Recalls Reported to NHTSA

The following recalls were reported to NHTSA. A recall does not by itself establish that any individual vehicle is defective.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP:CONTROL/DRIVE MODULE

NHTSA #24V528000

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2022 Veloster N, 2019-2023 Genesis G70, 2022-2023 Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles. The fuel pump may fail, which can result in a loss of drive power.

Reported consequence: A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update engine control module software. In addition, dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pump assembly, as necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning September 9, 2024. Some interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed September 3, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's numbers for this recall are 262 and 023G.

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

NHTSA #22V746000

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, 2022 Santa Cruz, Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles. The vehicle's "fail-safe" limited-mobility drive mode may be impaired, when prompted by a transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power.

Reported consequence: Loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the transmission, as necessary. Dealers will also update the transmission control unit software. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 10, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 236.

Complaints Filed with NHTSA

The following are consumer-reported complaints filed with NHTSA. These are unverified allegations and are not proof that any defect exists.

In January 2026, my engine light illuminated and the vehicle lost power. The dealership found a sudden loss of compression across all four cylinders, requiring a total engine replacement. This occurred without warning, only two months after a routine oil change at the same facility where no issues were reported. Despite opening a case with Hyundai corporate, there has been no progress. My research indicates that while NHTSA Recall 21V301 (Safety Recall 203) specifies 2019–2021 models, the 2022 model shares the same engine design and identical reports of stalling and compression loss. My vehicle has been at the dealership for three months with no resolution. The dealership says they are running tests requested by tech line without providing documentation of the tests or the results. Although, the initial test performed indicated that it was a compression ring issue.

NHTSA #11730758

The vehicle displayed a warning lamp indicating a Cooling System Performance failure. The specific defect relates to the Integrated Thermal-Management Module (ITM) and the thermostat opening prematurely, corresponding to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P218100. This issue requires a repair outlined in Technical Service Bulletin 25-EM-007H, involving a spring installation and ECU update. This failure creates a serious safety concern because improper thermal management can cause the engine to overheat or force the vehicle into a reduced-power 'limp mode' without warning. A sudden loss of acceleration or engine stall while driving in traffic significantly increases the risk of a crash.

On Saturday, [XXX], while driving on the highway, the oil plug on my vehicle suddenly fell out, causing all the oil to drain rapidly. This created an extreme safety hazard not only for myself but also for other drivers on the road. I did not notice the oil spillage until the oil light on the dash appeared. At the time, I was in the leftmost lane traveling at highway speeds, so I could not stop immediately. I had to carefully veer across five lanes of traffic and navigate out of a construction zone before I was able to pull over safely. The engine lost lubrication during this process, and I was forced to have the vehicle towed to Ed Napleton Hyundai in Hazelwood, the same dealership where I purchased and serviced the car, for inspection and repairs. This incident occurred just three weeks after I had an oil change performed at the same dealership. I have been attempting to contact the dealership for updates on the status of my vehicle and the investigation into potential engine damage for the past three days, but I have received limited information until today, when the service manager, Jerry, stated that they installed a new plug and added oil, and since it's not ticking, it's okay. However, having worked in the automotive industry for years, I know that a full teardown is necessary to properly check for damage, including inspecting the bearings, rings, cylinder walls, and turbo for signs of oil starvation. This service was not performed. Additionally, Jerry informed me that speaking to someone higher up would do absolutely nothing for me. This is not an isolated issue. Over the course of my ownership, the dealership has damaged my oil filter by over-tightening and stripping it on two separate occasions during routine maintenance, requiring me to return to the facility each time. On both instances, I had to wait an additional 2 to 3 hours while they installed replacement parts to correct their errors. These repeated mistakes have caused significant inconv INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Kona. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

NHTSA #11670255

Radiator is failing between 60k and 70k miles with no check engine lights. Leaking an entire reservoir of coolant within a 24hr time period. Even when the temperature gage went above the middle mark and to the 3/4 mark the check engine light never came on.

NHTSA #11664708

I believe it’s a barring in the engine but it is like a knocking.

NHTSA #11667587

The vehicle has lose of acceleration while driving.. On Freeway the gas pedal loses acceleration. Lift off gas it accelerates then loses acceleration again. (4 times in a row) It was a big safety issue. There was no where to pull off. I made it to the nearest exit and took backroads home. Took it to Dealership they couldn't replicate the issue. I contacted Hyundai and they had the car sent back to dealership and so far they can't replicate it. It has done this numerous times, at different times and speeds. The car is now at the dealership for the second time (since the 17 of December) There were NO WARNING LIGHTS so dealership says hard to diagnose the issues.

