Below are recalls and complaints reported to NHTSA for the 2019 Toyota C Hr. This information is consumer-reported and provided for general informational purposes only. Vehicles like this may qualify under California lemon law depending on their individual repair history.
The following recalls were reported to NHTSA. A recall does not by itself establish that any individual vehicle is defective.
Gulf States Toyota (GST) is recalling certain 2019 C-HR, 4Runner, Avalon, Avalon Hybrid, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, Land Cruiser, Prius, RAV4, Sequoia, Tacoma, Sienna, Tundra and Yaris vehicles. The text on the load capacity label may become illegible. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
Reported consequence: If the driver cannot read the label, they may unknowingly overload the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: GST will notify owners, and dealers will provide corrected load carrying capacity modification labels, free of charge. The recall began May 24, 2019. Owners may contact GST customer service at 1-800-444-1074. GST's number for this recall is 19R1.
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2019 Toyota C-HR vehicles. The rear axle hub bearing bolts may have been insufficiently tightened, causing the bolts to loosen and damage the rear brake components or cause a rear wheel to detach.
Reported consequence: If the bolts loosen and damage the rear brake components, or cause a rear wheel to detach, it would increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear axle hub bearing bolts. If a bolt is found to be loose or detached, the dealer will replace the rear axle hub bearing assembly and rear axle carrier sub-assembly, free of charge. The recall began November 6, 2018. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is J0Y.
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2019-2020 C-HR and 2020 Corolla and Corolla Hybrid vehicles equipped with rear seat belt assemblies with a dual-mode locking mechanism. The seat belt webbing sensor locking mechanism may not lock as intended.
Reported consequence: In the event of a crash involving multiple impacts, the seat belt may not properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear seat belt assembly production dates, and replace the assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began February 7, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 19TB22 and 19TA22.
The following are consumer-reported complaints filed with NHTSA. These are unverified allegations and are not proof that any defect exists.
The vehicle experienced a sudden and catastrophic internal failure of its Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) at 139,000 miles. While driving, a heavy grinding noise began coming from the vehicle during acceleration. A certified technician at a Toyota dealership inspected the vehicle and officially diagnosed it with an internal center differential grind and noted that the transmission fluid was burnt and filled with metal flakes. The dealership stated the entire transmission must be replaced at a cost of over $10,000. Toyota explicitly markets and describes this CVT transmission fluid as 'lifetime' fluid with no standard required maintenance, leading consumers to believe the unit is sealed and durable. However, this internal bearing/differential disintegration is a known material manufacturing defect affecting 2018-2022 Toyota C-HR models. This is a severe safety hazard as a sudden internal transmission failure can cause an immediate loss of vehicle propulsion while driving at high speeds in traffic, increasing the risk of a crash. This should not be happening at all at this mileage
NHTSA #11743556
The vehicle's CVT transmission has failed, confirmed by Dublin Toyota (Dublin, CA) on June 9, 2026. The dealership has quoted $12,477 to replace the transmission, bringing the total repair estimate to over $15,000 — exceeding the vehicle's current market value. The dealership documented the following diagnostic trouble codes: P075B, P0741, and P2757. These codes are listed together in Toyota's own C-HR service manual as indicators of Torque Converter Clutch Circuit failure within the CVT system, confirming internal mechanical failure of the transmission. These are not minor or maintenance-related codes — they indicate a fundamental failure of the CVT's internal components. This is a known, widespread defect affecting 2018–2020 Toyota C-HR vehicles. Hundreds of owners have reported identical CVT bearing failures, often with no warning lights or prior symptoms, at mileages ranging from 38,000 to 140,000 miles. Toyota has acknowledged CVT issues on this model previously — issuing a software service campaign (Special Service Campaign J0D) for CVT programming defects — yet has refused to issue a recall or extended warranty for the underlying mechanical bearing failures now presenting across the fleet. Notably, Toyota Canada has extended warranty coverage for identical CVT failures on the same model years, while Toyota USA has declined to offer comparable relief to American owners facing the same defect. This defect represents a significant safety hazard, as CVT failure can result in sudden loss of propulsion while driving at highway speeds. Requested Action: Formal NHTSA investigation into CVT transmission bearing failures in 2018–2020 Toyota C-HR vehicles, and consideration of a recall or extended warranty campaign consistent with what Toyota Canada has already provided.

