Below are recalls and complaints reported to NHTSA for the 2020 Hyundai Ioniq. This information is consumer-reported and provided for general informational purposes only. Vehicles like this may qualify under California lemon law depending on their individual repair history.
The following recalls were reported to NHTSA. A recall does not by itself establish that any individual vehicle is defective.
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Kona Electric and 2020 Ioniq Electric vehicles. The lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery may short-circuit.
Reported consequence: An electrical short in the Li-ion battery increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the interim action is complete. Hyundai will notify owners, and as an interim action, owners have the option to follow provided instructions to perform a battery update through the vehicle's infotainment system or request a Hyundai dealer to provide the update. Once parts are available, dealers will inspect the Battery System Assembly (BSA), and replace it if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners were notified of the safety risk, and the interim action, with a letter mailed April 9, 2021. Final owner notification letters were mailed June 17, 2021. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 200.
The following are consumer-reported complaints filed with NHTSA. These are unverified allegations and are not proof that any defect exists.
The horn on my 2020 Hyundai Ioniq has stopped working. I checked the fuses and they are all good. Hyundai currently has several other models with recalls or at least known to fail. Yes my vehicle is available for inspection and no I have not had it looked at yet… dealer wants to keep it for 3-5 days to diagnose and further, given the nature of the issue, I don’t feel I should be responsible for any fees involved in doing so. It poses me a major safety concern as I cannot warn other cars of potential collision etc. Unfortunately, this problem does not have any type of warning message to let you know. I had to find out by trying to use my horn when someone almost hit me. This appears to me as a Hyundai manufacturing issue that also affects the Ionic line.

Car has two horns, both STOPPED working completely about 2 1/2 years ago and were replaced by the Hyundai dealer in Florence, SC. High pitch horn failed again about 1 year ago, and low pitch horn has now failed. Local Hyundai dealership in Pensacola, FL npow wants $800 to replace what should be fully covered. Car now has 75,00 miles so they say it us out of warrenty. But, a safety issue on a known problem (per Hydai frum on line and personal experience) should be fully covered by Hyundai.

On June 10, 2021, when driving from Topeka, KS to Park Ridge, IL, there was a failure in both the Adaptive Cruse Control System as well as the Lane Keeping Assistance System. The ACC system started the car moving forward from a complete stop without my intent and the LKA turned the car to the right striking a semi trailer that was completely stopped. Additionally there was no warning from the Forward Collision Warning system

8-1-2020 HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA LETTER RECEIVED THAT ORIGINAL WINDOW STICKER HAD INCORRECT INFORMATION AND IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH BLIND SPOT AND REAR CROSS TRAFFIC COLLISION AVOIDANCE ASSIST SYSTEMS; HOWEVER THESE VEHCLES ARE EQUIPPED WITH BLIND SPOT AND REAR CROSS TRAFFIC COLLISION WARNING SYSTEMS. HOW MANY OTHER BUYERS WERE MISLED BY THE WINDOW STICKER AND SOLD A CAR WITH MORE EXTENSIVE SAFETY EQUIPMENT THAN WHAT THEY ACTUALLY RECEIVED? SHOULD HYUNDAI RECALL THE VEHICLE TO INSTALL THE DEVICES AS ADVERTISED AND SOLD OR REIMBURSE THE BUYERS FOR THE DIFFERENCE AND THE LESSER VALUE CAR SOLD? MY CAR WAS STATIONARY AND NO MALFUNCTION KNOWN YET, BUT LACK OF ASSIST FUNCTION MAKES THE CAR LESS SAFE THAN REPRESENTED WHEN SOLD TO ME. THE DEFICIENCY, ERROR NOTICE LETTER IS NOT DATED AND DOES NOT OFFER TO CORRECT THE MISREPRESENTATION OR REFUND THE COST OF INSTALLING THIS SYSTEM, AND DOES NOT OFFER TO INSTALL IT AFTER THEIR ERROR.