NHTSA #11632461

I purchased my 2022 Hyundai Kona on August 28, 2024, and I am the first registered owner. Only 48 days after purchase, the vehicle suddenly broke down without warning while stopped at a red light in [XXX] after traveling from [XXX] . The vehicle had to be towed. Since then, the vehicle has repeatedly experienced dangerous engine and timing-related issues despite major repairs, including an engine replacement, timing chain repairs, and multiple dealership inspections. The most dangerous incidents involve sudden power loss and large clouds of smoke while driving. On January 1, 2026, while attempting to pass a semi-truck on a multi-lane highway, the vehicle suddenly lagged, lost acceleration power, and emitted a large cloud of white smoke from the exhaust. This created an extremely unsafe situation because I was actively passing traffic at highway speeds and could have been struck by surrounding vehicles. I have also experienced these failures late at night on busy highways while traveling between [XXX] and [XXX] . In March 2026, the vehicle again emitted a large cloud of smoke and resumed lagging during acceleration. On April 23, 2026, Hyundai of Meridian informed me they personally witnessed the vehicle emit another large cloud of black smoke during test driving. These smoke events can reduce visibility for surrounding drivers and create hazardous roadway conditions. The vehicle has spent approximately 149 days in repair facilities, nearly 24% of the time I have owned it. Multiple dealerships documented timing chain slack, cam timing issues, and major engine concerns. Despite the recurring failures and safety concerns, Hyundai denied replacing the engine again and denied buying back the vehicle. I no longer feel safe operating this vehicle due to the risk of sudden power loss, engine failure, and smoke emissions while driving in traffic. On 10/4/2024 I was driving my 2022 Hyundai Kona SEL (61, 492 miles on odometer) with a cruise control set at 75 mph for my morning commute into work. I was approx 15 miles away from my house and at least 7 miles away from my place of employement. Suddenly and without warning the engine revved to beyond 4500 RPM and shut off. The lights on the dashboard all lit up and a message flashed on the screen stating engine cut off, turn off car and restart. I was surrounded by several cars at this time. I was able to navigate to the shoulder of the 2 lane road I was on and bring the car to a stop. When I tried to turn the car back on it would not. I had the car towed to the dealership. First they had to replace the battery as they stated there was not even enough juice in the battery to update the onboard computer for diagnostic. Then, after a week of waiting, I called and was informed that the engine was deak (advisor used the phrase "the engine when clunck"). As of today, 11/12/2024, I do not have a full diagnosis for the engine failure as the dealership has yet to inform me even though I have submitted multiple requests through various means. Service advisors states that the engine will be covered under the CPO warranty. At the time of the incident, the engine had not given any indications of any issues (like noices, stalls, etc). My sister had driven the car two days before and said it was driving fine. I had had the oil changed a week before and the tech did an inspection at that time and all parts were in working/good condition.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Kona. The contact stated that while at a stop light, the accelerator pedal was depressed while starting to make a left turn and the vehicle shut off. The vehicle rolled to the shoulder. The shift to park or neutral message was displayed. The vehicle was shifted to neutral and restarted. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who failed to retrieve a fault code. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 43,000. The VIN was not available.

My Check Engine light came on and stayed steady (not blinking). The Cause for it is Unknown to me. I took it to the Dealership and they scheduled me to bring it in 3 days later, 3/12/24, to determine if it was something simple or if would take up to a couple days to fix. They assured me that if the light remained steady, I would be fine to drive the car. If it began blinking, then bring it back in. If the fix would take a day or more, they don't do loaner cars so I'd have to rent one (no cars to borrow and Ubers don't take wheelchairs). Approximately an hour after I arrived on 3/12 (I had to wait for my car), they gave me my car back. They had to order a part that was on back order that could take weeks or months to arrive. The part had something to do with preventing the engine from overheating, but I was not to worry so long as the Check Engine light stayed steady. They then asked how many miles I typically drove each day, "just around town, right?" I answered, usually, but that I was currently taking medical treatments for the next two weeks which involved around 70 miles roundtrip plus my usual daily miles. The Service person winced at that. They then told me that if the car overheated, to not worry, just pull over until it cooled off, and if it didn't, just use the Roadside Assistance service, then bring the car to the Dealership and they'll give me a loaner car (?!?) until my car could be repaired. A bit in shock, I left. After thinking about it, I find the Dealership's handling suspicious. 1) They didn't give me any paperwork. In all previous interactions, they've given me paperwork even if I've only had my fluids topped up. 2) If a back ordered part could take up to months to come in, it seems most likely to me that the scarcity is due to huge number of customers needing the part, not a supply-chain issue. I am disabled and in a wheelchair, so need my car to take care of myself. I hope everything is actually okay. If not, please help.

My daughter left our house in our 2022 Hyundai Kona on Friday, 1/13/23, to head back to college which is 5 hours from home. A little more than an hour down the road after leaving our house, she said that the car started sounding strange, so she called her mother. At this time, she was on a two lane country road with no safe options or areas to pull over. My wife advised my daughter to continue driving until she found a safe place to pull over. As she continued onwards, she came to a stop sign in the countryside and the car died on her. She restarted it and was able to continue her trip. Several miles later a light came on, but she was still not to a safe area. By the time she got to a safe place, other lights had come on, and the car died in the parking lot. The car would not restart so we called a tow truck to take the Kona to the nearest Hyundai dealership which is where it sits today. Upon inspection, the Hyundai dealership discovered that the drain plug was missing from the oil pan which caused the oil to drain and ultimately led to catastrophic engine failure. The engine needs to be replaced at a quote of $9753.08. The Kona’s last oil change was on 10/19/22 at 8,630 miles and was done a third party oil change facility. The mileage on the Kona when delivered to the repairing Hyundai dealership is 13,775. No engine lights or oil change needed indicators were on before our daughter began her trip on 1/13/23. I contend that this is a known issue with Hyundai engines based off of internet research that indicates that the NHTSA is actively investigating this exact issue of the drain plug falling out and causing catastrophic engine failure. This situation is a safety issue because the engine could have seized while in motion on a two-lane country road causing a wreck.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Kona. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that there was bad fuel in the vehicle. The failure reoccurred and the vehicle was taken back to the same dealer who reset the codes. The failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with a cylinder misfire. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 5,500.