Transmission Failure
NHTSA #11741886
No warnings lights given. My car has been serviced three times in the past year of owning it. Yesterday I was informed my entire transmission needs to be replaced as it failed its inspection. My car was last seen by Toyota in September and I paid a little under 2k each visit to keep my car running perfectly. This visit I was quoted over 9k to replace the transmission. I have never had preexisting issues with it. This CVT transmission is known to fail prematurely and there needs to be a recall and compensation made for those who have faced the same issues. My car is only at 125k miles and I have spent about 20k purchasing and servicing this vehicle in the last year alone. I travel out of state frequently with my children to visit my relative who is in active chemotherapy. If my transmission were to die in the middle of Donners Pass I would be left stranded with my two young children. This is my daily driver and I can’t imagine what would happen if my car completely shut down in the middle of traffic or out of state as I was given certainty that my car ran perfectly until this just recently happened. I no longer have an operable vehicle regardless of the care and money put into it unless I spent another 10k on full transmission replacement.

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota C-HR. The contact stated that while driving at faster speeds, the vehicle hesitated while accelerating, with an abnormal sound coming from underneath the vehicle. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with transmission failure. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 87,000.
NHTSA #11734547
The contact owns a 2019 Toyota C-HR. The contact stated that while driving at 40 MPH, there was an abnormal grinding sound coming from the vehicle. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who determined that the failure was associated with the transmission. The contact was informed that the transmission might lock and that the vehicle was not safe to drive. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 130,001.
NHTSA #11733318
The component or system failed is the CVT transmission. The safety of the vehicle is very risky because when you drive it; it gets ready to cut off. The transmission has been confirmed that it is the problem by the independent service center. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by a transmission company. There were no warning signs or symptoms of the problem.
NHTSA #11740258
While traveling South on [XXX] toward [XXX] , the vehicle suffered a sudden and catastrophic internal failure of the CVT transmission. This resulted in an immediate and dangerous loss of motive power while in motion on a busy roadway. My husband (who was driving at the time) was forced to manually push the vehicle off the road with the assistance of a police officer to avoid a collision. A subsequent diagnosis at a local shop (Hot Rod Scott's LLC) who removed the transmission fluid in order to refill it and found the transmission had fallen apart. He did not return the old fluid and returned the plate of the transmission with all the pieces in the bottom and an authorized Toyota dealership in Chippewa Falls confirmed the transmission failed internally. This is a widely documented manufacturing defect in 2018–2022 C-HR models (K114 CVT). Toyota has acknowledged a bearing defect in other markets, such as Canada, by extending the warranty to 10 years/193,000 km, yet US consumers are being denied similar protection for the same defective part. This failure presents an unreasonable safety risk due to the unpredictable loss of propulsion in traffic. I am requesting a formal investigation into this systemic defect. CVT transmission bearing noise
NHTSA #11719281
Car started making high pitch noise when moving, it is the CVT transmission failing at 125k miles. Toyota describe the CVT fluid as lifetime and no recommended maintenance required.
NHTSA #11718396
Noticed a humming noise and took my vehicle in to Toyota lacrosse. They told me the transmission needs to be replaced at a cost of 10,000 dollars . No warning lights . No current safety issues .
NHTSA #11722275
The transmission went out of my 2019 Toyota CHR due to bearing failure
NHTSA #11711451
The contact owns a 2019 Toyota C-HR. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed, and there was an abnormal sound coming from the transmission. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed, and it was determined that the bearings were damaged and that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The dealer advised the contact to stop driving the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the residence and had not been driven since. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
NHTSA #11723099
A victim of the fault cvt transmissions. Known and recorded faulty transmissions but into these models and these year Toyotas. Dealership wants $12000 to change whole trans with no support.
NHTSA #11717645
I've completed all factory recommended changes/flushes, but at 140k miles, my transmission is failing. No indicator lights or signs have indicated an issue, but a transmission sound was the only indicator that something is wrong. The transmission issue was confirmed by an independent service center. This is a well known issue for the 2019 Toyota CHRs, but there is no recall for this. This car should have many more miles to go, but it's failing because of a known faulty build. Toyota has fixed the transmission issue in later models of the engine, but refuse to be held accountable for this failure.
NHTSA #11708324
At 125,000 miles it has been discovered that my CVT transmission is failing due to a transmission bearing issue. Quoted repair cost for $14,000 despite CVT transmission failure is common on my model. Toyota has only offered extended warranties to Canadian residence $14,000 is something I don’t have and face repossession for the failed transmission.
NHTSA #11706398
Transmission CVT failure of the 2019 Toyota CHR at 107,000 miles, was not inspected until there was an undeniable sound coming from the transmission and specific request was made for the source of the sound. There were no dashboard lights or warnings prior or even now that I’ve been told the transmission needs replaced and is in failure. Transmission failure has been inspected and confirmed by Toyota Dealership. As a consumer I was not forewarned transmission will require specialty maintenance in order to keep the vehicle in service especially at just 100k miles, no formal requirements were ever made concerning the transmission to maintain the functionality of this particular vehicle. The sound began emitting from the transmission about 2 to 3 weeks prior and due to the government shutdown as a federal employee I took my car to get serviced for the issue when it was feasible to do so. There is a Toyota CHR forum and multiple media outlets discussing the faulty CVT transmissions in the Toyota CHR costing upwards of 9000 -14000 in replacement with no warnings but solely based on driver intellect that something is functionally wrong with the vehicle. In my observations and experience the transmission issue simply equates to replacement rather than a repair issue.