The Hyundai Ioniq was designed with a dual clutch system for the electric motor and gas motor. This was done to disengage and engage either separately when necessary for low power, regen braking, etc. However, this design heavily impacts the behavior of the brakes and safety of the vehicle overall. When the brakes are applied, the ECU will turn off the gas engine to conserve gas in regen braking mode. Additionally, the ECU will downshift the transmission. Downshifting the transmission and disengaging the gas engine become an issue because conducting both actions removes significant resistance in braking. Causing the vehicle to lurch when the downshift occurs while also increasing stopping distance. This downshift can be felt when braking as both loss of brake power and vehicle lurch. The system also does not account for this brake power loss by increasing brake booster response.

the Hyundai ioniq 5 doesn't turn on its brake lights when you're using single-pedal driving, as shown in this youtube video: https://youtu.be/U0YW7x9U5TQ?t=97 these should be recalled because you can bring the vehicle to a complete stop without the brakes turning on
NHTSA #11523893
This issue is easily repeatable, when braking if you hit a bump (pot hole, etc.) the braking power is greatly reduced & the brake pedal becomes almost impossible to push down to stop the car, making it very hard to stop even when not coming to an abrupt stop.
NHTSA #11432408
The regenerative brake system failed to operate as it normally does, and no indicator lights came on on the dashboard. This unexpected loss of braking force nearly caused me to hit the car in front of me. I had recently disengaged cruise control and was approaching a red light. I pressed my foot on the brake pedal and felt no response from the car. I lifted my foot and pressed again two or three times with no response, neither deceleration nor any change in the regenerative braking meter on the dashboard. I had to press the brake all the way to the floor before the mechanical brakes were activated. This loss of braking power greatly increased my stopping distance and I narrowly avoided hitting the car in front of me. Once the light turned green, I accelerated and tested the brakes again and everything seemed to be working fine, including the regeneration meter. No indicator lights of any kind came on during this incident. This occurred approximately a week ago. I have owned the car for approximately three weeks, and have not experienced any similar issues in the two weeks prior to the incident or in the week since. I have not yet taken it to the dealership as I would not be able to reproduce the issue for them. I will gladly cooperate with any inspection needed to better understand this issue.

I WAS DRIVING ON A 6 LANE RD., NEARING AN INTERSECTION. I WAS IN THE MIDDLE LANE, TRAFFIC ON BOTH SIDES OF ME. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP THE CAR, MY BRAKES FAILED. I ENDED UP HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS LUCKY THAT WE WERE ALL DRIVING AT A VERY SLOW SPEED AN I DID NOT HAVE SERIOUS INJURIES, JUST ONE WEEK OF NECK AND BACK PAIN. THE BRAKES FAILING HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE. MY DAUGHTER WAS AT AN INTERSECTION WITH NO TRAFFIC. THE LIGHT CHANGED TO YELLOW. WHEN SHE TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, THEY FAILED AND SHE HAD TO GO THROUGH THE YELLOW LIGHT. WHEN SHE TRIED OUT THE BRAKES AFTER THAT, THEY WORKED AGAIN. THE CAR HAS ONLY 973 MILES ON IT. WE HAD IT ONLY FOR 6 WEEKS AS A NEW VEHICLE. THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON JULY 15. HYUNDAI CALIFORNIA HEADQUARTERS CALLED US ON THE 20TH OF JULY. THEY CLAIMED, WE HAD CONTACTED THEM, WHICH IS NOT TRUE.THEY REQUESTED THAT NOTHING BE DONE ON THE CAR UNTIL THEY HAD A CHANCE TO INSPECT THE CAR. YESTERDAY (8/12/20) THEY TOLD US THAT IT WOULD TAKE 6 TO 8 WEEKS TO REPAIR THE CAR. THIS IS FISHY, THE CAR WA IN THE CHICAGO AUTO SHOW AND ENDED UP AT OUR DEALER. I BELIEVE THEY SOLD US A BETA MODEL. BUT THEY WILL NOT ADMIT TO ANYTHING. WE HAVE NEVER HAD HEADQUARTERS OF ANY CAR MANUFACTURER GETTING INVOLVED AFTER AN ACCIDENT. MONDAY OUR CAR RENTAL PAYN=MENT BY OUR INSURANCE COMPANY WILL END AND WE WILL NOT HAVE A CAR AVAILABLE. SO FAR HYUNDAI DOES NOT SEEM TO CARE.

The charge controller failed twice and one of the times I was out on a dangerous road where there wasn’t a safe spot to pull over. It was very sketchy.

The traction battery on my Ioniq 2020 went bad after 3 months. The diagnostic panel warned me of an electric issue and the range dropped drastically. The dealer changed the battery no questions asked. My vin wasn't part of the recall. I wonder if the recall should have included a broader range of vehicles.