While at a stop light, the engine of my 2022 Kona died. No warning lights came on prior. It just died in the middle of the street. Then took several minutes and several tries to get the car to restart. Accelerator didn’t work at first either. Driving on highway warning light for tire pressure came on. Diagnostics said everything was fine. Then the warning light turned off. More and more frequent trouble accelerating onto highway. Car-play does not stay connected. Often doesn’t connect at all. Car dying in the middle of the street, not accelerating onto the highway was extremely frightening and I felt very lucky that it didn’t cause an accident, or worse. I have contacted my dealership about the issues and was told that I could have an appointment in 2 months! They don’t care about the safety of the people driving their cars and, clearly, they no longer care about the quality of their cars. As far as the CarPlay goes, they looked at the screen and then didn’t fix a thing. It still isn’t working properly. This is my second Hyundai and the quality has really diminished over the years and the problems have increased exponentially. The car dying while driving and accelerator not working properly has now happened several times. Today was only the most recent.

Engine began knocking/shaking suddenly while highway driving, service engine light came on. Pulled over, turned off ignition. Tried restarting and would not start. Towed to dealership and diagnosed as engine failure, possible timing chain failure. Complete engine replacement recommended by dealer service dept. Dealer service dept. will replace engine free of charge as vehicle is well under warranty from Hyundai. The vehicle had less than 4000 miles on it. Safety of myself and others was put at risk due to failure happening while highway driving, fortunately I was able to pull over on shoulder before the engine completely seized.

While driving on a freeway, the drain plug fell out, dumping all of the oil onto the road. The vehicle had been serviced by just one facility and I had only had this brand new vehicle for 7 months when this occurred. This incident put the driver, any passengers, and anyone on the road nearby at risk. The drain plug loss was verified by a Hyundai certified service facility and then I was asked to tow it to the Hyundai certified facility that performed all of the services. I was told that Hyundai Motor America sent representatives to inspect the vehicle at both facilities along with the service staff at each facility. I have not been informed of anyone else inspecting the vehicle such as law enforcement or insurance representatives. There were no warning lamps or messages or symptoms prior to the drain plug falling out. There was no evidence of any oil leak, either. There were warning lamps immediately afterward. Blue link sent me a message as soon as the vehicle was turned back on after being turned off. The message said "a possible condition with your engine control system has been detected with your 2022 Hyundai Kona..." My 2022 Hyundai Kona is still sitting at the Hyundai certified repair facility over two years later. I had to hire a lawyer to try to get this situation rectified. No one wants to accept the responsibility for the drain plug falling out of my vehicle.

12-3-21, with only 103 miles on my new car, the check engine light came on. I drove back to the dealer where I purchased the car - Fitzgerald, and spoke to Maurice the manager, and Garret in the service department. Garret informed me he "wiggled the wires" and the check engine light went off. On 12-5-21, with 129 miles on the car the check engine light came on again. I went back to Fitzgerald and spoke to Frank, who works in sales. Frank told me the service department was closed on Sunday and I have to comeback Monday 12-6-21.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Kona. The contact stated while driving 5 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently shut off due to the idle STOP/START feature. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA to file a complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 5.

Recall with car regarding coolant. Last year Hyundai apparently addressed; however, coolant light came on, despite coolant being full. Told by different dealership that with these issues, it needs to be checked and rechecked multiple times; otherwise, issues arise again (as in my case). Want this addressed by dealership. They are charging me a diagnostic fee of $198. Previously, when brought car in for recall work, equipment not always working.

Charging port door will not open. Not sure if it is an issue with acuator, which employee in service dept at dealer said that is common problem. Seems like if this issue with less than 20k, perhaps should also be recall item.

On February 3rd 2025, directly after putting my Kona in park, I felt it pulsing, saw the RPM dial bouncing repeatedly up and down, and the overhead lights flickering in rhythm with the vibrating/pulsing and RPM dial bounces. I recorded this incident, then turned my car off and on again at which point these observations could not be repeated - in other words, the car was acting fine. There were no other observable issues until March 1st, 2025, when these exact symptoms emerged under different circumstances. I came to an idle at a red light (with the auto-start/stop feature turned off for this drive) when the RPM bouncing, car pulsing back and forth, and lights flickering happened again. My car felt as though it was about to stall this time until, thankfully, the light turned green and I could accelerate. The issues dissipated with acceleration. I have this incident on video as well. I have a little over 63K miles on this car. I drive all day for my job, so it's used often for short trips throughout the city.

HORN STOPS WORKING. IT STOPPED WORKING ABOUT A YEAR INTO OWNING THE CAR, THEN AGAIN A FEW WEEKS LATER. THE HORN SEEMS TO STOP WORKING AFTER WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID IS REFILLED; NOT SURE IF IT'S RELATED THOUGH. There were several recall/service notices on my vehicle. I brought car to dealer in May and they were unable to address them all b/c I was informed a dealer specific piece of equipment necessary for the recall had broken and they could not address that issue. Why is it saying on NHTSA website zero unaddressed recalls for my car? Here are some of the notices: Service Campaign 9A4: Kona EV DTC Inspection, BMS Update, and BSA Replacement – Dealer Best Practice August 29, 2023 I believe there was an additional issue of concern. I originally scheduled for early 2024 & then there was an additional recall/concern and I could not be accommodated until May 2024; however, as mentioned, they were unable to address all the issues at that time. Please let me know.

Horn needs replacing. No bodily damage was done.

NHTSA #11570682

Horn fails in very cold weather. When the horn is depressed/pushed down on, no sound is produced. The first and second incident caused it to stop working completely. During the THIRD incident, repeated pressing of the horn would eventually produce a weak sound that would eventually grow louder. This compromises safety because the horn cannot be counted on to alert others to imminent possible danger/collision. The dealer confirmed it twice and replaced the horn twice. The first incident was remedied by replacing the horn fuse. The vehicle gave absolutely no warning or symptoms that the horn was going to fail to produce any sound. Incident dates: 12/25/2022, 02/26/2023, and 01/18/2024

NHTSA #11572620

The horn stopped working less than a year after I bought the car brand new. The dealer finally agreed to repair/replace it in Feb 2024. Less than a year later it is not working again. A horn is important for alerting other drivers to impending collisions. It also leaves me without a panic button, another important safety feature.