Rubbing, grinding sound coming from Transmission
NHTSA #11710389
Car was under warranty until 100k miles. At 110k miles, transmission blew up. $12k minimum to replace, even with a used transmission. This needs to be a country-wide notification and Toyota needs to be held accountable. My transmission blew up at a stop light. If this had been on a major highway, the driver, passenger and outside drivers could have been seriously injured. Toyota should be replacing these free of charge and providing rentals. Canada already has a program in place to resolve this safety issue. Why don’t we have this in the states?
NHTSA #11698489
Transmission is failing at 101,000 miles. Toyota will do nothing, they quoted me at $10,600 to replace it. This is an ongoing issue with all the CHR’s and as of September 25th they have extended the warranties in Canada due to all the transmission failures. On the APA website for Canada they are reporting that they have a defective bearing inside the transmission that fails over time. The APA also recorded over 60 reports of CVT transmission failures on the Toyota C-HR. The majority of complaints cluster in the 2018-2019 model years, but a significant number of failures affect 2020 models. The average mileage at the time a failure was reported is just 118,000 km.
NHTSA #11693551
The car started making weird noises and shaking. Took it to the dealership and the car has a bearing that’s bad on the Transmission. It is a known problem according to the technician who took a look at it. Multiple cars during the 2017-2019 che cars all have the same issues.
NHTSA #11697724
My 2019 Toyota CH-R started making a whoop whoop sound while in gear. i took it to the dealership about a week after the noise started, and they stated my transmission was "broken/breaking. It only has 107,000 miles on it. I am looking online, and this is a common problem with the K114 transmission.
NHTSA #11683326
I noticed the transmission was making a whirring noise, took it into the dealership and they gave me an estimate for a new transmission for $13k.
NHTSA #11679448
Vehicle had just over 100k miles on it and a grinding sound started in the front right side of the vehicle. After driving for another month the sound had become louder and a rattling could be heard under the car. Took the car to the dealer and they wanted $15,000 to replace the transmission. The CVT type transmission used on this vehicle and the 2018 model have had repeated reports of failure at as low as 20k miles.
NHTSA #11673069
Transmission issues with this vehicle. The mechanic is quoting $10,000 for repair.
NHTSA #11671748
Transmission system failing. Car is available for inspection. Daily commute to work in busy traffic, whining noise getting worse, car can breakdown and cause an accident. Confirmed by an independent service center and called 3 other independent service centers and no mechanic will touch the job. Said faulty transmission already. Inspected by service mechanic. Absolutely no Warning lights showing up on the car dashboard screen of the issue! Paperwork available upon request. Thank you

Transmission failure at ~100K Miles
NHTSA #11663262
My car started making a loud whinning noise and I took it into the mechanic and they told me that my transmission is out. However Ive only had this car since January 2022. I have kept up with the oil changes and I've been told that Toyotas are great cars and I would have never imagined that I would have this issue. The transmission repairs can cost up to 6000-7000 in repairs and Im upside down on my loan because Ive used it as a work car and put a lot of miles on it. So I can't even trade it in. I also went past the 60/60000 mile warranty, which doesn't make any sense to me why I would have to pay out of pocket for repairs. Ive read several complaints about other people having the same issue with the car and Ive also researched information about the Toyota C-HR and they stopped making them in the USA due the so many issues and complaints. I hope that there is a way I can fix my car since I have no choice but to keep it. I hope that this doesn't happen to anyone else because this has affected my life in a very negative way. I can't even travel for my job now which has cost me to lose so much money. That's why I still haven't been able to get my car fixed.

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota C-HR. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was a squeaking sound coming from the rear suspension of the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V710000 (Power Train); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for an oil change. The contact made the dealer aware of the failure and the recall. The dealer confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 72,000.

