents waiting to happen! Thank God that policeman pulled me over and notified me as it may have saved me from a serious accident. I believe that all Toyota Corolla Cross SE 2023 should be recalled to have the rear running lights inspected!

NHTSA #11568361

The taillights on corolla cross hybrid S and SE of the USA model of the Corolla Cross are very unsafe. They only light up the very corner of the car, unlike the XLE models that extend onto the tailgate with LED lights. I just bought this vehicle 3 months ago and have several cars behind me flashing at me to let me know that my lights are off (which are turned on, by default the larger light piece on tailgate is not getting eliminated unless you have XLE trim). I feel that without more illumination in the rear of the Corolla Cross, vehicle is susceptible to getting rear-ended at night while stopped at traffic lights or stop signs where there are no street lights. Toyota should have a recall and replace those lights to help illuminate the vehicle.

NHTSA #11558416

Driving at night with low beam headlights there is a very distinct shadow that shows up especially on curves. The shadow moves back and forth on the curves. Dealer says that is normal but it's really scary when it happens

NHTSA #11558935

See attached document for complaint

NHTSA #11576810

Toyota is aware of the situation. Dark shadows and cloud markings appearing only on left side of the vehicle when driving at night. Videos and pictures were given and shown to this Toyota service department this being done after an employee at the Toyota at the avenues driven with me at there closing time when it was dark stated this is a defect that Toyota is already aware of and other customers have had the same issue. Vehicle left at Toyota for five days. Stated was test driven, had removed the left led light for inspection. And Toyota inspector and GM got involved for evaluating the situation. Per the Toyota documentation state. “Headlights are within factory, spec and black spot seen is from the LED projector, normal operations when compared to other vehicles, no cases currently out for any repairs or replacements.” Ends statement. The Toyota dealership at the Avenues has acknowledged and is aware of the current situation of there 2023 vehicles. The Attorney General as been notified. This website will not allow uploads of pictures or documents.

NHTSA #11563685

Tail lamps on this car are very small and dim compared to other vehicles. Have been told by other drivers that they are not very visible. Tail lamps are working correctly, this seems to be a problem with the design of the tail lamps.

NHTSA #11547636

When the headlights are on Low, not High beam, there is a dark horizontal and vertical streak (shadow) in the illuminated area in front of the vehicle. The dark area looks like an L turned on it's side to the right. It is the same for both right and left headlights. This shadow area prevents full illumination of the roadway ahead of the vehicle. This also is a distraction and causes the driver's eyes to drift to the dark areas and further degrades nighttime driving safety. Per Toyota Corolla Cross Forum, this problem is across the board for the Cross vehicle, not just mine. When the lights are on Low and you hold a paper in front of either light, the dark streak is easily seen.

NHTSA #11545816

The headlights of the 2023 Toyota Corolla cross have a major defect, in that the bulb element casts a big shadow in the head light spread causing a huge distraction while driving. I personally have swerved to avoid colliding with an object just to learn it is said shadow. When taken to the dealership for inspection, the invoice states "inspected and verified concern. Dark spot being seen is normal condition, it is the element of the bulb casting a shadow. No repair required." This is unacceptable. Off paper the manager also made the remark that other owners have made the same complaint. Again, this is completely unacceptable.

NHTSA #11520513

Electrical System,Engine11 complaints

My 2023 Corolla cross XLE, at least 5 times since ownership, has experienced a complete engine shut off at stop lights when driving in the rain with windshield wipers on. A message appears on the driver display saying that the engine shut off and the brake needs to be pressed hard and start button must be pushed to start the engine again. It seems to only occur in association with the engine stop/start capability that is engaged when the vehicle comes to a complete stop and the break pedal is pushed extra to engage the engine. This may sound like the normal start/stop function to save fuel, but it is not. Normally, the capability turns the engine back on upon release of the brake pedal. This issue is very different, in that the engine shut down is not normal, and requires in real time traffic, returning the vehicle to park and starting it up again before putting the gear in drive again. This is very dangerous in traffic and needs a recall fix as soon as possible.

NHTSA #11589557

It was a snow/ rain day I had my wipers on and was stopped at a traffic light when my engine stopped and I got a message on my dashboard “ engine stopped power steering low”. This vehicle is new with less than 5000 miles. I had to turn off the engine and restart the car in the middle of traffic.

NHTSA #11564463

Vehicle stalled while driving with both front and rear wind shield wipers on. It was raining when this occurred. We were in heavy traffic and vehicle would not move, putting us at risk. The dealer states that they are unaware of this failure occurring in the 2023 corolla cross model. The failure happened suddenly without any type of warning.

NHTSA #11582326

I have now had two separate instances where the start / stop system in my car led to the engine stalling out at a stoplight, which was very dangerous. The car displayed messages to press the brake firmly to restart engine, which did not work either time, and that power steering would be low. Both times, I had to put the car in park and complete restart the car. Please note that unlike other reports, it was not raining nor were the windshield wipers activated during either instance.

NHTSA #11529812

While stopped at a stop light, the automatic on/off initiated as usual. However, twice in the past 24 hours the engine has stopped and the driver display provided a message stating “engine stopped” and prompting me to depress the brake harder to start the engine—this action did not restart the vehicle and it had to be put in parked and fully turned off and on to restart both times. The display also stated “steering power low” when the engine stopped message displayed.

NHTSA #11527974

It was raining and wipers were on. I was at a busy intersection at a red light. All of a sudden, the engine cut off and the dash read a message "Engine Stopped Steering Power Low" and then "Press brake firmly". Pressing the brake did nothing. The car would not start. When the light turned green, I had to just turn on my hazard lights to let the cars behind me know. It created a huge hazard for me and the oncoming traffic because my car could not move. After the immediate hazard had passed. I was able to put it in park, turn the car off (while at the red light) and turn it on again. It is a 2023 Corolla Cross with about 500 miles on it.

NHTSA #11523781

* What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Likely Start/Stop feature (the feature that turns off the engine when stopped to improve fuel efficiency, then automatically restarts when you need to go). * How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? - Car unpowered while in traffic. * Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? - No * Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? - No * Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, warning indicators only came on as/after the car shut off. When coming to a stop, the engine will turn off (this is expected). However, occasionally when this happens, an error message displays on the screen and the engine does not turn back on. This leaves you at a stop light/sign with a powered off car requiring putting the car in park and restarting the engine. So far, each time this has happened it was raining and the windshield wipers were on.

NHTSA #11522338

I came to a stop in traffic. It was raining and my windshield wipers were on. The auto-stop feature engaged. When I took my foot off the brake, the vehicle vehicle failed to auto-start and prompted to put it in park and press the start button.