The push door to the charging port locks and I am unble to open it. It will sometimes unlock if I push the unlock button several times. This is worrisome since I need access to the charging port to charge my batter. Not sure if there is a design flaw with the latch to the door.

I purchased in July 2021 todays date is Nov 22nd it has been 5 months and for the second time I get to my parked car and the power locks don’t work with the key fob and the engine simply will not start. The first time I had the tow truck guy jump start the engine and it worked up until today, I took it in for a diagnostic and they said the battery was healthy everything checked out. Today again Nov 22 I get to my car again won’t unlock and engine simply will not turn on with key entry model SE. This time I had them tow to the dealership for more evaluation. This is a road hazard what happens if the engine decides to stop working while driving the vehicle? Both times I double checked and I did not leave any lights on everything was shut off only thing blinking was the security alarm system. I believe it is a manufacturer defect in the engine since the battery tests out fine.

NHTSA #11441411

I purchased a 2022 Hyundai Kona brand new, and since day one it has had serious performance issues — specifically, harsh jolting during acceleration and occasional stalling. These symptoms are dangerous, especially when driving in traffic, merging, or crossing intersections. I discovered that a recall existed prior to my purchase, but it was not performed until after nearly two service visits — even though I had already reported these symptoms. I was never informed of the recall by the dealership before those visits. After the recall was eventually performed, the issues continued, and the dealership began doing software resets during service visits. However, these resets have not resolved the problem, and the symptoms return shortly after. The dealership claims there’s nothing wrong and refuses to escalate the issue. I have contacted Hyundai Consumer Affairs and am working with a national case manager, but there is still no resolution. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle. I believe this may be related to a defect in the transmission control system, electronic throttle, or dual-clutch transmission. I’m requesting that NHTSA investigate this as a safety-related defect, as it has persisted since purchase and affects both the safety and drivability of the vehicle.

I had the radiator replaced by the Ourisman Hyundai Laurel dealership on 10/1/25. Radiator replacement was under warranty. On 10/4/25car overheated while driving. I pulled the car over and called for a tow truck. Car was leaking lots of coolant. Brought it to service center at Ourisman Hyundai Laurel, they stated “the hose to the thermostat was not all the way on. Put hose on correctly no more leaking.” On 10/15/25 multiple lights came on the dashboard including the master warning light. Took car to Ourisman Hyundai Laurel again; received the car back, dealership stated “ TECH COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE LIGHTS POPPING ON DASHBOARD. UPON FURTHER DIAGNOSIS TECH FOUND THAT THERE WAS A CONNECTOR NOT GETTING THE PROPER CONTACT TO COIL NUMBER 1 TECH RECONNECTED THE CONNECTOR AND TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE FOR 5 MILES. NO CONCERNS PRESENT AT THIS TIME.” On 10/20 I brought the car in to Ourisman Hyundai Laurel again because Electronic Stability Control light as well as ABS warning light and several other warning lights came on multiple times. Ourisman Hyundai Laurel service technician said they could not duplicate the problem and there is nothing they can do. This is a safety issue because it concerns the electronic stability control and brakes.

The horn on my 2022 Hyundai Kona has failed multiple times. It has been replaced twice already, and it has stopped working again at around 65,000 miles. This is a serious safety concern as I am unable to alert other drivers in emergency situations. The repeated failure of the horn suggests a possible defect in the electrical system or horn assembly. I am requesting an investigation into this issue.

Horn was going in and out of working for the first few months after purchase. Now the horn does not work at all. It is not the fuse. As seeing through other complaints this is a very common problem and should be on Hyundai to fix.

Started my 2022 Kona EV as usual in my driveway in Southern California in May 2023. Vehicle started then flashed "Check Vehicle System (EV) failure code appeared. Car would not stay started. Had it towed to Dealer they kept if for 2 week and called me to say the vehicle was fixed and I could come pick it up. Repair Order said that the "EV Safety Plug failed upon testing" That was a Friday afternoon. Drove the vehicle home and it seemed to be fixed. The next day (Saturday) went out in the am to run errands and got the same code again and again it wouldn't run. Again had it towed to Dealer (with poor Hyundai Roadside Service). It remains there as I suspect the Dealer tried an easy fix instead of a major one. Will update with status. Already a California Lemon Law buyback situation. I'm not even going to try to work it out because the new car is not operating as advertised. Car is unreliable.

The following was posted on 12/5/22 on Kona Owners Forum: "USA location. Have a '22 Kona (EV; but, that apparently that not relevant to problem). Horn stopped working at about 7500 miles. Immediately made appt with dealer. On day of service there was another 2022 Kona (gas powered) in shop for same thing. Since I only have one car and wife with Alzheimer's, dealer checked obvious things and released me, saying the other owner could leave their Kona for detailed diagnosis. Dealer reported back to me that they believed they had found problem with other Kona, ordered part and would let me know if problem would be solved for the other Kona. If problem solved they would replace my part, of course under warranty. Today I was informed part didn't fix other Kona. So, I am without horn and dealer back to square one. Dealer said there is no recall and no tech bulletin addressing this problem. I can see from forum history that many have experienced a failed horn. HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED A SOLUTION? If so, please share solution. Dealer welcomes any info I can provide. I think I will also report this to US Dept of Transportation, since 'no horn' is a safety hazard and may in fact be illegal.