Whining noise, i took the car to dealer and they said i have replace my transmission 12,000$
NHTSA #11651751
2019 Toyota CHR was inspected on 03/26/2025 at the dealership it was originally purchased at and was determined to have a failed CVT transmission at around 77,000 miles. Due to the cost of a total transmission replacement, the extended warranty agency Assurant, sent a third party inspector to the dealership 48 hours later to independently inspect and they came to the same determination. Warning Signs: The only warning sign was a whining noise from the car that only happened as speeds increased to 30+ mph. There were no other warning signs, symptoms or lamps/lights indicating there was a transmission failure. Safety: This puts the safety of myself and other's at risk because if the transmission would have failed while I was driving, I would have lost the ability to drive my vehicle, potentially in the middle of high traffic, putting myself and other's at risk of crash and/or injury. Additionally, a basic search of the internet can tell you that the general public and presumably Toyota is well aware of this issue and yet there is no recall issue, nor have they issued an extended warranty.
NHTSA #11652186
The transmission on my 2019 vehicle began making loud grinding and whining noises and then started hesitating during acceleration. A Toyota dealership inspected the vehicle and confirmed a failing transmission bearing and advised that the entire transmission must be replaced. The repair was quoted at approximately $12,000. The vehicle has been regularly maintained and serviced. Despite proper maintenance, the transmission failure occurred unexpectedly and prematurely. Because of this issue, the vehicle became unsafe to drive and has now been undrivable for nearly a year. The failure creates a safety risk due to hesitation, loss of acceleration, and unpredictable shifting while merging into traffic or maintaining highway speed. The issue has been reproduced by the dealer and fully documented. There were no warning lights or error messages prior to the failure; the first signs included grinding noises and difficulty shifting. Publicly available reports indicate that Toyota extended warranty coverage in Canada for similar CVT transmission concerns affecting comparable model years, suggesting manufacturer awareness of premature internal component defects. My vehicle’s symptoms match those issues. This defect poses a significant safety hazard, especially given the possibility of sudden power loss. I am filing this complaint because this is clearly a premature CVT failure that has left the vehicle unusable.
NHTSA #11697984
The vehicle has only 106 thousand miles on it, and it started to make a loud sound while driving it with lots of hesitation to accelerate out of the first gear. There were no warning lights on the dashboard. I took it to my mechanic, who stated it was the CVT transmission. The estimated cost is over 6 thousand. I am waiting on the final quote. It is impossible to believe that Toyota has not recalled this vehicle based on this issue and the many complaints.
NHTSA #11625551
At about 64,000 miles I began to hear a loud sound come out of my car while I drove it, so I took it to the Toyota dealership and they said I need a new transmission. My safety and family’s safety is put at risk because my car can stop at any point while driving it. The problem is confirmed by the Toyota dealership! My vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer only the dealership that I bought my car from. There was no warning signs on my car such as a check engine light or anything like that which is even more alarming. The only way I knew there was a problem with my car was because of the sound. Many people are having issues with the transmission when it comes to the Toyota CHR which is surprising how there isn’t a recall already on this because it’s not fair for a car to be at 64k miles and need a new transmission that is super expensive.
NHTSA #11624275
At around 75K miles, the CVT transmission started to give an issue. At highway speeds, a whining sound is noticeable inside the cabin. I took the CHR to a local shop for a diagnostic. They identified the CVT as the cause of the noise. At this point, the noise is the only indicator of CVT failure.
NHTSA #11642352
Toyota CHR 2019 only 115964 miles Used local , transmission failure 10,000 to fix .
NHTSA #11606782
Noises when driving the vehicle coming from the transmission, other users have already complained about the same problem
NHTSA #11638606
Transaxle bearing is failing making loud noise affecting speed control ability and adaptive cruise issues. Vehicle was inspected by Manufacturer representative and repair replacement was denied under warranty, although replacement was recommended.
NHTSA #11606493
Automatic transmission CVT bearings wearing out prematurely. Many owners complaining of safety when transmission bearing fails while driving.
NHTSA #11586258
While driving, my vehicle suddenly jerked and lost significant speed without warning, putting my life at serious risk on the road. When I took it to Toyota, they quoted me over $11,000 to replace the faulty transmission. This issue has been widely reported with Toyota vehicles, yet it remains unresolved. It's alarming to think that someone might have to lose their life before the company takes meaningful action to address this dangerous defect.
NHTSA #11607156
Transmission has failed on this 2019 Toyota CHR 2 years after purchase. Took to Toyota dealership and was told this vehicle is notorious for transmission issues from year 2018-2020. Both Toyota dealership and headquarters are unwilling to look into the issue because there is no “recall” even though supervisor at dealership stated this is an ongoing issue. $10,000 quote for a $17,000 vehicle. Vehicle is out of warranty and was not given any help with this issue.
NHTSA #11563801
Transmission humming at 76k miles, and jerking wildy, almost caused wreck that could have killed me and daughter! And I am not, and I repeat I am not the only one with this problem. All it takes is a quick Google search to find out that nearly all 2018-2019 Toyota Ch-r owners are all complaining about this, and for a 9k Transmission when you still owe 16-24k in payments is ludicrous! Toyota needs to address and fix the issue!
NHTSA #11556892
