Recalls Reported to NHTSA

The following recalls were reported to NHTSA. A recall does not by itself establish that any individual vehicle is defective.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

NHTSA #24V879000

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Santa Fe HEV, Elantra, Elantra HEV and 2022 Elantra N and Santa Fe PHEV vehicles. Due to a damaged printed circuit board, the rearview camera image may fail to display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."

Reported consequence: A rearview image that does not display reduces the driver's visibility and increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 14, 2025. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 271.

Reported consequence: A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update engine control module software. In addition, dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pump assembly, as necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning September 9, 2024. Some interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed September 3, 2024. The vehicle's "fail-safe" limited-mobility drive mode may be impaired, when prompted by a transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power.

Reported consequence: Loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the transmission, as necessary. Dealers will also update the transmission control unit software. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 10, 2023. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 236.

Reported consequence: An exploding seat belt pretensioner can project metal fragments into the vehicle, strike vehicle occupants, and result in injury.

Remedy: Dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioner(s) with a cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 28, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 229. This recall expands and replaces NHTSA recall numbers 21V-796, 22V-069, 22V-218, and 22V-123 for Accent, Elantra, and Elantra HEV vehicles. Teenage daughter was in seat belt. Laid over a little when she sat back up the seat belt tighten around her waist and would not release. When tried to pull down from top it continue to tighten and lock around abdomen. With every small move it locked up more until there was no choice but you cut the belt because it was cutting off circulation.

Dealer has been unable to repair the recall associated with my car. I’ve been waiting for half a year for it to be repaired and dealer claims they don’t have the part available for it to be repaired. This shouldn’t take that much time.

I received a recall notice for 22V-354 (Hyundai recall 229) on 8/1/2022. The recall states that this is an important safety recall and Hyundai is preparing a remedy, but it’s not ready yet. It states that owners are strongly recommended to park vehicles outside and away from structures. It states that the driver/passenger seat belts can explode and project metal shrapnel into the vehicle occupant compartment. However, the dealership advised they don’t have the parts or personnel to fix it right now and they don’t have any timeline on when it can be repaired either. I need my car (that I just purchased in April 2022) to go to work every day. I don’t have other transportation options available as I drive from client to client and am self employed. I live in a high traffic area and am scared that my seat belt will kill or maim me if involved in an accident. I’m sure Hyundai wouldn’t forgive my payments until this is fixed, but they just expect me to drive an unsafe vehicle until “whenever” this can be fixed?? Please require a deadline for them to fix this or forgive my loan so I can purchase another vehicle. This is not okay. We pay taxes and expect safety and regulations. Please contact me with a real solution.

NHTSA #11476954

I was sent a letter in July regarding the current recall for the safety belt pretensioner and how it may deploy in a faulty manner and injure passengers. I received another letter today that Hyundai is "preparing to implement the safety recall remedy." It has now been almost two months and there is still no concrete plan being reported to me. I think this is an unreasonable amount of time to be waiting for a remedy to a safety problem while I drive a car that could be potentially dangerous.

I was advised of the current recall on my new 22 Elantra. I took my vehicle to the Hyundai dealership where it was purchased (Cookeville) from a mere few months ago. I advised I needed the recall on the seat belts fixed. I was then told that they wouldn't be able to fix this recall for awhile (over a month) because they needed to fix the cars currently on the lot. THE UNSOLD CARS THAT ARE JUST SITTING THERE. Not only is this reckless, it shows a complete disregard to my safety and others that may be in the vehicle or near it if something were to happen while being driven. Mind you, I bought this car completely new from them and have zero issues up until this point. I feel that my vehicle should be given priority over a vehicle that isn't even sold. The Cookeville Hyundai is prioritizing money over public safety and I will as though it should be addressed immediately.