The electrical system is not fulling shutting down after the vehicle is turned off and the 12 volt battery drains. This also caused the Instrument Panel to fail and made the car not safe to drive as we had no speedometer or odometer. The battery drain happened over and over again. The car is a lemon. This car has been at the dealer since December 30th, with no fix in sight.

My hybrid or power battery failure, my EV Hyundai Kona from October 14, 2022 up to now in maintenance at the dealer “Keyes Mission Hills Hyundai.” They withdrew every month the lease amount, from my side I pay monthly lease and insurance for car and gap. Every time contact them just swiftly disregarding the whole call and promises in, even they didn’t call back with solution or updates as promised in the call. I wanna get a solution for all these. Stop draining my money, I’m still using my old car and paying for gas every week.

This 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric keep draining the battery after I charged my electric car overnight. It has happened 6 or 7 times now, which I think Hyundai needs a recall on this car. It killed the 12V battery after fully charged the car. Something has drained the battery completely. It is very annoying when this happened.

NHTSA #11472706

The 12V battery keeps draining on this 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric. This problem happened when I owned the car for 7 months, I believe the battery management system from Hyundai caused the ruin and drainage to the 12V battery. It has happened 10 or more time ever since the battery keeps draining and Hyundai refused to take any responsibility in their faulty 12V battery.

I noted a sever drop in the full charge range. The battery meter does not reflect the true and accurate available storage. You can’t depend on these readings.

The vehicle trunk doors pops open. This has been happening for several months. We’ve taken it to the dealership. They said that it was not covered and there has been no recall on this, but it’s still happening and it’s very dangerous. It’s happened on the freeway on the back roads at night it doesn’t matter it just when it feels like it wants to open up it beeps loudly and light comes on the dashboard as something is wrong and It will just pop open.

December 2025: Yet ANOTHER horn failure. Pressed the vehicle's horn to alert another driver that they were drifting into my lane on the highway, and it FAILED to produce the loud sound that it is SUPPOSED TO make. It needed to be replaced again for the FOURTH time. Part 96611-J9500 was replaced—AGAIN. This is a continued safety issue that Hyundai has neglected to address and fix. Spontaneous horn failure is a HAZARD. The horn is there to warn others of possible danger.

NHTSA #11704314

My horn on my car has went out the first time and now it just went out again and it’s a manufacturing issue! Hyundai refuses to fix it because it’s not under warranty anymore! And it’s so dangerous now since I don’t have a horn again! I should have not have to fix it when it’s not my fault! And other people have the same issue with your Kona’s to! The dealership even told me that’s it’s been an issue with the horns!

I have had my horn replaced three separate times at my local Hyundai dealership. It recently passed the NC vehicle inspection, but the horn failed the third time sometime after that inspection in Feb-2025. I have never had a horn EVER fail on ANY car I have owned for the past 50 years. A horn is a critical safety necessity and it is expected to work - especially in times of emergency. I was almost run off the highway, once by a semi-trailer and each time I discovered my horn had failed - it was due to my needing to use it to alert pedestrians or other motor vehicles to avoid accidents. The dealer would not reveal WHY this has failed three times except to state that they 'replaced the horn'. The dealer is the only one to have attempted an examination, diagnosis and supposed repair for this problem. There are no warning lights or other type of notification that would let me know of a horn failure. The only way to know that it had failed - was my immediate need to employ the use of the horn in an emergency - and it's silence aka malfunction at the worst possible times.

I purchased this 2022 Kona used with 12,000 miles in April 2024. On 4 occasions it has failed to start. When starting the vehicle with push button I only heard a series of clicking. There was no other sound made while trying to start the car. My husband had a remote jumper and attached it to the battery as directed on the jumper, then pushed the start button. The vehicle started immediately. The vehicle then ran normally. I episode occurred after the vehicle sat while we were away for 2 weeks on vacation. Again, using the remote jumper, the vehicle started immediately. Another occasion, the vehicle was driven that day and when attempting to move the car from the driveway into the garage, it once again failed to start. Just a series of clicking sounds. Application of the remote jumper once again started the car immediately. On the 4 th occasion (XXX) I was stopped at a traffic light waiting for the right turn arrow to appear. It was raining hard. The vehicle cut off (as it normally does when idling while stopped) then the dashboard went dead. The safety flashers would not work nor could I restart the car. This time there was no sound or clicking. I exited the vehicle in heavy rain and traffic, got the remote jumper from the trunk, raised the hood in the rain and heavy traffic and proceeded to attach the jumper to the car battery. The car started immediately. This last occasion of the vehicle shutting down was extremely dangerous. As I stated it occurred in a heavy rain in a very congested and heavily traveled city road. Visibility was poor due to the weather and lack of safety flashers (Toledo, Ohio at the corner of [XXX] ). I was fearful standing outside the vehicle with so much traffic. I was blocking the right turn lane so people behind me were not happy. I am [XXX] and unable to push it to the side of road. I believe that intersection has a left turn lane, 2 straight lanes, and the right turn lane. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