NHTSA #11516544

When stopped at a red light with “auto stop/start” on, in the rain with wiper blades on INT level, my car engine shut off and showed a safety message reading “engine stopped, low power steering” and then “press brake firmly to restart” which also did not work when I tried. I was stopped in traffic for a few moments before I was able to fully turn off and restart my car to clear the warning. Another time this happened was stopped in a driveway, also in the rain with my wipers on.

NHTSA #11515723

On 4/4/23 I stopped at a traffic light the Stop/Start system engaged. When the light changed to green I took my foot off the brake to put on the gas and as I did so the car cut completely off. I got a check engine light on the dash and a loud beep. As other cars started accelerating I did not know what to do. I eventually figured out that I needed to put the car in Park and restart with the key. The car did restart and I immediately drove it to the dealership. Upon arrival they told me the car did not have any recalls, but it should since this is a serious and dangerous safety issue. The car was put through diagnostic, but no error codes were found. I have seen by information I've gotten from this site and other sources that this appears to be an issue with 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross'.

NHTSA #11515460

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated that while at a traffic light, the vehicle shutoff and failed to restart after several attempts. The message "Malfunction - Take to Dealer" was displayed. The contact stated that she shifted into park(P) and pressed the START button, and the vehicle responded as needed. However, the failure reoccurred several times while at a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed the contact that the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

NHTSA #11518857

Steering,Electrical System,Engine9 complaints

I was driving on a cold day. When I stopped at a stoplight seeking to make a left turn, the car would not accelerate when I pressed the gas pedal. I looked down and saw the following warning sign "Engine Stopped, Steering Power Low" appear on the dashboard. However, since the car was not in park, it had rolled forward and was close to the being in the nearest lane of oncoming traffic. It was also difficult to steer to avoid creeping closer to oncoming traffic. Although it did not cause an accident, it easily could have. I took the car to several mechanics, because the car is under a CarMax warranty. However, none of the diagnostics revealed anything of concern (no weak battery, lack of power steering fluid, etc.). The mechanics said they had heard about this happening, but were unable to pinpoint any reason for it occuring. This seems like a serious flaw.

NHTSA #11731777

On [XXX], and again on [XXX], vehicle began beeping while driving on the freeway and flashing the following warning messages: 1) 12-Volt Battery Charging - System Malfunction - Stop in a Safe Place - See Owner's Manual 2) AWD System Malfunction - 2WD Mode Engaged - Visit your Dealer 3) Voltage Abnormality - Steering Power Low - Visit Your Dealer Vehicle shut down and lost power steering while driving on the freeway. My safety was put at risk as I could not easily pull my car over to a safe place due to the car losing power, not turning back on, and power steering turning off. This may have resulted in severe injury or death if I had not been able to eventually pull over. Additionally, the safety of others was put at risk as we were travelling at freeway-level speed, which may have resulted in other vehicles being unable to stop, and consequently crash, if my car had stayed in the freeway lane. Both times I had the vehicle towed to Beaverton Toyota Dealership (Address: 4300 SW Murray Blvd, Beaverton, OR 97005 / Phone: (503) 626-7200) to be inspected and serviced. The first time I was told it was a bad battery cell, which was replaced on 07/26/25. However, the same situation happened after this replacement on 07/27/25. Currently, vehicle is at Beaverton Toyota dealership being inspected. Vehicle was purchased at Wilsonville Toyota (Address: 9155 Boeckman Rd, Wilsonville, OR 97070 / Phone: (503) 582-9040). NHTSA #11676618

When driving to work it’s the 4 times the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross turns on the engine light and starts beeping with the power steering low message and shuts down and I am unable to continue driving I have taken it 4 times to Toyota dealership with them continue to say no issue is found. For me to get the vehicle working again I have to completely turn it off lock it and then unlock it and turn it back on. This is unacceptable and a big hazard issue because it does this in the middle of traffic without any indication.

I bought this car less than a month ago! I pulled out of a parking lot and was waiting to turn left when my car suddenly shut off with a loud alarm sound. The check engine light came on as well as a steering pressure light. The dashboard read to press the brake firmly into the ground to start the car..it did not start. I was able to put the car in park and after 3 attempts get the car to start. I was in rush hour traffic with many cars around and behind me honking their horns and yelling all while I was stuck. There was no warning it simply just shut off in the middle of traffic. I am now waiting for it to be inspected by the service department where I purchased it from.

NHTSA #11552174

My vehicle was stopped at a stoplight with the start stop engine feature engaged. I had my windshield wipers on, and it was raining heavily, when suddenly that car turned completely off and started emitting a loud beep. There was a power steering error on my dash and the wheel locked itself completely, the car would not restart at all. There was a message on my dash to firmly press the brake, and the car would restart, but pressing the brake did nothing. I was stuck in the middle of an intersection in a vehicle that is less than two months old in the middle of traffic, and live in a city, where it rains continuously for several months out of the year. Toyota is aware of this issue, but there aren't any fixes available for a vehicle that will turn itself off when using the windshield wipers while it's raining.

NHTSA #11548036

While driving home, it was raining and had wipers going. I'd never driven in the rain yet since purchasing. I was at a stop light, and the auto start/stop was activated so the car was stopped. When I tried to drive upon the light turning green the car turned off and I got a message that said "engine stopped. Steering power low". Then I got another message saying "press brake firmly to restart engine" which didn't work. I had to switch to park. Turn it off and then turn it back on in order to get moving again.

NHTSA #11522754

I was stopped at a red light and the engine cut off as it usually does (the car has stop/start system that is automatically enabled each time you turn the car on). When the light turned green, I pressed the gas pedal. The car froze in place and began beeping. Several indicator lights flashed on the dashboard. The dashboard said, "Ignition OFF. Press brake firmly to engage." I pressed the brake firmly but nothing happened. I turned on my hazard lights and put the car in park, thinking that might help. I attempted to turn the car off by pushing the button, but it did not turn off. The car refused to do anything and was simply frozen in place for about 3 minutes. After approximately 3 minutes of me having to direct traffic to go around me in the rain in a busy intersection during rush hour, the car simply stopped beeping and removed the error message. When I got home, I googled the issue and discovered that this is common in 2022 and 2023 Corolla Crossovers when both the automatic stop/start system and the windshield wipers are both engaged simultaneously. Since it frequently rains where I live, I am now I am scared to drive the car with automatic stop/start on. Since the car automatically turns this feature on every time you turn the car on, this requires disabling this feature anytime I want to go anywhere.