Forward Collision Avoidance11 complaints

I am reporting a safety-related defect involving the vehicle’s infotainment and forward safety systems. When this occurs, the vehicle also shows a “Check Forward Safety System” warning message. Diagnostic trouble code C162078 is triggered, indicating a front radar out of alignment. As a result, critical safety features such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Smart Cruise Control, and other radar-based driver assistance systems are disabled. This issue creates a significant safety risk because the driver is not alerted to potential forward collisions and cannot rely on active safety systems. The blank infotainment screen also prevents access to vehicle settings, warnings, and camera functions. In South Korea, this same defect has resulted in an official recall and free front radar replacement and calibration. However, in the United States, customers are not covered under a recall and are required to pay out of pocket for radar realignment or replacement, even though the issue is identical and a lot of time the issue came back 3 months later and customer have to pay out of pocket once again to fix the same issue. Many owners report receiving official recall notices in other markets, while U.S. owners must independently diagnose the issue. Dealers often state that the problem may be caused by radar misalignment after a software update or system fault. In some cases, cleaning or recalibration temporarily resolves the issue, but in other cases, full radar replacement is required. This inconsistent treatment places U.S. consumers at a financial disadvantage and allows a known safety defect to remain unresolved. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this defect and require the manufacturer to issue a U.S. recall with free repair, calibration, or replacement, consistent with actions already taken in other countries.

NHTSA #11705871

The emergency braking system activated and began slowing down the car on two occasions: sometime in the fall of 2022 and on 09/01/2025. In both instances, I was driving about 65mpg on an interstate. There were no cars in front of me to cause the system to activate.

While traveling on a bridge with a very steep incline, the forward safety system light came on, which disabled the cruise control. We could not resolve the warning light issue, despite taking it thru a car wash, hoping that the sensor was just dirty. The warning light remained on for several days, then went away. One month later, on a sunny, dry day, the light returned. I made an appt at the local dealership, where the car was purchased and they told me that the front sensor was out of alignment and I most likely hit something, which I did not. $370 for the alignment and since they assumed I hit something, it voided the warranty.

NHTSA #11622468

Check foward safety feature dashlight came on while driving, my blue link app told me the DTC c162078 chassis alignment failed front radar On Jun 4th 2024 while in park and idle my steering wheel kept going side to side, I recorded it not sure if that had something to do with this happening on July 2, 2024 and my safety is in jeopardy I feel due to the forward collision not working, smart cruise control not working, made appointment at hyundai dealership and I showed them the code bluelink told me to show them and they said they have to diagnose car themselves and the cost would be $169.99. I had to call hyundai customer care and get a claim number because dealership said they had to charge me. Two days i waited for dealership to call me the lady stated to let dealership know to waive diagnostic fee, I was told they would waive fee but I would need to pay $497 for part and $500 for labor which includes labor and recalibration, I told them I am financing a car I don't have safety features for, so I believe this should be listed as a recall or it should be fixed free of charge, being this is no fault of my own. No accident, didn't hit anything , I was driving at night and smooth roads. Dealership wanted me to lie to my insurance company and say I hit pothole. I told her no because that would be a lie.

NHTSA #11601841

2 times on freeway and 1 time on city streets, no vehicles within 100 yards and vehicle came to complete random stop. On freeway, tires skidded it was so abrupt and had neck pains for a few days thereafter. One time also on city street, corrective steering pulled shaply to right almost causing accident. Called hyundai and the representative had no advice or care to even intake the issue for records.not a safe vehicle especially since the engine has already failed and the ac has been replaced. It's now a frankenstein death trap being a danger to myself and others but they do not care.

Allegedly reported: 1 injury (as reported to NHTSA). NHTSA #11569635

Automatic emergency braking appears to be getting falsely triggered. This happens when I am pulling out of parking spaces, even with nothing besides or behind me. This also happens when cars in lanes beside me pass me.

NHTSA #11552360

NHTSA #11568598

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that on two separate occasions, while driving with cruise control activated, the vehicle came to an abrupt stop. There was no warning light illuminated. After each failure, the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed; however, no fault was found with the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided a case number. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 5,500.