Noise. Rumbling transmission issue. Potential injuries
NHTSA #11542761
The contact owns a 2019 Toyota C-HR. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, an abnormal whining sound was coming from the rear axle hubs. The contact had taken the vehicle to a dealer where they informed him that they could not offer any assistance due to the vehicle being out of warranty. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and a case number was provided. The contact was informed that a representative would call back however, the contact had not received a response. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.
NHTSA #11421286
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2019 TOYOTA C-HR. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING, IT REVERSED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY INDEPENDENTLY AND CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING OR REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V710000 (POWER TRAIN). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,500.
NHTSA #11153343
Transmission, and I did requested an inspection and they are trying to charge me $10,000 USD to fix it. A failed transmission in a car can put you and other people at risk because it affects your ability to control the vehicle's speed and movement. I took my car to one of my trusted mechanic and he confirmed that transmission was on failure because the humming noise of it and because transmission on this type of cars (Toyota CHR 2019) had that type of issues. Nobody has inspected my car but my mechanic. No prior symptoms of the problem or warnings on my car, I noticed it was something wrong with my car just for the humming noise of the transmission.
NHTSA #11742083
Transmitted failed, this car is national wide scam, there are thousands of people with the same problem
NHTSA #11731760
My 2019 Toyota CHR has only 82,000 mileage, and already required by the dealer to change the transmission which costs a lot
NHTSA #11710940
My transmission is messed up
NHTSA #11701690
Transmission issues
NHTSA #11671660
Took it to the mechanic because I heard grinding and they stated I need a whole new transmission. The transmission in the car is no good and made with faulty materials.
NHTSA #11669474
Bought a 2019 Toyota C-HR in 2021. Took it for regular oil changes, yearly inspection, etc. After only 4 years of owning the car and less than 80,000 miles put on the vehicle, I took the car to the mechanic for an oil change and to investigate a loud noise I was hearing when driving the car. Turns out the CVT transmission was irreparably damaged, requiring a whole new part to be bought. Had the car towed to a Toyota service center for the estimate and the piece cost $15,000. At that point why not get a new car? Car has been deemed undrivable until the transmission is fixed. No warning lights, or suggestion that anything was wrong beyond the sound. Have been told this is a specific problem to C-HR's made between 2017-2022 and that Toyota was possibly trialing a new CVT transmission in these vehicles without telling anyone.
NHTSA #11670741
I have been told the transmission is going out. After researching, I have seen this is a common problem with this year make and model of the vehicle. This should not be happening in a car that is a 2019. It is a safety hazard and frankly, it should be recalled in America as I have seen it was recalled in Canada for the same issues. I have already done 2 transmission flushes on the vehicle, but now nothing seems to help.
NHTSA #11666606
My car is only six years old, so it shouldn't be giving me transmission problems. I always do my maintenance services on time. I'm not the first person to have the same issues with this car once it reaches a certain number of miles. I went to Toyota and they didn't even give me in option to fix it, they just said that I need to buy a new car. This car should be recalled because people don't buy a car just to last them a little while. On top of it, they can't even tell you exactly what's wrong with the transmission; they just know the means the transmission has a problem. You guys to go look at that because a lot of people are talking about that, and it's not safe.
NHTSA #11664375
Transmission is slow to accelerate
NHTSA #11696464
Just like thousands of others with Toyota CHR 2018-2020, our transmissions give out before the suggested mileage for service, and Toyota is not replacing them for free and charging us $13,000 per transmission replacement. We are thousands of complaints. It can't be just us, clearly this car's transmission is defective and needs to be replaced for free.
NHTSA #11726179
About a year ago my car started to make a grinding noise when accelerating. I had taken it to the shop before to get inspection but was never notified about the problem until I had to report to them about the noise that I was hearing. It was then that they told me that my transmission was failing and would need to get it replaced soon. This is scary because for work I drive clients around and if tha transmission were ever to fail on me it could put them and myself at risk of a severe accident. I’m past my warranty and they had quoted me $10k for it which is way more than what I owe left on my car. It’s very unfortunate because I had planned to keep this car for the long term but now it’s looking like I will have to sell it. I’ve tried contacting Toyota about this problem but they said that they can’t do anything about it and I would have to pay out of pocket for it.
NHTSA #11662666
I have a 2019 Toyota CH-R. My car is at about 100,000 miles. My vehicle started making a whirring noise after it exceeded 10mph. I took it into Toyota and they said my transmission needed to be replaced. My car has been maintained properly with scheduled maintenance. This was out of my control. After research, several others have had the same issue with their toyota CH-R. Toyota is quoting me (and others) at $12,700. It is a CVT transmission that is apparently “unique”. This is a safety issue as i am fearful the gears will slip at any moment as i am commuting to and from work. I have filed a claim with Toyota for financial assistance. After investigation they are only agreeing to help with half of the cost when it seems the issue is on Toyota’s end with this type of transmission and not the consumer’s. It is dangerous and impacting those who own this model of vehicle.