NHTSA #11520182

What component or system failed or malfunctioned: I was stopped at a red light for about 60 seconds, and the engine's Auto Start-Stop feature was engaged (engine automatically shut off while idling at the traffic light). As the light turned green, I took my foot off the brake, and the engine did not start again. The dash displayed multiple warning signs, such as "Engine Stopped - Press Brake Firmly to Restart" (I did so, and it did not restart), and "Power Steering Low." I ended up having to put the car in park, turn off the vehicle, then turn it on again to continue moving. This happened to my 2023 Corolla Cross XLE in wet weather (rain), while I had the windshield wipers on and QI charging port enabled. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk: I was stalled at a busy intersection for about 30-45 seconds, with cars behind me honking and attempting to drive around to pass me, putting both them and myself in danger. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center?: According to this Reddit post (https://www.reddit.com/r/CorollaCross/comments/t7rv4b/comment/jc2swum/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3), Toyota has confirmed there is an issue. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure?: No

Stopped at red light in the rain, windshield wipers and auto stop/start feature was active. Engine shuts off as normal, but did not restart when removing pressure from brakes as it should. Dash beeped and flashed "power steering low" engine light and power steering light come on. Steering wheel was very stiff, but I was able to coast through the light to the side of the road. I put the car in park and attempted a restart. I believe it was the second attempt before the car would restart.

Electrical System,Engine,Visibility/Wiper9 complaints

While driving in the rain with my windshield wipers on, my car suddenly stopped and the message on the car said “engine stopping, steering slowly” and after that it said “press on brakes slowly, engine stopping , steering slowly” and then it started to cut off. I forcibly put it in park and then the engine came back on and the car started to drive fine. An hour later, I turned my car back on and started driving and my screen went black. I turned the car off and turned it back on and it started working again. I think it could be an electrical issue but I don’t know for sure. I bought this car used with a little over 30k miles on it.

I was driving during the rain with the wipers on (intermittent) and the auto start/stop feature engaged. I got to a red light and stopped. I lifted my foot off the brake to press the accelerator and then the car didn't restart. The instrument panel then said low steering power and another message about the brake. A loud tone was continuously emitted. I pressed the brake and put the car in park and was able to restart it. I was scared because traffic behind me was honking for me to proceed and I was not able to at first.

NHTSA #11547505

I was driving in the pouring rain with intermittent wipers on in bumper to bumper traffic and stopped at a red light. Car shut off, with traffic behind me and I had to put hazard lights on. Dashboard messages appeared - Low steering power light and then said to press brake and auto start button. Luckily it restarted. Second time this has happened as I had 500 miles and thought I didn't know how to operate the car since it was new. This time 2,400 miles and there was no doubt the fear I experienced was an electrical issue. Drove to Northshore Toyota, who advised no codes were stored and couldn't duplicate the issue. I contacted Toyota Brand Engagement with case # [XXX] and [XXX]. Northshore Toyota contacted field technician and said to reprogram the main computer. They will do this today. If it doesn't fix the issue, after 3 times of the dealer trying to fix it, I can go to arbitration with Toyota. Car is at dealer so I do not have a document to upload.

When stopped at a red light, the car started beeping, the check engine light turned on, "steering power low" was displayed, the brake pedal could not be pushed in, and the steering wheel was locked. After putting the car into park and pressing the engine start/stop button, the beeping stopped and the car was able to drive again. The car had a full tank of gas and it was raining outside. Not only did this happen in the middle of a busy intersection, but while the weather conditions were difficult which could potentially put safety at risk.

For the 3rd time, my 2023 Corolla Cross LE has completely shut off when stopped at a light. Similarities across events include: > it has been raining, so windshield wipers are on > auto-stop/start has been initiated > no warning lights appear before this happens; it just shuts off and the screen says "Steering power low" This seems to be a documented occurrence, per this forum in which the same problem is detailed by numerous contributors: https://www.corollacrossforum.com/threads/vehicle-malfunction-at-start-stop.396/ The sudden shut-down of the vehicle is safety risk because, in a frantic state of mind, one could end up holding up traffic and generating more road rage, never mind the state of mind that I'm left in after this happens - totally anxious and frazzled! After the 2nd time this happened, the car was brought to the dealership where they kept the car overnight to try and recreate the problem. They didn't manage to (sunny days), but they communicated with Toyota about it. After this 3rd time of it happening today I am reaching out to the NHTSA.

NHTSA #11528299

When automatic start/stop is engaged and I am stopped at a light, the engine does not restart when I release the brake. There are audible and visible indicators of the problem on the dash, with "IGNITION ON" and "Engine Stopped Press Brake Firmly to Restart" displayed on the dash. I had to put the car into Park in order to manually restart the engine. The problem seems to happen on drizzly days when I use the wipers on various intermittent settings. This is a safety to my car and others because of the engine stopping. The vehicle has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center. I contacted multiple dealers, but was told that they would need to actually reproduce the problem to diagnose, making it difficult to schedule a service appointment due to the specific weather conditions required. The dealers told me that I would have to pay for the service appointments even though the problem occurred with less than 400 miles on the car, then again with less that 1,000 miles.

NHTSA #11524496

My vehicle stalled out 3 times in one day while stopped a t a traffic light. Windshield wipers were on (I do not recall what setting). First message displayed advised to press firmly on brake, which I did. Second message was "low power steering" and the engine shut off completely. I had to put in park, turn off, and restart. Thankfully it did without issue.

NHTSA #11519957

When the vehicle comes to a stop at a traffic light, engine turns off. It appears to occur when it is raining and the windshield wipers are on. After 1-3 minutes, receive error messages: Engine stopped. Power Steering Low. Push brake firmly to restart engine." Check Engline Light is on. Have to put car in park, turn off the ignition, wait a minute, and turn back on to go. Each time the windshield wipers were activated. I brought the vehicle to a Toyota service center but they were not able to reproduce the problem. This creates a safety problem for driver and everybody on the road.

I was at a red light with my windshield wipers on. I then heard several warning beeps with messages stating "steering power low", battery low, and then the steering locked. I tried to turn the wheel after the last message came up but the steering wheel was locked. I couldn’t accelerate. I had to park the car and turn it off and on again. This has happened twice now and Toyota says it is “fine”.

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated while the vehicle was idling at a traffic light, the vehicle stalled. The messages "Engine Shut Off" and "Steering Power Low" were displayed, and the check engine warning light and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that she turned off and restarted the vehicle, and the messages and warning lights were turned off. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the failure needed to be duplicated to diagnose the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 4,600.

I was in New York taking my boyfriend to work and was at a red light and out of nowhere the car started to beep and said the power steering was low and to press the brake to restart, nothing happened when I pressed the brake and then I received a message saying the engine turned off, the traffic light turned green and I had to put my car in neutral to park it and turn it off. I looked up what it could be for my car model and apparently A LOT of people are having this issue when the wipers are on and auto on/off is on as well which was my scenario this morning. This is a huge issue and needs to be addressed immediately by Toyota!!!