1. Component or System Failed or Malfunctioned: The primary component that has consistently failed or malfunctioned is the air conditioning (AC) system. The AC unit does not adequately cool the vehicle's cabin, especially in hot weather. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request; it has been previously inspected by authorized Hyundai dealerships. 2. How Safety was Put at Risk: The malfunctioning AC unit poses a significant health and safety risk, particularly due to the presence of a [XXX] infant who frequently rides in the vehicle. Driving in a hot car without effective cooling can lead to heat-related distress for a young child. There is also a concern that this persistent issue may indicate a broader manufacturing defect, potentially warranting a safety recall. 3. Problem Reproduced or Confirmed by Dealer/Service Center: Yes, the problem has been repeatedly reproduced and confirmed by an authorized Hyundai dealership. Paramus Hyundai has examined this specific AC issue on four separate occasions during the last summer, and a fifth visit is now scheduled/imminent. Despite these multiple service attempts, the issue remains unresolved. 4. Inspection by Manufacturer, Police, Insurance, or Others: The vehicle and its AC component have been inspected multiple times by an authorized Hyundai dealer (Paramus Hyundai). The manufacturer, Hyundai Motor America, is aware of this ongoing issue, as evidenced by two formal customer service cases: an older case (Case Number: [XXX]) handled by Customer Service Specialist Raghad, and a more recent, open case (Case Number: [XXX]) handled by Customer Service Specialist Simran. The repeated advice given for the new case is the same as previous attempts, indicating a lack of definitive resolution despite manufacturer involvement through their customer service channels. 5. Warning Lamps, Messages, or Other Symptoms: No specific warning lamps or messages have appeared on the vehicle's dashboard related to the INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While on the highway the transmission completely stopped shifting and stayed in first gear and would only rev up the engine when the accelerator was applied.I had to coast slowly off the freeway to an exit to safely park. Apparently there are other customers that have experienced this issue and this raises a lot of concern on the safety of operating this vehicle.

Transmission has extremely hard shifts from 1 to second when quickly accelerating. This can cause you to not be able to accelerate quickly enough to get out of traffic. I have heard this is a common issue from other Kona N-Line owners.

Vehicle Speed Control,Forward Collision Avoidance4 complaints

There are multiple issues with the Adaptive Cruise Control: -When setting the cruise control speed, it can drop 10-15 mph until it kicks in. -When a car pulls in front of you with the Adaptive Cruise Control on, it takes to long to recognize it has to slow down and has to abruptly decrease speed when it finally does. -If the Adaptive Cruise Control does slow down because of a driver in front of you and that driver changes lanes, the Adaptive Cruise Control can again take 10-mph drop until it kicks in. https://www.konaissues.com/ https://www.hyundai-forums.com/threads/2022-kona-cruise-control-unusable.680949/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Hyundai/comments/q80vhz/cruise_control_in_2022_kona_limited_is_whack/ https://www.carproblemzoo.com/hyundai/kona/2022/adaptive-cruise-control-problems.php

NHTSA #11472535

Cruise control on the 2022 Kona is not viable. In the standard cruising gears the cruise control is unresponsive for a long duration resulting in reductions of speed of up to 11 MPH at highway speeds, in traffic. The response of the cruise control to following a car can take up to 1 minute to actually try and recover speed.

NHTSA #11497386

Adaptive Cruise Control is practical non-functional. There is a major delay when setting the cruise control speed before it actually kicks in. Speed can slow down upwards 10-15 mph below the intended set speed and take roughly 30 seconds. Once it engages its spotty with it's functionality. Depending on traffic scenarios it seems to reset the ability to re-engage cruise control and will again dropping down speed taking 15-30 seconds for before re-engaging.

NHTSA #11467012

Show 1 more

The cruise control does not engage. When setting the adaptive cruise control I have had the car slow down 15-20 mph before turning the cruise control off because traffic is backing up behind me and I become a hazard on the road. I have taken it to 2 different dealerships, the one I purchased the car from and one that is closer to my home as I moved and now live in a different state from where I purchased the car. Both dealerships claimed they were not able to replicate the issue. However, every time I drive the car and try to use cruise control I have the same issue of the cruise control not engaging. The car dashboard's speed indicator is supposed to turn green and make a "ding" sound when you engage the cruise control at the posted speed limit. My car does not do this. The speed limit on the freeway here is 80mph and it will turn green and "ding" at 81mph but still not actually engage and maintain the speed. I have had numerous incidents where cars behind me honk and have to go around because I was slowing down so much. I spoke with another 2022 Kona owner and they stated that they have had the same problem and they were told the same thing by a different dealership that they bought their vehicle from.

I found a lot of shaved metals when I did the oil change for the Gear Reduction. It made a lot of noises when driving or the wheel of fortune sounds whether the car is in Regenerative Braking. The sounds developed as time goes on but Hyundai failed to recall this issue. I found this has been an ongoing issue since 2019 when Hyundai make this Kona EV, but their engineers didn’t fix this type of issue and continue to manufacture the Kona EV with the same Gear Reduction Assembly and it caused a lot of noises with these shaving metals found in the oil changes. This is abnormal for a GRU to have so many metals found in the oil. Thus, it made a lot of noises. Now my car can’t even drive because of this. The GRU has been broken because of this issue that Hyundai didn’t even fix since 2019.

Around 8,000 miles, mid-drive my check engine light came on and immediately the ability to speed up became very shotty. I have a 2022 kona n-line. I could put my foot on the floor and it would take forever to get up to speed if at all. It was very here and there and seemed to have a mind of its own when it would do this. I’ve had it into the shop 5-6 different times since then to have it addressed and I’m still having issues with it. They replaced some valance, the solanoid, and just recently completely replaced the entire turbo system to try and fix the problem. It seems to have helped, but I still have this ongoing clicking sound since this started when the car downshifts it seems like, that has yet to be diagnosed. It’s not a normal car sound at all and nobody seems to even notice this sound I mention every time I take it in. I’ve read similar stories with this same model of car, yet there’s no active recall on it. I’ve been dealing with this for months and it’s aggravating the amount of time I’ve put in to trying to fix this. I travel for work which only makes things so much more frustrating to work around.