NHTSA #11502360

For the past 2 years my Forward Safety System light on has been on in my car. It has turned off and back on repeatedly but has now been on for about 6 months. Hyundai dealerships are estimated a week or two of labor to fix which is extremely expensive for rental cars and outlandish that I bought this brand new and it is already giving me issues. No damage has been had to the car in any way.

NHTSA #11639341

On 2/26/2022, while driving East bound 134 at night. AEB of my 2022 Elantra kicked in. The first time AEB kicked in hard and I lost control of the car for a split moment. The warning sounds as the AEB activated and I swerved slightly (within my lane). This happened while I still had sufficient safety distance with the car in front of me and before the car in front of me began braking. The second time this happened was 10 minutes later, when there were no cars next to, behind, or in front of me. Same thing happened where AEB suddenly activated under normal driving condition. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This sudden braking puts me, my passenger, and car(s) behind me at risk. Potentially this puts cars next to me at risk too. The problem is currently under inspection by the dealer at Cardinale Hyundai in Corona, CA. Dealer so far has notified me the problem was unable to be reproduced and did not find any system or parts out of the ordinary. The vehicle has not been inspected by the police or insurance. This is a brand new 2022 model Elantra purchased on 12/31/2021. There were no prior warnings lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the failure. Dash cam video clips of both incidents are available upon request.

I was pulling into a parking spot, moving very slowly, and the car suddenly accelerated. I’m not sure if it was the brakes only because I was slowed down and preparing to stop. I was lucky that I only went into a PVC fence and no one was injured. There was no indication of any sort of a possible problem. No one looked at it because I had no idea that that could be done, and I wouldn’t know where to go.

NHTSA #11685170

There is an issue with mice getting into the front of the car. It smells like urine and is unsafe to breathe. I have cleaned out air filters monthly and find nests every time and have even found a dead mice. My car has nothing that would attract the mice. I have tried everything and spent so much money to prevent this from happening. Apparently with this car it is a known issue, and has not been fixed.

NHTSA #11709302

On six seperate occasions since I purchased new my traction control light flashed and the vehicle jerked and would lose power. It would then gain and lose power again. Four of these occurances happened in the last few months. It would not subside until I stopped the car. I took the car to the dealer three times and they said they could not duplicate the problem. They also said there were no codes in the car system history that showed any problems. I contacted Hyundai USA for advice. They said to bring it into the dealer and ask them to inspect the car again. That was visit number 3 and the results were the same. The person from Hundai said she would let her supervisor know of my concern for the vehicle safety but I never heard back.

The horn has malfunctioned. It stopped working today for the first 10-15 minutes of my driving and this poses as a safety concern as I was not able to communicate with other drivers. After 15 minutes the horn started picking up but it sounded faint. It does not sound nearly as loud or the same sound. I am worried the horn will stop working again. It is not making the same noises it usually does. Currently there are no warning lights on the dash regarding this. I am also seeing in social media communities that other Elantra drivers are facing the exact same issue and this poses a safety concern. If the horn stops working while driving in the highway or even local roads and we are unable to connivance with drivers it can cause or fail to prevent accidents.

Car losing coolant and hyundai refuse to fix it says couldn’t find leak

NHTSA #11537305

I attempted to make a complete stop at a stop sign. The brakes wouldn't stop the car. The car kept driving, had to swerve several times. I attempted to put the car in neutral didn't work, tried to put it in park didn't work. It abruptly stopped in the middle of the road eventually. Several lights displayed on the dashboard. Scariest moment of my life! Hyundai needs to fix this problem! I called the dealership to speak with the service manger ART at World Hyundai in Matteson, IL, left several messages no call back! Final call, I was told that ART couldn't come to the phone, I could drop off the car, but they have no loaner to give me in the meantime.