My engine has shut off 4 times while I am stopped at a red light. Every singe time I have taken it to the dealership for them to tell me they cant recreate the problem and that there are no codes showing up. I have taken videos and photos while the engine is shut off. The dealership did not seem to care. An engine shutting off in the middle of the drive is a serious safety concern and yet nothing is done to address this? The error message that keeps popping up is "Engine stopped, Steering power Low" and "Engine Stopped Press Brake Firmly to Restart" and if you press the break firmly it does not restart. You have to physically put the car on park, and press the start button to restart the engine. It seems to be a common problem when the windshield wipers are on, however, 3 out of 4 times the engine has stopped, my wipers were not on.

I was stopped at a light and even after putting the car in park I was unable to get the engine started again. Air Bags7 complaints

I noticed that the police report does not mention or investigate the issue of the car’s airbags. This was a major accident, and the vehicle was completely totaled—yet not a single airbag deployed. I would like to know what action your department can take to address the sale of such vehicles in our country, and who will be held responsible when airbags fail to operate in serious accidents. I have great respect for the police department—like the military, it is one of the most disciplined and critical services in our society. However, I kindly request that you report the issue of the non-functioning airbags to your supervisors or the concerned department, and, if possible, bring it to public attention or initiate corrective action with Toyota car suppliers. Thank you very much for your service and understanding.

On [XXX], at approximately [XXX], I was involved in a major collision in Northridge, California, while driving my 2023 Toyota [Model], VIN: [XXX] . While making a left turn from [XXX] to [XXX], my vehicle was struck on the driver’s side/front area. I was wearing my seatbelt. Despite the severity of the impact and heavy vehicle damage, the airbags failed to deploy. Component/System Failed: Airbag system (sensors and/or deployment mechanism). Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Safety Risk: My safety was compromised because the airbag system did not activate to protect me from the crash forces. This left my head, neck, and torso unprotected, increasing the risk of serious injury or death. Injuries Sustained: Lightheadedness, neck pain, middle back pain, and episodes of forgetting words when speaking. Currently being evaluated in the Emergency Department. Reproduction/Confirmation: The issue has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center. UNKNOWN if this is a recurring defect. Inspections: The vehicle has not yet been inspected by Toyota or a dealer. Police documented the incident, and insurance will inspect. The vehicle is available for manufacturer, NHTSA, or other inspections. Warnings/Prior Symptoms: No warning lamps, error messages, or prior symptoms before the failure. UNKNOWN if sensors or control module registered the crash but failed to deploy. Evidence: Videos and photos show this was a major crash with heavy damage, yet airbags did not deploy. I request a full investigation, disclosure of similar reports, and corrective action/recall if warranted. I was driving on I-290 toward Chicago when traffic began to slow. I also began slowing down when I was suddenly rear-ended by the vehicle behind me at a high speed. My car sustained significant rear-end damage, including a crushed bumper and a detached exhaust pipe that was dragging on the ground. The other vehicle involved was totaled. Police arrived on the scene and determined the other driver was at fault. While waiting for the tow truck, multiple tow personnel commented that, based on the severity and location of the impact, the airbags should have deployed — but they did not. I did not receive any warning lights, alerts, or messages before or after the impact. I did not hit my head, but it was a real possibility given the force of the crash, and I believe this created a serious safety risk. I purchased this vehicle in large part due to its reputation for safety, and in this situation, I felt unprotected. At this point, the vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or manufacturer, but the police and insurance companies have been involved. I am concerned that the failure of the airbag system to deploy represents a defect or malfunction in the safety system. I am willing to make the vehicle available for inspection if needed.

On July 12, 2023 Safety recall 23TA08 was issued and it stated that dealer cannot sell, offer for sale, or introduce or deliver for introduction in interstate commerce a new motor vehicle under Title 49, Section 30112 of the United States Code. But the next day on July 13, 2023 Larry H. Miller American Toyota in Albuquerque, NM sold the new car to me (agreement is attached) but didn't deliver it (didn't release it from the dealer's lot) and didn't tell me that the new recall was published the day before. I got the car on August 17, 2023 only. I expected that the car didn't have any safety issues, but several days later I found in my account at Toyota.com that the recall hadn't been closed for my car (health report is attached). The remedy was available in October 2023 but I hadn't got any notice from Toyota or the dealer, so my car was repaired on November 2, 2023 only (repair invoice from another Toyota dealer is attached).

I bought a 2023 Cross in good faith the end of March 2023. I needed it as a replacement car as mine had been totaled as I was hit head on Feb. 9,2020.Then the covid long months and years hit right after and then I could find no car. When I finally found one through a dealership then I got no 1 recall and later no2 recall.I have not been able to drive it much as safety issues and it has been sitting for weeks. First why was Toyota allowed to go through Takata for the parts when years ago they were in a prior recall with this manufacturer and Takata filed for bankruptcy then. Now this is the largest recall in this recall history and we, the customers of new cars, are in a mess. I bought an extended warranty which is no good since my car is sitting, they have the 2022 Cross SUV on this recall also-why was it not taken care of before we bought new 2023 vehicles??I waited years to replace my totaled car due to no cars (new) on lots and I had many injuries and the person who hit me had nothing to even pay off my bill for injuries-just a little insurance his mother had taken out.Had I known about the problem I would have found another new SUV.Why is there no one not allowing Toyota to use this manufacturer AGAIN so we do not have to go through all this. I have been through enough physically and still have medical problems and have to go to medical facilities 5-6 hours away for problems and planned on using my Cross and have 5 upcoming trips in the weeks ahead of me. I hope there can be some changes so this never happens again to new car buyers-it also has affected my car's value. I am so disappointed and mad in the whole situation. Thank you for your time. I have contacted the Toyota company several times over the internal multimedia system in the vehicle I purchased in October 2023. This system requires that I download a poorly developed application on my phone from Toyota in order to fully interact with the system. I will not put any app on my personal phone that is a potential security risk and is one of the poorest rated apps on the app store where it resides. Because I won't add this awful Toyota tracking device on my phone, I am required to interact with this panel to distraction while driving, which is causing safety issues. I would like to know how it is legal for a corporation like this to require that someone download an app with security risks on their phone, in order to use an interior car function, which can cause major safety issues because it is so distracting while driving.