Car will stop running and not start back up when stopped at a light or stop sign sometimes. I have started driving with the auto start stop off because I will be stuck at a light or stop sign because it will power off but not come back on again. This has occurred several times. The dealership told me there was no issue 11/22/24 but were willing to sell me another battery if I wanted to just replace the battery. The battery would test fine and then not and then fine again. I did price battery’s and they tested my battery at auto zone when pricing them and it tested fine with them also. They did not feel like it was a battery issue. I don’t either now since it stays on no problem when I turn off the auto start stop. There is something honestly wrong because if I leave that feature on, it will power off and sometimes stay off. The first times it happened was in November 2024 but it keeps happening. Sometimes i forget to click off the auto start stop and it will happen to me again but I shouldn’t have to turn that feature off to prevent my car from shutting down and not restarting when stopped.

There was a parasitic or phantom drain on my 12v battery (after 7 months 6K miles) - DEAD. A dealer service tech determined it to be the Harman Kardon radio (KONA EV Limited). Drained 3 batteries before it was found to be the culprit. Radio on backorder with no sign of ever showing up. Car has been at the dealer long enough to trigger the lemon law in CA. After only having 2300 miles on my 2022 Kona electric I received a warning indicator on my dash, “Electrical system error.” I looked in the manual and was directed to take the car to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the issue and shared that the battery itself is defective and a new one will need to be ordered. As a result, I began some online research into the issue. It appears that similar issues arose within previous year models, and some even resulted in fires once the battery reached 100%. I also read other stories about how batteries had inconsistent charging rates. I Experienced an issue with inconsistent charging rates prior to the error message but assumed it was simply me not remembering the percentage it was at when initially plugged in. After reading the issues I quickly realized it was not a fluke. I also felt it important to report bc I asked the dealer if they had encountered any other issues with the Kona EV and it’s battery units and they said no. Obviously, this was before I did my own research, and am more very surprised they said they have had no other issues knowing that their copy recalled nearly 100,000 cards recently for faulty batteries.

Pirelli P Zero 235 / 40 R19 96Y Purchased a 2022 Hyundai Kona N on 7/23/22. At 8ooo miles all 4 tires are cracking on side wall and tread area. Hyundai said those tires are not to be driven on if the outside temperature is 40 degrees or lower. We currently live in Joplin Missouri. When we purchased the vehicle we were not informed about the situation with the tires and temperature. The warranty on the Hyundai website stated the tires should last for 30,000 miles. All 4 tires need to be replaced, if we knew about this issue we would have made arrangements, prior to the purchase, to have different tires placed on the vehicle. We feel that we have been taken advantage of due to the lack of information on Hyundai’s part. On 4/7/23 I contacted Hyundai and was told to take the vehicle to a Hyundai dealer and have the tires inspected. On 4/10/23 we took the vehicle to the Hyundai dealer and they inspected the tires and recommended that they be replaced and they would send a complaint to Hyundai. The car is only 3 weeks old with just over 1000 miles on it. After pulling over on the side of the road and turning the car off and on, the problem disappeared and the check engine light turns off. The vehicle does not acknowledge that there was an issue. After doing some research, it seems to be consistent with a common issue with Hyundai vehicles having defective ignition coils. Common issue in multiple Konas, Elantras and other Hyundai vehicle The danger of the control of the car on the highway when this issue occurs at random is sufficient enough to ensure that all these vehicles are recalled to get the problem fixed.

Vehicle Speed Control2 complaints

It is called a "Smart Cruise" and it does not hold the speed. When driving on the interstate and the speed does not hold that would cause a risk of collision by other vehicles that are driving the appropriate speed. I took the car to my Hyundai dealer and a tech drove it. He said he got the same result of not holding the speed it was set at. I was told this is a problem with the Smart Cruise and that there was nothing that could be done at this time. There was nothing to say the cruise control was not working correctly

NHTSA #11486593

The adaptive cruise control does not engage in a timely fashion when activated. The speed reduces 8-12 mph before it kicks in. Speed always decreases 5 to. 21 mph on every hill. This inconsistency causes traffic to bunch around me. The dealership says nothing can be done to fix the problem. This problem is so frustrating and dangerous that I no longer use the feature.

While at a complete stop at and intersection the idle stop and go system shut the engine down. When I took my foot off the break the engine started but as soon as I stepped on the gas pedal, the engine shut down. The cluster gage told me out the vehicle in neutral and restart. This issues has happened numerous times. Most times were while stopped in traffic and could have been a factor in a car rear ending me. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership. They are very helpful and were able to replicate the issue. After conferring with a Hyundai Motors tech line, who said this has been a problem with other 2022 Konas, the dealership did replace a solenoid but the issue remains. The were no warning or check engine light at all.

I went to use the horn at a car that blew through a stop sign and there was no horn sound. This was my first time using the horn since I bought it brand new. No warning lights no nothing.

Electrical System,Vehicle Speed Control,Service Brakes1 complaint

When I first brought the car for its first service appointment (6 months after purchase), I informed the service dept at the dealership that the car seemed to accelerate itself when I was driving. They said they hit a reset button and that I shouldn't have any more problems. What I found was that the car then drove sluggishly but it did not accelerate anymore. Recently however (2.5 years into the purchase), the car started "sliding" when I hit the break pad. I took the car in again for service a few months ahead of time and they said that my car mat was wedged under the break pad and that was what was causing the car to slide when I hit the break. The car slid but also accelerated by about 5 miles, however I was able to quickly break and stop it without incident. This last service was on Friday, August 1st, and on Sunday August 3, the car slid and accelerated again - without the floor mat being wedged under the break. On Monday morning (August 4th) I called Hyundai so many times that I lost count. I was never able to speak with a service employee but I was given an appointment for a week and half later. According to ChatGPT, it is a common issue with the 2022 Kona and it should be recalled.