NHTSA #11463681

I attempted to accelerate while on my way to work and the vehicle would not start the engine. With the pedal pressed all the way to the floor, I was barely accelerating. Had this happened when I was pulling into traffic or otherwise had to accelerate quickly to avoid an incident, it could have been extremely dangerous. The battery almost completely died before I was able to pull over, but turning off the vehicle and starting it again returned the vehicle to normal. The vehicle has not yet been inspected concerning this issue. There were no warning lights to indicate there was any sort of fault. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request.

I didn't know the horn wasn't working. I was driving and a vehicle almost backed into me on the drivers door. I couldn't warn them that I was behind them I was fortunate to move before they backed into me. I haven't taken the car to the dealer. I searched on the internet to see if this was an isolated incident and I found hundreds of incidents of people reporting faulty horns on Hyundai vehicles. This should be a safety and a recall issue/

I’ve gotten my horn replaced for the second straight time in the past year. Currently at the dealership and service advisors here at West Herr Hyundai in Williamsville state many horns go bad as of today they’ve replaced 7 of them.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that when his son started the vehicle, the instrument panel failed to illuminate. Additionally, while driving approximately 10 MPH, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the battery needed to be replaced. The battery was replaced, and the vehicle was repaired. The contact tested the battery with a voltage reader the voltage and the voltage had gone from 12.8V to 12.4V within five days. The contact was concerned that the battery had lost voltage within five days. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 32,000.

When driving the vehicle for more than 10 minutes, the dash will display " Check hybrid system. Stop safely" the vehicle will completely stall and will not allow you accelerate forcing you to pull over, turn the vehicle off and reset the 12v battery. Once this is done the car will turn on normally as if nothing happened. This issue happens randomly and without a warning. It was occurred on the highway many times while traveling 60+ mph and I had to stop abruptly and was forced to slow down drastically and pull over on a median and reset the car. Another incident, I was in the middle of intersection about to turn left and my vehicle stalled out in the middle of oncoming traffic causing cars to have to swerve to avoid me in the middle of the intersection. Also since it occurs very randomly, the car stalling out and it not allowing you to accelerate it poses a risk to drivers that are not paying attention and could cause a rear end accident. I have taken my car to the dealership twice for this issue and they have not been able to diagnose the issue but can see the history of the codes the car gave when it occurs. There was a recall and I took my vehicle so they can perform software update and the issue was still occurring despite the update. This has been occurring since late 2023. I purchased the car in 2021/2022.

NHTSA #11515437

Car horn failure. Almost had an accident. Tried to honk the horn, so that i could warn the other driver coming toward my lane, nothing, no sound at all. I swerved my car out of the way... it could have been bad if there was a car next to me. Took the car to the dealership. Verdict, they said the car horn needs to be changed. Nope, did not notice any warnings that the horn gonna malfunction. It is messed up. I hardly use the horn and yet it is broken. Isn't the horn supposed to last a while?

NHTSA #11511262

In responding to a districted driver that almost backed into my car, I hit the horn. The horn sounded for a second and then stopped working. In researching online and speaking with a local dealer, there are numerous reports of the horns failing. The dealer even said that the items to repair them are back ordered.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. Additionally, there was an abnormally strong gasoline odor coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, the vehicle was not formally diagnosed. The contact was informed that there was a crack in the engine, causing a leak. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, but it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 23,825.

The contact owned a 2022 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the contact stated that a relative had entered the residence and informed the contact that the vehicle was on fire. The vehicle was unoccupied. The contact stated that no warning lights were illuminated prior to the failure. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. A fire report was filed. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle was parked five minutes prior to the failure. The vehicle was towed to a local tow yard. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The contact was advised to have the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