Driving in Bumper-to-Bumper traffice on interstate 10. It was raining and the wipers were on. The problem occurred on December 20th during frequent starts and stops to maintain traffic flow with other vehicles. During one of the stops, the engine turned off as it normally does at a traffic light or when stuck in traffic. Upon lifting my foot off the brake, the car emiited loud sounds and various lights came on the dashboard. Cars behind me started honking their horns and other cars began acclerating passed me on the adjacent lanes. I was very upset and frightened. I tried several times to try and restart the car. I finally was able to get it started and drove directly to the dealer- Toyota of the Desert in Cathedral City. The Service writer said they could not find anything wrong with the car and would not give me a loaner. I am a health care provider and use my car to take my patients for doctor visits etc. She needs 24/7 coverage, so I asked her husband to pick me up at the dealer. He called the dealer and escalated the request for a loaner which was granted. The next day I asked him to return the loaner and pick up my car. He spoke with several people at the dealership including F&I, Service Director and Sales director and no one ever heard of this problem. He did some research and found that this problem has been reported many times. ie. Auto stop/start and many times with windshield wipers on causes car to unexpectantly stall. There are multiple reports listed under several categories on this database. This needs immediate attention before something terrible happens.

Dear NHTSA Representative: I bought a Toyota Cross LE 2023 in April of 2023. During the first few weeks of owning and using the vehicle, seat belt alarms got activated even though all passengers were wearing their respective seat belts. Also, open door alarms got activated randomly while all of them were properly closed. On the 27 of July 2023 at a stop light the vehicle turned off in accordance with the Auto Stop Programming feature, however once the brake pedal was released, the engine failed to start while faults appeared on the instrument cluster display. When the vehicle was taken to the Toyota dealer, the manufacturer representative did not recognize the situation as a technical problem. They just advised to turn off the Auto Stop Feature as a "remedy" on August 3, 2023. Service job orders were not given when repair was requested. On November 13, 2023 the vehicle failed to engage any gear once the shift lever was moved from P to D. Malfunction faults appeared on the instrument cluster display and the engine stalled. Once again the vehicle put us on a safety risk due to manufacturer defects. The vehicle was transported to the Toyota Dealer for repair. I am a resident of Puerto Rico and this car was bought to accommodate my mother's and my needs of transportation to fulfill personal and professional necessities. Even though monthly payments are made in compliance with the financial commitment, warranty services already paid in advance are not being delivered or fulfilled. As a result of this condition, I am not able to recognize the trustworthiness of the vehicle under Toyota Brand advertising in Spanish "Maneja Confiado". It is my request for NHTSA to evaluate my complaint and investigate this defect of intermittent nature that compromises the safe use of this car by my family among traffic with other drivers. I will be seeking to cancel this purchase agreement and no longer recognize Toyota as a dependable or reliable option for transportation.

I tried multiple times to press the brake for restarting but it didn't work. I had to put on my flashers for cars to go around me because I couldn't get the car to go. I finally put it in park and had to turn it completely off and on I believe twice before I finally got it started and could drive home.

The car has suddenly turn off while driving, all lights come one and does take a while to be able.to turn back on. It had happened 4 times already. Twice today while my daughter was driving on a busy street, nearly missing getting it by someone else. And the second time in the middle of an intersection today was a rainy day, and she had the automatic on/off button off. Twice before, on 2 separate days one was sunny, the day was sprinkling.

NHTSA #11541799

I was at a stop light with the car in drive and the wipers on intermittent. The auto on/off feature was also enabled since the car was stopped. There was a failure related to the auto on off that seems to correlate with the windshield wipers being used. The engine shut off and the error message appeared on the screen "engine stopped steering power low". The check engine and power steering lights came on. I couldn't move the car until I put it in park, shut the car off, and turned the car back on.

Steering,Engine,Visibility/Wiper3 complaints

When it is raining, wipers are on, and I stop at the traffic light, start/stop function turns on when I press the pedal all the way down, but when I release it to drive again, the engine won't start back and the message appears on screen "engine stopped, steering power low", which is scary because the cars at the back starts honking, then I turn the car into parking, switch the car off and turn it back on and then I can drive. Apparently, it is a know problem with this model but Toyota refuse the accept that they know about it and they do not have the solution. It has happened to me 5 times in 3 months, since I bought the car.

NHTSA #11548733

While it was raining, and I was at a stop light in the middle of traffic, my car stopped and made a loud warning sound and my dashboard lit up with warning signs about my engine and steering wheel. It stated "Engine Stopped, steering power low". I had to shift my car to park and turn my car off and on for it it start again. Its a brand new 2023 Corolla Cross and I've only had it for 3 months. This is very unsafe, multiple people have reported this issue. Something must be done to fix it.

At red lights, come to a complete stop with auto engine off feature enabled, as it is automatically enabled upon entering the vehicle. Engine shuts off per auto feature. After 1-3 minutes, receive error messages: Engine stopped. Power Steering Low. Push brake firmly to restart engine." Check Engline Light is on. Have to put car in park, turn off the ignition, wait a minute, and turn back on to go. Each time the windshield wipers were activated. Had the car less than 5 days, 220 miles on it. Safety of myself and others put at risk as I am not able to accelerate or move through a traffic light. To be assessed by dealer ASAP.

At a stop light the car shut down on me. Immediately on the the following message appeared on the warning panel indicator : “steering power low” then “ engine stopped “ and “ Press brake firmly to restart”. I followed the instructions but it didn’t work. I had to shift the car to park to be able to start the engine again. This happened on 4 occasions. In case this is relevant, it was raining heavily throughout the entire day.

Twice while I was on a roadtrip this past weekend when I was stopped, I got an error that said "Steering Power Low." The first time I was in bumper to bumper traffic in the Bronx. My phone was plugged into the vehicle to use Android Car Play. It was drizzling off and on, so my wipers may have been on, but if so, they were on intermittent. To my recollection, I was not using other electronic components at that time. The second time I was at a stop light. It was a long light, but not unreasonably so. It was raining, so my headlights and windshield wipers were on. I was using Android Car play via bluetooth connection. Both times I had to put the car into neutral and restart it. The automatic start/stop feature was on both times because I have not figured out a way to permanently turn it off.

It was the first day driving my brand new 2023 Corolla Cross XLE AWD to work in downtown Washington, DC. I pulled up to stoplight and the auto start/stop turned off the engine like normal. After about 20 seconds at the stoplight, the car started one long beep that wouldn’t shut off and my dashboard screen said “engine stopped, press brake firmly to restart" and "low power steering.” The check engine light was also illuminated. I pressed the brake firmly but the car did not restart. I was blocking downtown traffic and tried to turn the wheel to move closer to the curb, but the steering wheel would not turn. I tried to push the on/off switch with no result. I then shifted it into park and pushed the button to turn off the engine. I pushed it again immediately but the car did not restart. I waited a few seconds and pushed it again and the car started. I am reading online in a Corolla Cross Forum that it seems to be a problem when the windshield wipers are on. Interestingly, it had just begun to rain that morning and I had turned on the wipers. Since then I have turned off the auto stop/start feature each time I start the car. It is currently with the dealership so they can try to figure out the problem.