No detailed narrative reported.
NHTSA #11679604
The car's AC system made an audible hissing sound from within the cabin, I then smelled what I believe was refrigerant, 10 minutes later the hissing sound stopped and the AC won't work. This occurred when I was idling and was about to start driving. The fan still blows hot air, but will not cool. The car has not been checked by a dealer or independent service provider, due to insufficient funds, but is available to be inspected upon request. No issues prior to failure in March of 2023, mileage is just over 64,000.

Unknown. I am a member of the military stationed in Germany. I purchased 2019 Toyota CH-R built to US specifications here in Germany. I am unable to register my vehicle on your website or toyota.com since my vehicle has never been registered in the US. Is there a way to register my vehicle in a US database that would facilitate the use of .com websites that require VIN verification?

Issue with Windsheild. I've had several issues with random spots in the windshield, the dealer changed it twice and claimed the airo-dynamics causes these spots as wind hits it. I now have a crack on the windsheild that appeared out of now where. I wasnt even driving it. It came from under the passenger side wiper blade. After research, I see several people have the same problem and in the same location. There is NO Rock Chip, NO visual sign of anything hitting the window. My husband said Its a stress fracture. The angle of these windshields does not seem to be a good fit. I love the car, but cant continue with these problems. Toyota is now refusing to replace this window. The cost is over 1500.00! I hope this can be added to a list for a recall. WHILE SITTING STATIONARY IN THE DRIVEWAY, 4500 MILES ON THE VEHICLE ONE MORNING I NOTICED A LARGE CRACK HAD APPEARED ACROSS THE WINDSHIELD, THE CRACK ORIGINATED AT THE TOP EDGE OF THE WINDSHIELD APPROXIMATELY 52 CM FROM RIGHT SIDE AND 61.5 CM FROM LEFT SIDE, TRAVELING DOWNWARD APPROXIMATELY 12 CM BEFORE ENTERING A SWEEPING CURVE TO THE RIGHT AND CONTINUING FOR ANOTHER 35 CM, TOTAL LENGTH OF CRACK IS CURRENTLY APPROXIMATELY 55 CM. THERE IS NO "STARBURST" PATTERN ALONG ANY PART OF THE CRACK INDICATING THAT THE CRACK FORMED WITHOUT IMPACT FROM FOREIGN MATERIAL. AT NO TIME DURING ANY TRIPS WERE THERE ANY NOISES HEARD CONSISTENT WITH A FOREIGN OBJECT STRIKING THE WINDSHIELD. I AM THE ONLY PERSON THAT DRIVES THE VEHICLE. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT INSISTED THAT THE CRACK WAS CAUSED BY A FOREIGN OBJECT STRIKING THE WINDSHIELD, I INFORMED THEM IT HAD BEEN PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY AND HAD NOT ENCOUNTERED ANY "ROAD HAZARDS" WHILE IN THE DRIVEWAY. THEY THEN STATED IT WAS CAUSED BY ROCKS FLYING THROUGH THE AIR. THEY HAVE REFUSED TO HONOR THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY AND INSISTED I PAY FOR THE CORRECTION. TOYOTA HAS A HISTORY OF HAVING DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELDS AS DOCUMENTED IN THE FOLLOWING CLASS ACTION COURT CASE HTTPS://WWW.COURTHOUSENEWS.COM/WP-CONTENT/UPLOADS/2018/03/TOYOTA.CA_.PDF. *TR

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota C-HR. The contact stated that the vehicle occasionally failed to start. On another occasion, there was a tire blowout while driving 70 MPH. The contact replaced the battery, and the instrument panel displayed several warning lights, including the Check Engine, Lane Assist, and Forward Collision. After an initial dealer inspection, the diagnostic test was inconclusive. The contact drove the vehicle off the lot, and the warning lights returned immediately afterwards, and the vehicle was taken back to the dealer for additional diagnostic tests. The dealer subsequently identified a failure with the valve lift controller and an inoperable housing sub-assembly. The parts were replaced. The manufacturer had not yet been notified of the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000.