NHTSA #11721407

Description of Incident: The vehicle is experiencing significant engine oil dilution by gasoline. Upon inspection of the dipstick, the oil level is consistently found to be well above the "Full" mark, and the oil emits a strong, pungent odor of raw fuel. This indicates that unburnt gasoline is bypassing the piston rings and entering the crankcase during normal operation, particularly in colder temperatures or during hybrid engine cycling. Safety Risk: The dilution of engine oil with fuel significantly reduces the oil's viscosity and lubricating properties. This creates a high risk of premature engine wear, rod bearing failure, and sudden engine seizure or stalling while the vehicle is in motion. A sudden loss of motive power at highway speeds poses a severe crash hazard to myself and other motorists. Attempts to Correct: I have noted that similar Hyundai models using the 1.6L platform (such as the Tucson Hybrid via TSB 23-EE-002H) have received software updates to address this specific issue. However, when contacting the dealer regarding my Elantra Hybrid, I was informed that no such software fix or service campaign currently exists for the CN7 Elantra model, leaving the safety defect unaddressed. Expected Resolution: Hyundai should be required to issue a recall or technical service bulletin for the Elantra Hybrid to update the Engine Control Unit (ECU) logic, ensuring the engine reaches and maintains temperatures necessary to prevent fuel accumulation in the oil.

Our Jiffy Lube service center performed and oil change to Hyundai Elantra. A day later customer came back with vehicle being towed. Customer stated vehicle seized for no reason. Our technicians inspected vehicle engine oil and found it to be at proper level, but vehicle was completely dead as if no power at all. Customer towed vehicle to nearest dealership, dealership states vehicle seized due to oil starvation due to improper placement of oil filter. This is a canister filter. There is no right or wrong way to place a canister oil filter. Our service center is left with a $9855 bill. At the beginning of December 2022 (a year after I purchased my brand new vehicle), two of the ignition coils misfired. I was driving down the highway and suddenly my car lost power and then cut off. I was able to start it again, but it would not drive faster than 25mph and would randomly lose power again. On December 7th, 2022 I took it to Hyundai and they were able to replace the two coil packs under the warranty. However, they didn't change the spark plugs (unbeknownst to me), a few months later I decided to change my spark plugs (which had to be purchased directly from Hyundai for $120), all of my spark plugs were completely burnt and looked terrible. There was a caution signal on my dash board and after running an OBD code scanner, one of the error codes that were triggered were "P030400".

My check engine light came on before the car reached 700 miles on it. The car acts like it does not want to accelerate, but the RPMS go up- I have cruised at 60mph (and at 35) and tried to move over to a different lane to avoid upcoming vehicles and the car won’t accelerate. Merging onto the freeway, again I’m gaining speed, and then the car quits accelerating. I have had the accelerator all the way down to the floor and still no power. Periodically the check engine light will shut off. I have had the check engine looked at with the reader and the code that comes on is P2261 Turbo/super charge

While driving on the freeway at 65MPH, my car suddenly displayed a "Check Hybrid System , Stop Safely" warning. The vehicle rapidly decelerated to 20MPH and would not respond to acceleration, despite pressing the pedal. This created a dangerous situation for my family, as we were forced to pull over abruptly on the side of the freeway. I had to reset the battery system before the car would restart. Alarmingly, this issue happened twice on same day on [XXX]. I have since contacted the dealership and informed about the problem. The dealership (Larry Miller Hyundai Peoria - 85382) took my car to address the issue on Feb 28th Feb 2025 and performed a HCU software update and informed me that there was a recall and assured me that the problem shouldn't happen again. However on [XXX], the same problem resurfaced. While stopped at a signal, the car once again displayed "Check Hybrid System , stop Safely" and became unresponsive to acceleration. I had to pull over and reset the battery system to get the car moving again. This recurring issue is not only frustrating but becoming increasingly dangerous. I now drive with constant anxiety, unsure when or where the car might suddenly stop again. This ongoing safety risk is unacceptable, especially a supposed fix was applied. Twice with this 2022 Hyundai Elantra a rabbit has chewed partially through a wire to the transmission. Some Soy based coating that Hyundai uses is delicious to rabbits, then they partially chew through the wire, resulting in power and transmission issues during operation, including revving engine, failure to change gears, and unable to reverse. These wires need better protection as being chewed on causes a safety issue while driving before a check engine light comes on.