Nothing has happened yet but I feel that the wipers on this vehicle, in high speed, are not adequate to clear the windshield in a heavy rain. I have great anxiety driving in heavy rain since purchasing this vehicle. I would like this to be noted in case others complain and hopefully it can lead to a solution. I just purchased this vehicle and now am stuck with a vehicle that can't provide basic safety.

The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated that while driving 68 MPH, there was an abnormal sound like a gunshot coming from the sunroof. The contact stated there was a huge hole formed in the middle of the sunroof, and air was rushing into the vehicle. The contact discovered a large piece of glass behind her right ear; however, the contact was not injured because of the failure. The contact pulled over at the next rest stop and cleaned out the vehicle. Upon inspecting the glass, the contact discovered several hairline fractures and cracks around the edges of the glass. The contact believed that the failure was caused by excessive pressure and stress placed on the vehicle after extensive hours of driving. The contact stated that while driving for an extensive period at high rates of speed, the contact had to clear her ear passages because her ears were frequently filled with air. The contact notified the dealer and an independent mechanic about the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.

It was raining. The adaptive cruise control was engaged. The system did not sense the car in front and keeps moving at set speed. It happen at least three times during the trip. I have to disengage the cruise control or hit the brake to keep the car from hitting the car in front. I looked at the in car cruise control monitor. It did not detected any car in front. Even thought there was a car in front. In my previous car with adaptive cruise control. If weather was preventing the safety system from operating normally. A warning would pop up and disengage the adaptive cruise control. No such warning with the Corolla. The adaptive cruise control seems to be operating normally once the rain has lighten up.

Exploding Sunroof Issue: I was driving to work in my 2023 Toyota Cross on [XXX] at approximately [XXX] and I was traveling approximately 25 miles per hour when I heard what sounded like grinding glass and then wind noise quickly started coming in, although at the time I didn't know where it was coming from so I looked around to see if the windows were all rolled up. I slid the cover of the sunroof partially back and glass rained down and at that time I realized the sunroof exploded. I took photos and a video of the sun roof and it looked like it blew outward. Nothing struck the sunroof and it seemed to have just spontaneously blew up and outward. I had only 2,950 miles on my car and I assumed it was a defect in glass or installation so my husband took it to the Toyota dealership service center in Carlsbad Ca where we purchased the car and they informed him it was not covered under warranty. They gave him an 800 number to call to find out why the warranty was denied and when he called they told them they would get back to him and that they would not put the denial in any written form as he requested. As of today March 17th, no one has called back so now we start the difficult process of trying to get answers from Toyota. Since we needed the car back and couldn't wait from Toyota's response, we were forced to turn it in to the insurance company and pay the deductible. After doing some research, I'm finding out exploding sunroofs is a known issue on Toyotas. I believe this is an extreme safety hazard and am surprised the company was quick to deny it as a warranty issue. the incident has occurred three times since i have had the vehicle, two were at low speed and one was at moderate speed, the brakes initially start to work but in the final stage of braking the brake pedal gets very hard and the brakes seem not to be working for about 1-2 seconds, my natural reaction has been to hit the pedal several times and finally it ends up working. i took the vehicle to the toyota service center and they told me that the brake pads are perfect, when evidently it is not a failure of the break pads, i am not a mechanic but it is evident that the breaks pads are not the problem. Luckyly I didn't have cars in front, 2 stops sign and 1 was a yield sign. Not lights or alerts in the car dashboard.

The vehicle stalls or shutdown while my foot is on brake or waiting at a red light.Unexpectedly and randomly. On rainy weather days it is more extreme.Sometimes your foot doesn’t have to be on the brake for it to happen. But when if you’re slowing down, before you brake, it will stall. A message will come on the dashboard about a system not being available. Vehicles will nearly rear end me sometimes because the vehicle is stuck. I would have to shut the vehicle off and restart it. Sometimes it is not fast enough to start. I address this issue to the dealership in the past and brought it in for a repair. They said they found No problem with the vehicle. I was never given paperwork for that repair like I usually receive when I check the vehicle for other issues. Most of my complaints were verbally on the phone. I gave up pressing the issue due to multiple reasons which included financial issues. This year I informed NJ Consumer Affairs and the dealership to help me with the ongoing issue.

I have run into issues with the auto start/stop or brake hold being on while the windshield wipers are on. I get a "steering fluid low" message that comes up on the dashboard and the car becomes inoperable. I have to turn the car off and turn it back on in order to drive it again. This has been going on since I purchased the car in March 2023. I have not gone to a dealer around this issue as I've heard from other Toyota Corolla Cross owners have run into the same issue and that there is no remedy for the issue. There is no warning that this will happen, it happens unexpectedly and typically I'm sitting at stop signs or red lights.

I was at a red light on a busy highway. All of a sudden my car stopped working: I got a message on the dashboard along the lines of "engine power low" and "press brake hard to restart". But even if I pressed the brake hard, nothing would happen, and my car wouldn't move forward. In fact, because I was on a slight uphill, releasing the brake pedal made my car go backwards. The steering wheel also felt locked. I was panicked because the light turned green and a lot of cars were waiting behind me. I put my hazard lights on, and kept trying to press the brake hard to no avail. Finally after about a minute, I put my car in park, and turned off my car. I then restarted it, and it suddenly worked. This was a super scary experience, and very disappointing since my car is new as of two months ago.

I was driving my NEW 2023 corolla cross home on the side of the toll road (busy road). I stopped at a red light and pressed the brake down for the stop engine. When the light turned green and I let my foot off the brake warning lights went off saying “low steering power” the wheel locked and my car would not go. Kept saying “press brake firmly to restart” which I did several times and nothing happened. Finally I put the car in park and pressed the break with the start button a few times and it turned back on so I could drive away. However, I was stuck in the middle lane on road with a high speed limit between 50-60. I put my hazards on and cars were good about going around but it was very scary. Then the same thing happened when I was in the middle yield section trying to cross a very busy highway. I dont think the stop engine initiated and the car still locked up. This is a huge safety issue.