I was hearing a noise and took my car in. There is a faulty bearing in the CVT transmission. They can not replace the bearing alone, but have to replace the entire CVT transmission, over 9,000.00 cost. I have taken very good care of my car. I have not missed an oil change, tire rotation and have even had brake work done - because of good ownership responsibility. When looking into the issues with my car I saw MANY others are having the same issue. After research I came across a Toyota Service Bulletin that shows toyota is aware of the defect and still continued to sell the car. Service Bulletin TSB002418 was placed before my purchase. This is a default by the manufacture, and they should honor their product and correct.

No warning lights presenting on dash board, my car started making a noise around 100k (almost like something was rubbing against the tire, think playing card in a bicycle spoke) and I thought maybe it was my loose splash guard causing it. No physical issues (gears up/down fine, no vibrations, no shimmy, no play in the steering). Took it to Dav Cava toyota dealership and was told i needed to replace both my transmission and torque converter. $10,500 estimate. That's more than i owe on the vehicle. I have kept oil changes since I've had it (bought used at around 65k miles). I bought toyota because they're a trusted brand. Imagine the stomach-turning disappointment when I was told I needed to come up with $10,500 when I work hard to pay the payments and general maintenance on this car! Checking the forums it seems I'm not the only one having this issue and as a single mom who desperately needs a break, I hope toyota checks these forums and sees that this is an issue that needs addressed!

The alternator dies suddenly and without warning. The battery quickly drains, and you lose control of the power steering. All lights shut off, not allowing for hazards to be turned on. Testing shows the alternator is producing 0.7 Volts, and the battery is at 2 amps. The battery is a Toyota brand, less than 2 years old. The car has 60,000 miles on it.

The contact owns a 2019 Toyota C-HR. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked at a shopping center when she attempted to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The contact stated that there were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called automotive roadside assistance who arrived and jumped started the vehicle. The contact stated that once the vehicle was started, the vehicle was idling very roughly. The contact attempted to shift the vehicle into drive however, the parking brake remained engaged and she could not move the vehicle. The contact was told by roadside assistance to try releasing the parking brake button again. The contact stated that the vehicle then started to move. The contact then moved the vehicle out from the parking lot onto the roadway and while attempting to accelerate, the vehicle would not exceed 15 MPH. The contact drove the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle as a battery memory saver system failure. The battery was replaced. The contact then drove to her residence and contacted the dealer to set up an appointment. The dealer took the vehicle and diagnosed the problem as the memory saver system in the battery. The dealer did not replace the newly purchased battery. The manufacturer was contacted and informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.

STARTED MY CAR AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON CAR SAID TO BRING TO DEALER. WHEN I WAS BRINGING MY CAR TO THE DEALER SUDDENLY MY WHOLE DASH LIT UP AND MY CAR STARTED TO DRIVE STRANGE. THE DEALER THOUGHT IT WAS MY GAS CAP, BUT I MADE THEM CHECK MY CAR AND IT WAS RODENT DAMAGE TO THE WIRES. THEY SAID THIS IS COMMON SINCE CHANGING TO SOY BASED WIRING SINCE IT SEEMS TO ATTRACT ANIMALS, BUT IT IS NOT A WARRANTY ITEM OR RECALL. LUCKILY MY CAR INSURANCE COVERED IT SO IT IS NOT GOING TO COST ME $300+ TO FIX, BUT THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL IF IT IS BECOMING COMMON AND THEY ARE AWARE OF IT. WE HAVE ALSO BECOME AWARE OF OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS WITH NEWER VEHICLES THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TO.

My cvt transmission carrier bearing has went bad in my vehicle. Not only have these bearings been one of the main conplaints, this vehicle has several recalls. And which the recall for the precondition system has went bad in mine months ago. I was driving home when suddenly my car got hard to drive n their were very loud noises. Got it looked at and was told it was that bearing. That u can not afford to even fix. I still owe 12k on this car. Ive inky had it for exactly 2 years with only 114k miles on it. Thr bearing should not be malfunctioning already. Toyota needs to fix it or replace the whole transmission cuz no shop will fix the bearing. They tell me I need to buy a new transmission

- My 20218 C-HR has a hard jerk noise when accelerating from a stop sign. Transmission of the car is malfunctioning, took the car to Toyota Fort Worth and the diagnosed the issue to be a noise coming from the transmission. - Car can suddenly stop while driving it on the freeway, this can cause a serious accident and to myself and others. - There is a TSB related to K71, meaning that the manufacturer is aware of the issue. It is a known issue to them. - No warning sign