When the engine is turned off, and the car is not in park, it rolls. When the engine is turned off the car should automatically switch to P to prevent it from rolling. Our car was left in R with the engine off. And instead of switching to P automatically, it just rolled away and hit the neighbors garage.

The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. The contact stated that while idle, releasing the brake and pressing the accelerator, the vehicle would jolt forward before accelerating. The failure would occur intermittently and had become progressively more pronounced. There were no warning lights illuminated. During the most recent occasion, the vehicle jolted forward so aggressively that it caused the contact to have whiplash. The contact had to refrain from work due to the whiplash symptoms sustained, such as neck pain and nausea. The vehicle was taken to the dealer twice, and the dealer was not able to diagnose the cause of the failure. The dealer was able to experience the failure described when inspecting the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and confirmed the vehicle was not covered under warranty or recall. The manufacturer filed a complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

***2020 HYUNDAI IONIQ TURNS ITSELF ON, WITHOUT HUMAN ASSISTANCE OR MODERATION. HUMAN DOES NOT NEED TO BE IN THE CAR FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, MEANING IT COULD OCCUR 24/7, SANS DRIVER, AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE.*** *Months of random electrical odd events. Example: the car does not know it’s off or Not shifting correctly *June 6, 2023 - 8am - I entered the car and got settled. The steering wheel is locked…it was not like that the last time I was in the car. I turned the car on, shifted to reverse, and the steering wheel remained locked. I couldn’t fix it so I decided to get out of the car and call for service. *June 6 2023 - Attempting to leave the car. Put the car in park, set the parking break, turned car off, and opened door to get out. When my left foot touched the pavement the Ioniq turn itself back on. I thought I had messed up but nope. I took several videos. I could not leave the car bc it would NOT STAY SHUT OFF. *June 6, 2023 - Called Hyundai service. They could do nothing but had service drivers out and I would get a call back, meantime I had to stay inside the running car. I kept trying the ignition button to get it to stay off. FINALLY randomly unlocked the steering wheel so I drove to the service center. *June 6, 2023 - Hyundai has had my car for 7 days without being officially written up and service started. I cannot get an update from them and have no loaner. I will be taking an UBER there tomorrow to check in person.

My horn failed and was replaced in March of 2021. It stopped working again in January of 2022. The dealer replaced the horn the first time and another horn is on order with an unknown date of when the part will be available. This is a safety concern for me. I drive in the country and many deer run in the road. There has also been an incident where a child ran infront of my car while in my home city. Not having a horn poses a risk to me and others. I would not expect a car that is less than 2 years old to have a horn go out twice. I have driven 50 years and have never had a horn break. There was no warning prior to horn failure nor do I know how long the horn was broke.

The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 MPH a sudden booming sound occurred near the front passenger’s side of the vehicle. After stopping to inspect the vehicle it was discovered that the front driver’s side wheel well and bumper dislodged and was rubbing against the front passenger’s side wheel. The contact was able to adjust the damaged body part from rubbing against the wheel and continued to drive the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 46,650.

While attempting a slow right turn from a complete stop at an intersection, I heard a loud thunk sound followed by an immediate loss of power steering response. The steering wheel spun freely with little resistance while the front tires did not respond proportionally. I was able to safely pull over. Upon restarting the vehicle it produced an abnormal wheezing sound suggesting additional mechanical stress. At the time of the failure the vehicle had approximately 40,000 miles, which I believe represents a premature failure for a safety-critical steering component. The vehicle was brought to a Hyundai dealership for inspection. The dealer pulled diagnostic fault codes, found none, performed a 20-minute test drive, and returned the vehicle stating they could not find anything wrong. No physical inspection of the steering components was performed. The failure condition — a slow full-lock turn from a complete stop — was never specifically replicated during the dealer's test drive. The problem has not been confirmed or repaired by the dealer. The vehicle is available for inspection. My safety and the safety of other drivers was put at risk by the sudden and unexpected loss of steering control. No warning lights appeared prior to or during the failure.

When approaching a turn, I let off the accelerator but the car didn’t stop accelerating. Instead, it gently kept accelerating. I applied the brakes and the car started slowing down but not at the same rate I was applying brake pressure. Therefore I floored the brakes to try coming to a complete stop. Sadly, the cars ABS system did not engage, half of the car hopped over the curb at about 20 mph. I was able to steer the car back onto the road where it finally came to a stop but acted like it wanted to keep going until full blackout power loss happened. The car was deemed a total loss by my insurance company American Family. Essentially, the vehicle malfunctioned causing the accelerator to stick which caused the car to be harder to control than designed. The car malfunctioned by not engaging the ABS system as well. There is a recall on this exact problem for the 2017-2019 model but not for my 2020 even though it was manufactured during that campaign. It all happened very quickly and I was very lucky this did not involve another vehicle.