Just a couple weeks ago, my 16 year old daughter was driving our NEW 2023 Corolla Cross when she came to a busy intersection and had to stop for the red light. She reduced her speed to make the complete stop and WITHOUT engaging the ECO system (Stop/Start feature using the brake) the vehicle completely shut down and locked up on her with the "Power Steering Low" warning as well as some description about the brake. She asked what happened and what should she do. I turned the Hazard lights on and I asked her if she had tried to engage the ECO system Start/Stop and she said no. I told her to see if she could engage the Stop/Start by firmly pressing on the brake, she could not. I told her to put the car in park and again try to engage the ECO system, she could not. I told her to turn the vehicle off while in park and then restart the car. When she turned the car back on the warning cleared and she could drive the vehicle a few blocks to work. It was raining, not heavily, and we had the windshield wipers on. The "Power Steering Low" showed another time when I had the car idling in the parking lot with the wipers going waiting for my son after his game. I had to turn the car off. Numerous occasions the "Battery Charging" warning will appear when I have tried to engage the ECO system Stop/Start. One day I could not get the ECO system to engage no matter what I did, NO additional accessories were on. Same as the Power Steering Low issue unknown but, my daughter has experienced the wheel firmly locking up where she cannot control the wheel while centered in the lane. The lane assist seems to engage aggressively when not needed creating a temporary situation where the drive cannot control the wheel. My dealer has had the car 8 days without being able to replicate any error and unfortunately there SUBSTANTIAL DEFECTS DO NOT log in the cars history. Most concerning is the lack of logged warnings which the dealer says they can't diagnose the issue. Huge safety concern!!

Vehicle displayed a “power brake loss” on the 2023 Corolla Cross Hybrid instrument cluster upon trying to start it. After not being able to turn the vehicle on, I exited the vehicle to ensure my key fob was in my pocket. All electronics worked. After roughly 4 minutes of being in the car all power was loss - battery drained. Towing company that my Toyota Dealership Provides had a number out of service so a different towing service came out and jumped my car - my warranty couldn’t be used since the towing company didn’t answer. The towing technician let me know that Toyota put in an extremely low voltage battery in my Hybrid. He expressed how the standard for these vehicles is AGM or high performance batteries to ensure stable voltage for hybrid management, and compatibility with regenerative systems - using the right part prevents electrical issues. My brakes are connected to my electrical system. By putting in weak batteries and below standard expectation is putting their consumers at many risks with electrical malfunctions. I was informed by the dealer after getting it replaced this is the Toyota Manufacturer issue and I had a technician even agree the weak batteries will only help in getting consumers back to a dealer quicker.

While driving at a moderate speed (june 7, 2025), multiple critical systems of the vehicle suddenly failed. Both dashboard screens (driver and center display) went black, and numerous warning lights appeared afterward, including oil pressure, engine, lane departure, tire pressure, and airbag (SRS) system malfunction. The vehicle accelerated involuntarily, the brakes did not respond, the steering became stiff, and the airbags failed to deploy upon impact with concrete and metal highway barriers. A "System Malfunction" and "SRS Airbag System Malfunction" message appeared. The police report attributes the crash to a vehicle system malfunction. Two days before the incident (June 5, 2025), the vehicle had been serviced by the dealer, and the electronic screen issue had been reported but not addressed. This failure put our lives at serious risk and demonstrates a catastrophic malfunction across safety-critical systems. Exiting freeway and decelerating from 65mph speed to come to a stop, the exit veers the to left and slightly uphill. At around the speed of 35 mph the car brake began to actually give resistance and I could feel it actually start applying pressure back onto my foot as if deliberately trying to accelerate. Was unable to get brake to go push down even with applying more force than usual. Very high risk situation with stationary cars and an intersection nearing. Picked up my foot a slammed my brake as hard as possible. The break did finally push through with great force, however mechanical noises from the engine also occurred while breaking hard (honestly thought my transmission was falling out based on the noise) . I almost collided with the car in front of me due to my delayed stop and was at risk of being rear ended due to having a car also immediately behind me that did not appear to anticipate my abrupt stop. I was so shaken by the incident I called my partner immediately because I felt the vehicle was unsafe to drive. I have called the dealership and reported the incident. They asked to bring my car in for evaluation and let me know there is a recall they will assess for. Vehicle Speed Control,Service Brakes1 complaint

I slowed down to turn into my daughter's driveway and park in front of their boat (maybe 5 mph if that). Suddenly, the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed on its own. I hit the brakes with no response. I had to veer to the left of the driveway onto the grass to avoid hitting the boat and garage. The car continued to accelerate (approximately 60-70+ mph) as I tried pumping the break pedal several times with no response (went to floor board with no resistance). I had to maneuver a narrow area at a high rate of speed to avoid hitting the house to my right and trees to my left. As I came down the hill, I approached a large embankment of a knocked over tree, dirt and brush pile. I knew I had to do something or it would be a serious impact. I quickly swerved to my right. I didn't know there was a ditch to the right of this embankment, but thankfully it brought my vehicle to a stop as my front left tire became flat and stuck in the dirt This was very shocking and traumatizing. We verified there was nothing on the floor that would have caused the gas to be accelerated. My car is currently on 3 wheels where it stopped (1 wheel suspended in the air). I received medical care at the ER for back pain. A CT scan showed I had a T12 Vertebrae compression fracture. I was prescribed a back brace, pain medication and an anti-inflammatory. I have also been alternating with a heat pad and ice pack, plus using a cane to help me get around. I will be contacting Toyota as well for an investigation into the problem, but I am scared to drive this vehicle again if if they do check it over. A police report was started on 14 Jul with the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, Oxford, MS, but it hasn't been completed. The report number is 24-003363. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Vehicle horn. It does not sound loud enough to be heard under all conditions by other drivers or pedestrians. Similar vehicles come with two horns: one high frequency and one low frequency. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The described condition certainly can put at risk the driver safety or others. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? The problem was reported to the Toyota Dealership. They said that they tested the horn sound, was compared to a known good model, and did not find a difference in the sound intensity or pitch. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes, the dealer said that it tested the horn sound and compared it to a known good model. Were th. any warning lamps, mess. or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes. When I first took delivery of the vehicle, the horn sounded louder. Steering,Engine,Fuel/Propulsion System1 complaint

In November, the engine stalled at a light when it was raining and the wipers were on. Warning noises were activated and the console read "steering Power Low." The car had to be pushed out of the intersection by other drivers. After a half hour the car was able to be restarted . The Car taken to dealership and they ran diagnostics on it and declared that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. Yet on December 27th, it happened again. This time my daughter was driving the vehicle. It was raining, the lights and wipers were on and we stopped at a light. The engine shut off and would not restart. She pressed the brake multiple times and put the car in park. After about 5 minutes of sheer terror, she was able to restart the car.

Exterior Lighting,Visibility/Wiper1 complaint

When driving at night the illumination from the headlights is very poor. I can only see about 1/3 of the way up on the windshield and only a short distance in front of the car. Everything else is black. I am leasing the car for three years but I can't drive it at night it's too dangerous. Even if I use highbeams it is difficult to see. Both of my adult children have driven the car and come to the same conclusion. I brought it back to the dealership and they said the lights were adjusted properly to pass inspection. The only solution they had for me was to find someone to put in different bulps. They said they could not do it and if I did not buy it at the end I'd have to put the old bulbs back in. I have seen several other people on the internet that have exactly the same problem.