Service Brakes,Forward Collision Avoidance4 complaints

My vehicle experienced a sudden and complete brake assist failure, including the emergency brake. I was unable to stop the vehicle, which directly resulted in a collision. Prior to the crash, the car showed no warning lights. After the accident, I had the vehicle inspected at the Hyundai dealership. The dealership stated they could not reproduce the failure and “found no issues,” which contradicts the symptoms. Since the crash, I discovered two Hyundai Technical Service Bulletins that directly match the failure I experienced: TSB 23-01-036H-1 (Relates to HECU/Electronic Parking Brake failure) TSB addressing DTC C1620 (Relates to FCA Sensor/Automatic Braking malfunction) These TSBs relate to brake assist malfunction, emergency brake concerns, and similar stopping failures. The dealership did not disclose these TSBs, did not apply the corrective procedures, and cleared the car as having “no defects.” The dealership wrote “could not reproduce concern” and “no problems found,” despite the vehicle having just been in a brake-failure crash. This brake failure created a major safety risk with potential for severe injury or fatality. I am reporting this because the defect appears unresolved, the dealership denied it, and the TSBs show Hyundai is aware of brake-related issues. I request that NHTSA investigate this brake-system failure as part of a potential manufacturer safety defect. The vehicle is currently secured at the dealership (Lithia Hyundai, Las Vegas) and is available for inspection upon request by NHTSA investigators.

It was very scary and not provoked as this could cause a very severe accident if not fixed.

When I come to a stop the nose doesn't nose drop. Took them a while at the shop to agree something was wrong, they had to vehicle for 2 months cut the rotors, a week later it's doing the same thing. So now it's easier to calipers hanging up heating up the rotors but they say I'm running out of warranty on it when it started I noticed it 2,000 miles and I'm reaching 10,000 now and they say the brakes run out at 12,000 even though they had my vehicle for 2 months just to cut the rotors.

I bought my brand new 2022 Elantra in July of 2021, the only problem I have experienced is the brakes make a sort of wailing noise. It's not a screeching noise as if the brakes need to be changed or that the rotors are worn or brake pads are low. It is not a sound I've heard brake make before and it typically makes the sound when in reverse and slow speeds. I was a mechanic in the United States Air Force for 16 year so I know a lot about mechanical issues so a year old car certainly shouldn't be making these kinds of sounds.

Vehicle Speed Control3 complaints

Sometimes when the cruise control is turned on the car starts the cruise setting at 110mph and then starts accelerating the vehicle to that speed. It does not allow the mph setting to be turned down using the controls on the steering wheel, the only way to take it out of the stuck 110 mph setting is by turning cruise control off or braking. This situation happens rarely but does occur with only the cruise control being turned on, without any further prompt. I have a video of the occurance but the website does not allow me to upload a video.

NHTSA #11640896

Issue: manually setting cruise control to current speed (say 55mph) sets the cruise to 110mph . This has happened more than 10 times in 2 years of my ownership. This happens randomly and not possible to reproduced on-command. The dealers have refused to note this info and send it to Hyundai for investigation. Car accelerating to 110mph all of a sudden while you expect it to stay at your current speed can make one loose control of the vehicle, drive off the road if this happens near a sharp bend and potentially hitting other cars. This issue has definitely put the safety of me and other were put at risk. I believe this is a software issue and the dealers cant diagnose this on the spot. Hyundai does not seem to collect such non-reproducible complaints on their end which is really irresponsible.

NHTSA #11589642

The Cruise Control will automatically set itself to either 20mph or 120mph when engaging it as usual. This happens with no common circumstances that I can see, but as it has happened over 10 times and I have only had the brand new car since Aug 31 2022 and the dealership does not seem concerned about it, I though I should report it to you. It HAS put both myself and others at risk, as the first time it happened, the car began to accelerate as fast as possible and the digital readout on the dashboard had the Cruise Control set for 120 mph and I almost ran into the car ahead of me. I have taken it to Schomp Hyundai in Aurora, CO and they were unable to reproduce the issue and no codes came up, with the exception of the LKA, which they did not deem a problem. This happens regularly and the only recourse is to pull over and restart the car. This first occurred around 20,000 miles and continues to happen without any rhyme or reason and makes me feel unsafe in my first brand new car. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope if this is happening to others, that Hyundai will be made aware of it and remedy the problem before someone get seriously hurt.