This vechicle started getting noise since 2020 when it was below 60 thousand miles. It was reported to the dealer and the tech did not document well( as I know now). Car was in California from2021 to 2024 and same issues were reported and it was not documented or no action took. Car came to Illinois in 2025. Oil changes and other maintenance issues were done by Toyota and fire stone. I took the car for oil change to the dealer in June 2025 and again repoted the whining noise from engine area.dealer diagnosed with transmission issues and replacement recommended. Called Toyota and because the miles are 71000, they refused , although this was reported from2020. Dealer said that 2021 to 2025, car was not maintained in the Toyota facility , they do not know what went wrong, when I look at cars of this type from 2017 onwards, has transmission issues and no recalls done. There are cases Toyota repaired individually. Because , it is not documented by the tech in the facility, I have to pay 9 to 12 thousand dollars to replace the transmission. These types of cars have transmission issues and nothing is done on it or recalled. Needs help,

This is unacceptable almost every CHR I have heard of has this same problem and Toyota refused to take responsibility for it! There transmissions in these cars are horrible and need to be addressed. Every 80k the transmission need to be replaced. Us people who continuously have to buy new cars or new transmissions are suffering because Toyota refuses to fix the issue. Instead they slide it under the rug and decline to help there customers.

Their vehicle failed to accelerate. There were no warning lights illuminated. The local dealer was contacted, who confirmed there was no recall coverage. The vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the failure was due to the fuel pump. The vehicle was not repaired. An independent mechanic was contacted, who determined the failure was due to the fuel pump. The manufacturer was contacted, who referred him to the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.

Severe structural corrosion was discovered on a low-mileage 2019 compact SUV affecting critical suspension components, including the front subframe, lower control arm mounting points, and structural attachment areas. The issue was identified during inspection at a dealership. The technician documented that suspension components were severely rusted, subframe bolts were rusted and cracking, and lower control arms were deteriorating due to corrosion. The technician advised that the vehicle should not be driven and recommended towing for further structural inspection. These components are part of the load-bearing suspension system and may pose a safety risk if failure occurs. This level of corrosion is unusual given the vehicle has approximately 27,000 miles and has been operated in a region without exposure to road salt or severe winter conditions. Independent mechanics who inspected the vehicle also expressed concern about the severity of the corrosion. The problem was confirmed by both a dealership and an independent repair facility. The vehicle was not inspected directly by the manufacturer. No warning lights or messages were present prior to discovery of the issue. Photographic evidence shows rust perforation, material loss, and metal delamination along structural seams, indicating corrosion progressing internally. This condition may compromise suspension mounting integrity and increase the risk of failure while driving. The affected components were repaired and are available for inspection upon reque

The Bridgestone AllSeason WeatherPeak 225/50R 18 tire tread was worn out at 15800 miles. Tires were rotated and alignment performed routinely at Firestone. Inflation was checked every two weeks. Many complaints for this issue by other customers. Early tread wear is dangerous and will cause accidents. How could this tire have a 700 tread rating and who is performing the test for the 700 tread rating?

Yesterday While I was driving down i270 in Maryland without any car around the car hit the break and made the emergency break sound as well as saying “BREAK” in the driver dash. This has happened ~5 times in the past 3 years or so. It’s pretty scary thinking how lucky I have been so far with no one rear ending me when it happens. Also, this has happened a few times while in adaptive cruise control as well.

Vehicle only has 40K miles and it has been giving me battery issues along with an engine spurring sound. The vehicle stopped running suddenly and provided me with a check engine light as well as EPB malfunction. Contacted a mechanic and he believes it may be a manufacturer issues along with possible vehicle recalls. I have kept up with maintenance and there is no reason for so many issues.

Today suddenly, the vehicle gave me a warning message to "Pull over in a safe spot and to not drive the vehicle" along with other messages flashing "Braking power reduced" "Pre-collision system failure" and a bunch of lights came on. Mechanic, over the phone, said "He doesn't understand how a minor rear-bumper colission could affect sensors and electrical things in the front of the car. Another incident, last year, a small nick on one of the wires under the car disabled my entire car and it was undriveable until repaired. I am frustrated that one small issue with a wire, or sensor, or other small gadgety things in the vehicle can disable the entire car and put me in danger while driving.

The system is malfunctioning. Indicators on dash come on showing pre collision system is off. And I have to manually go into the controls, turn it on, but it doesn't immediately turn on. I have to exit out, and enter the menu several times to get it to turn back on. It happens when idling and while driving.

The camera that controls Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, and Automatic Emergency Braking shuts off during high-temperature weather. This was brought up to the dealer, and they dismissed it as normal. This occurs randomly and during the adaptive cruise control use.