Steering,Lane Departure1 complaint

This is a recurring problem since buying the vehicle new... now at ~7,500 miles. Problem occurs on state highways (North Carolina country roads). While Lane Tracing Assist is active at 45 mph - 60 mph, the Lane Tracing Assist works fine and as expected on large radius state highway curves, but when it comes to smaller radius curves, the Lane Tracing Assist takes the turn in an overly aggressive manner. It wants to cross the median on curves to the left, and it wants to run off the road on curves to the right. The lane departure warning sounds in both instances, so the car recognizes it is departing the lane. I am able to maintain control to keep the car generally in its lane, but I have to actively and physically fight the steering system to do so.

Electrical System,Vehicle Speed Control,Engine1 complaint

I ordered the car in July and it arrived on 8/3/23. On 8/31/23, I got in the car while in my garage, attempted to start it as usual, and a loud sound occurred when I shifted from park to reverse. Lights began flashing. I turned off the car, got out and walked around to make sure I hadn’t hit anything. After verifying clearance all around, I checked my phone. The Toyota Corolla Cross XLE had 4 codes listed: malfunctions of: electronic control of engine, AWD system, drive-start control system, and the advanced ultrasonic detecting and ranging system. I restarted the car and backed out of my garage. The check engine light was still on. I backed out and tried to drive down my neighborhood street. When I steeped in the accelerator, the engine would race but not engage. Acceleration was problematic so I returned home. Later the same day, I had it towed into a local Toyota service center. After several days, they said it was “just a glitch”. They reset it and have not been able to get the codes to recur.

Fuel/Propulsion System1 complaint

Purchased car in March 2023. August 2023, rainy day. Engine shut off when at light and foot on brake. Warning signals of "engine stopped, press brake firmly to restart,’ and ‘low power steering’.” displayed. Had to put car in park to restart. Took to Toyota dealership where purchased, they couldn't recreate. Happened again later that evening. Took pics of dash and took into dealership next day. They had it for almost 3 months. Said it was the second starter. Drove fine for about 3 months and then happened again on 3/8. Took in again and they could not recreate. Not safe to drive as it happens in heavy traffic somethimes.

Steering,Electrical System,Visibility/Wiper1 complaint

It was a rainy day, the first rainy day that I drove this car in. I had my windshield wipers and headlights on, and I've always kept my auto start/stop setting on for this car. At one point within 5 minutes of my destination, I pulled up to a left turn lane at an intersection. I slowed to a stop, with my auto stop engaging (as intended). At this moment, my engine stalled, my turn lights on my dashboard shone orange nonstop, and a constant beeping sound started. On the dashboard in front of me, following message was displayed: Press brake firmly to restart engine, Low steering power. I attempted to follow the instructions and pressed the brake as firmly as I could, but the warning and long beep continued and the car would not budge. It was getting dangerous because I was in the middle of a lane and blocking traffic. After a few attempts to follow the directions, I resorted to putting the car in park and manually completely shutting off the engine, then manually starting the engine. This worked and I was able to continue driving. Though this same situation happened again the same night in the same conditions: rainy, auto stopped in a left turn lane, windshield wipers on.

Air Bags,Unknown Or Other1 complaint

I bought this vehicle 3 months prior to your letter that reached me mid July 2023 about a safety recall due to it being a safety issue and telling me to NOT let anyone sit in the passenger seat due to major safety concerns with the airbag. Being a couple of months old 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross and that it had taken me 3 years to find a vehicle to purchase (with Covid and no cars on any lots) I complied and put the vehicle in my garage awaiting more info to come. This left me carless but at least I was safe. In a bit the dealer called and said they had the necessary parts to replace. They did supposedly fix 1 although dealing with Takata I have no 100% assurance the parts or fixing was done correctly. Then shortly another letter came saying the driver's side also was affected and TO NOT DRIVE IT FOR SAFETY REASONS AGAIN!!I had to have surgery at Mayo Clinic and had to keep my appts and trips back and forth at my expense!! I had to rent a car for 4 days for this trip. The dealer also confirmed the problems with the car. I also know of the same problems in 2015 and much the same scene with Takata and faulty parts and a billion penalty they acquired. When filling this out it was stated under my VIN no."unrepaired recall info was not found for this VIN. Why am I getting letters from the manufacturer and they state the driver's side is unsafe and defects in the airbag(s) inflators have risks of deaths and injuries when deployed.Deployed chemicals used to inflate the airbag use an ammonium nitrate based propellent without a drying agent in their metal cartridge."PLEASE ADVISE NOW AS THIS DRIVER SIDE HAS NEVER BEEN FIXED." The dealer is the only place that inspected the one side-passenger-as no fix or parts-exist for driver's side now AND I AM MOST UNHAPPY THAT IT IS NOT STATED ON MY ACCOUNT THAT IT NEEDS MORE WORK AND TO NOT DRIVE IT.I do not recall any light or messages showing but then again I have only driven my BRAND NEW SUV a few times and then it has been garaged.

Electrical System,Engine,Back Over Prevention1 complaint

My partner was driving in stop and go traffic. One of her stops the engine just shut down. She needed to restart. The most recent issue is the rear sensor. It shows it is blocked. When I checked the back bumper the round spot, where I guess the sensor is, was pushed in. I then checked the front bumper, one of those circular spots appear close to being detached. Another issue, the phone charger located in front of the gear handle never worked. I am going to the dealership today. The vehicle was purchased January 2023 and has about 2500 miles on it.

Electrical System,Unknown Or Other,Service Brakes1 complaint

Purchased a Toyota Corolla Cross 2023 on April 14th. Was very excited until I began noticing when the “Automated Start Stop” system began to engage at times, when I had the system supposedly off. I took it to the dealership where they tried to reenact the problem and nothing happened, they assumed it was user error. On April 21st I had driven the car for approximately 40 minutes and it was raining very hard. I had the windshield wipers running, the radio was on and when I came to the stop sign, I engaged the break (the Automated Start Stop system was on) the car totally shut down with all its bells and whistles flashing telling me the engine was off, it needed fluid, etc. I was in quite a panic mode due to the weather conditions, and worried that someone was going to hit me from behind. After composing myself, I put the car in park and restarted the car. When I was safe to pull over I disengaged the Automatic Start Stop system. I was able to make it home. On April 22nd I took the car out to try to reenact the situation and after driving a short time, the car once again, shut down. This is very very dangerous. I now have disengaged the Automatic Start System in hopes that it will not shut down until I can return this lemon to the dealership.

Other1 complaint

When the vehicle comes to a stop, sometimes the engine will shut off and the check engine light comes on. It appears to occur when it is raining and the windshield wipers are on. We brought the vehicle to a Toyota service center but they were not able to help. This creates a safety problem if the vehicle dies on the road.