Hired a local tire shop to install winter tires on a second set of wheels, with a second set of TPMS sensors. Later, I discovered the car was not picking up the sensors, but it also failed to illuminate the TPMS sensor alert. When I took it back to the tire shop, they checked the TPMS with their own sensors and said they were working fine, so they didn't know why the car didn't detect them. I called my Hyundai dealer, and they said that aftermarket TPMS often don't work, and I have to use Hyundai-approved TPMS. This is fine, but the owner's manual ought to say so. I checked the owner's manual, and it doesn't say that only Hyundai-approved TPMS can be used. The dealer replied that Hyundai doesn't like people installing aftermarket parts. I replied that installing winter tires is not usually considered an aftermarket modification, and a person shouldn't be inhibited from installing winter tires. So all I ask is that the owners manual should make this clear. In the section on TPMS, it should say that only Hyundai-approved TPMS sensors should be used, or else it should say that if the driver installs a second set of wheels with winter tires, that this installation should be done by a Hyundai dealer and not by another tire shop. Of course, the owner could install the winter tires on the factory wheels with the factory TPMS. But this would mean that every season, the all-season and winter tires would be swapped and re-mounted and re-balanced, which is unnecessary. It is standard practice to buy a second set of wheels and TPMS sensors to make seasonal tire changeover easier. Since installing winter tires on a second set of wheels is a routine practice, and not usually considered an aftermarket modification, therefore, if this car has special TPMS requirements, they should be indicated in the manual.

Vehicle: 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Safety Complaint: While driving on the highway, my 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid displayed a warning message stating “Check Hybrid System. Stop Safely.” Immediately after the warning appeared, the vehicle lost power and acceleration. The car entered a reduced-power mode, making it difficult and unsafe to maintain traffic speed. The warning instructed me to stop the vehicle immediately. This occurred while I was traveling at highway speeds, creating a dangerous situation for myself, my passengers, and other drivers. The sudden loss of power could easily result in a rear-end collision or other serious accident because the vehicle is unable to accelerate normally and traffic may not have enough time to react. My vehicle currently has approximately 69,000 miles and is within Hyundai’s hybrid system warranty period. My Hyundai Elantra hybrid has had the horn and front radar go out 3 times. It will eventually start working again. Electrical System,Engine,Fuel/Propulsion System1 complaint