The display does not always show reverse camera when backing up. Not often, but does occur. I can use mirrors, etc. Annoying as it is a learned experience with this car, and when reverse camera is not operational it does limit view behind car due to design. I did capture video this time as it isn't first occurrence. I was in parking lot where I could do this without endangering anyone.

The contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Ioniq. The contact stated that while driving 70 MPH with the adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist features activated, the check engine warning light suddenly illuminated and the steering wheel seized causing the driver to lose control of the steering and the vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier. After restarting the vehicle, the check engine warning light was no longer illuminated and the vehicle operated as normal. No injuries were reported and no police report was taken. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 37,859.

Refill Coolant warning light intermittently signals EV battery coolant problem. Hyundai dealer in Fort Wayne, IN, topped off coolant. Andrew service representative was informed of two YouTube videos explaining recall due to defective coolant ASC1 that crystalizes and/or becomes sludgy. Video reported dealer changed old coolant with an upgraded coolant ASC2 number in a Hyundai Ioniq Limited 2020 Electric Vehicle 38 kw like my vehicle. Fort Wayne, Glenbrook Hyundai dealer has very little experience or training with EV vehicles, since they offered to change the engine oil. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUs-YoGTMlw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCt6MEbaXCI are video links apparently from England due to British accent and Chippenham city mentioned in video. USA NHTSA should add this recall to USA Hyundai Ioniq 2020 38 kv EV's. Defective coolant could cause EV battery failure and potential fire due to overheating and electrical short circuits. The Refill Coolant warning light goes off indicating coolant is sufficient, even when no additional coolant was added.

The lane departure keep system has a major firmware bug. When the car is moving along a sweeping right hand turn from the farthest left lane, the vehicle senses that the car is going to cross the lane line to the right and jerks the steering wheel back towards dead center. This throws the vehicle towards the left hand curb. The driver must react quickly to jerk the wheel back to the proper position. This takes a reasonable amount of force that not all drivers may possess. Hyundai dealer service technicians are aware of this issue but can only "detune" the system to make it slightly less sensitive.

While on cruise control when climbing a hill, a warning appears telling me that the EV has failed and that I should stop driving the vehicle. At the time the warning appears the cruise control shuts off and the car slow dramatically. All 5 times this has happened the vehicles behind me have had to slam on their brakes in order to avoid running me over. Once it was a triaxle dump truck, fully loaded, he went off the right side of the road and almost hit the guardrails to avoid the collision. The car has been tested at our dealership (Jenkins Hyundai) and they have confirmed the issue.

I leased the vehicle in 03-2021 and within the first year took the car back to the dealer 3 times for complaint on braking system. The brake pedal would loose pressure and stopping distance would extend further than anticipated. the dealer consistently told me that they could not duplicate the problem. now has gotten to the point that EBP light and HOLD light stay on steady and red Brake light flashes, due to this the smart cruise control and crash avoidance system become inoperable. Recently became aware that this issue is known to Hyundai and they have TSB for this issue, TSB # 23-BR-001H which describes the problem with rear caliper harness contamination with moisture. now that my vehicle has passed the 36K miles warranty, dealer wants to charge about $2000 for repairs. Currently have 39685 miles on the vehicle.

ON 3/27/2020 I PURCHASED A HYUNDAI IONIQ 2020 WHICH ADVERTISED ON THE WINDOW STICKER VEHICLE INCLUDES ADVANCED SAFETY FEATURES BIND SPOT COLLISION AVOIDANCE ASSIST AND REAR CROSS TRAFFIC COLLISION AVOIDANCE ASSIST. UNFORTUNATELY, THE MANUFACTURER NOTIFIED ME ON 8/24/2020 THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT MANUFACTURED AS ADVERTISED. THE FEATURES CAN'T BE ADDED AFTER THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED ME $500 FOR MY INCONVENIENCE WHEN I REQUESTED A VEHICLE BUY-BACK TO REPURCHASE THE LIKE KIND VEHICLE WITH THE INCLUDED SAFETY FEATURES.