Electrical System,Visibility/Wiper1 complaint

During the winter the vehicle does not produce heat. There is a knocking sound from under the dash and only cold air comes out of all the vents. When it was 20 degrees out I measure 35 degree air out the vents over the couse of an hour drive. The car has been to the dealer multiple times for this issues. They have acknowledged the problem and have tried replaing different parts but the problem still occurs. It's very cold in the car when it's below freezing outside and it's difficult to clear the windows of fog, frost, and snow with no heat. The HVAC system will make the knocking sound when turing on the car and sometimes when driving also. Trying to adjust the temperature will sometimes trigger the noise. I feel the knocking sound and lack of hear are related.

As I was backing out of my driveway, I noticed my camera started flashing a green screen and a message appeared intermittently with the flashing green screen saying ‘no camera signal try again later. This lasted the entire time I was backing up including once I shifted into drive then it disappeared. I feel that this is a safety risk to others who may be walking or driving by me if I am unable to use the camera. Clearly I don’t rely completely on the back up camera as I still tend to look at my surroundings as I back up. I am not even certain if someone was behind me if the warning would even work when the camera is acting up. I have not reported the problem to the dealer yet but I will first thing in the morning. The vehicle has not been inspected yet. The warning messages are described in the first paragraph. Today is first time this has happened. I have a video of this but was not able to attach it.

22’ Kona N DCT Base US spec. 5,600 miles est (2nd Kona) Fuel used: Shell Premium Outside Temp: 76F/Dry-Clear Sky. This is my 2nd Kona N, this is the 4th experience I’ve had with my Kona N’s. Towed the first on Vin# [XXX] to dealer, engine stalled after refueling during a road trip. 6/7k miles. Misfire. No replaced parts, car started acting normal. Then I traded it in for another Kona N in June 22’. The vehicle in normal mode is fine. I believe. Switching from N Mode is where the engine starts misfiring and runs on 3,2cyl puffing out white smoke. Leaving me stranded. The codes all show via car touch screen, and OBD reader/history. All electronics perform properly, including active safety features. I am Hyundai affiliated but I do not know how to relay the message. All of the Kona N/Elantra N/Veloster N DCT. Need software updates. It’s a bug, I honestly think. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Lane Departure,Forward Collision Avoidance1 complaint

Incident #1: Auto Emergency Breaking System sensed false situation and auto braked nearly causing high speed accident. Caused while exiting I-80 West Bound off ramp with two lanes Ramp that exits. I was in the inside lane and there was another vehicle in the outside lane. Assuming the system thought I was going to turn into the outer car and braked suddenly. Incident #2: Lane keeping system, constantly fights me for no known reason. While in Las Vegas on Flamingo Road on Oct. 10, 2022 the system suddenly jerked the car to the left and nearly into a head-on crash. My family is very lucky to be okay. Car has problems when road markings are not consistent or when using reflectors (vs painted lines) or when there are exits. It's safer to leave the system off in my experience.

When I pull up to my driveway, which is on a 45-degree angle from the street for approximately 100 feet, and stop the car with the vehicle brake, take my foot off the brake and leave the transmission in drive, the car sits for approximately 15 seconds and then, without any input, the car will climb the hill. I was curious, so I turn the car around and backed into the driveway, and it did the same thing in reverse. I hate to think that a small child would be sitting in the driveway and the diver didn't see them. My question is would the car keep going and run over the child?

The car turned into a bricked mode 3 times after I fully charged the car to 100%. The car cannot open or start the engine. The battery was dead or drained somehow. I have to jump start the battery and reset the battery terminals in order for it to work again. Now the braking warning light has stayed on after I reset the battery terminals. I think this 2022 Hyundai Kona EV has some electrical issues that Hyundai need to fix or be aware of.

Service Brakes1 complaint

The brakes began feeling less effective the day before because the car crept forward at a light but the driver thought they may have just eased off the brake pedal. The next day during a 45-minute drive to work the brakes felt more ineffective and a dash display warned "Low brake fluid". The Parking brake light was NOT on while driving. Drove the car from work to the local Hyundai dealer in Alexandria, VA a mile away. The dealer refused to look at car at all and said to come back in 18 days. The dealer said no loaner cars were available. Drove the car back to work. On the way home the Parking brake light came on. Got home and saw the Owners Manual says to park the car and not drive it when the Parking Brake light comes on while the parking brake is released. Checked the brake reservoir and it was completely empty. The brake pedal went to floor and the only way to stop the car was to use the Parking Brake. The reservoir was refilled but all fluid was gone in a few hours of driving. The car was towed ten days later to the same dealer after a manager at the dealership got involved. The tow truck driver had to use the parking brake to drive the car out of the parking garage. The dealer advised the problem was a faulty caliper. The Owners Manual claims the car has a "dual diagonal" braking system as required by law but somehow a single leaking caliper resulted in a COMPLETE loss of pedal braking and ALL brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir in a short period of time. Had this happened on a highway instead of city streets this could have been a fatal. THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A "SPLIT" RESERVOIR. It has a separator but the "wall" does NOT go all the way to the top of the reservoir. I believe that when the brakes were used the fluid splashed from the "good" half to the leaking half because the reservoir is not 100% physically separate for the two sets of brakes.