Vehicle: 2022 Hyundai N Line Mileage at Initial Incident: ~17,000 miles Components Involved: Engine and Engine Cooling; Exhaust System / Emissions; Air Bags (SRS) I am submitting this complaint to document unresolved emissions system and Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) safety concerns involving my 2022 Hyundai N Line, as well as the manufacturer’s refusal to ensure proper diagnosis and corrective action following a documented dealer service error and subsequent warranty repair. At approximately 17,000 miles, a Hyundai-authorized dealership failed to reinstall an engine oil seal during a routine oil change. This error caused rapid engine oil loss at highway speed, activation of the oil warning system, and oil discharge onto the roadway. The incident is documented in Hyundai service records and is not disputed. Sudden oil-loss events of this nature are known to cause latent or progressive damage to internal engine components and federally regulated emissions systems, even when immediate engine failure does not occur. Despite proper maintenance after this incident, the vehicle subsequently set DTC P0420 (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold – Bank 1) at a mileage far below expected durability. Hyundai replaced the catalytic converter under warranty. I requested diagnostic data, inspection findings, and documentation supporting the repair, but the dealership refused to provide anything beyond a basic repair invoice. Immediately following this Hyundai-authorized warranty repair, the vehicle developed a new drivability defect, specifically hesitation during acceleration, which was not present prior to the catalytic converter replacement. This indicates a post-repair nonconformity and raises concern that emissions-related components may not have been fully repaired or that additional systems were affected during the warranty repair process. This 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid poses an imminent fire and safety hazard due to catastrophic high-voltage system failures. On December 11, 2025 (Mileage: 54,527), the vehicle displayed a "Check Hybrid System" warning. The dealership diagnosed a swollen 12V battery and, critically, a melted power relay assembly and melted power cable. This indicates extreme thermal overload. The dealer stated they could not repair it independently and deferred to the Hyundai Engineering Team. This is the second major high-voltage failure. On March 23, 2024 (Mileage: 34,276), the vehicle suffered a total electrical blackout while driving at highway speeds at night. The vehicle lost all motive power, interior lights, and hazard flashers, leaving the car invisible in a high-speed lane. The high-voltage battery was replaced in April 2024, yet the system has failed again with melted wiring less than 20 months later. Despite a previous recall performed in August 2024 (Campaign 9B4 - BMS Software Update for 12V Battery Over Voltage), the electrical system remains unstable. The vehicle currently exhibits signs of thermal runaway. I have been informed by the dealer on Dec 16, 2025, that the wiring has melted, yet they initially refused to provide a repair order documenting these specific findings. This vehicle is a fire risk and a threat to public safety. I am requesting assistance in having this vehicle removed from the road immediately as it constitutes a public safety hazard.

On [XXX] and [XXX], while driving at approximately 50 MPH, my vehicle experienced a sudden and complete loss of power, presenting an immediate safety hazard. The incident unfolded as follows: Without warning, the car emitted an alarming sound from the cabin. Simultaneously, a message appeared on the dashboard stating "Check Hybrid System" and instructing me to "Pull Over Safely." This was the first and only warning; there were no prior indications or symptoms of any problem before this sudden failure. Immediately upon this warning, the vehicle experienced a total loss of power. The component that failed appears to be the hybrid system itself, leading to a complete electrical system shutdown. The vehicle is currently available for inspection upon request. After safely pulling over and turning off the car, all electrical functions ceased. This included essential safety features such as hazard lights, rendering the vehicle completely inoperable and "electrically dead." My safety and the safety of other motorists were severely put at risk due to the sudden and complete loss of propulsion and all electrical systems (including safety lights) while the vehicle was in motion. This left the vehicle vulnerable and invisible to other traffic, particularly concerning if this occurred on a highway or at night, as it creates a high risk for rear-end collisions or other accidents. I have personal video documentation of this incident, which clearly shows the dashboard warnings and the vehicle's subsequent electrical failure. I am prepared to share this video upon request. Following this alarming event, I took my vehicle to the Wolfchase Dealership in Memphis on May 16 2025. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by the dealership. Despite their inspection, the dealership claimed they could not find any issue, stating that "no system of record is recording such code in the vehicle. Driving on interstate at 70mph. Multiple, five or six, warnings pop up in rapid succession mostly dealing with the safety features such as distance to car in front, adaptive speed control, lane keeping. The last one was hybrid system - safely stop. The car then immediately lost all acceleration power leaving us coasting. This all happened within a few seconds. Terrifying. Luckily we had space to get over quickly. 30 miles sooner we would have been in downtown Jacksonville with no place to maneuver. Extremely dangerous. A few seconds warning then nothing. Turned the vehicle off as soon as we stopped and car was completely dead, no electrical power to anything, including flashers. Not sure how you can’t have flashers on a hybrid. Basically no warning to no power at highway speeds and then no flashers. Something is seriously wrong with this.

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Blue intermittently displays Check Hybrid System Stop Safety in instrument cluster screen, which stops the car from driving in either smart or normal. This happens on the roads and highways. This is very unsafe because at high speed when this happens you could easily get rear-ended because the car drops its speed and cannot accelerate any faster than 30 miles per hour and then it degrades to 20 miles per hour until I can find a safe place to park and turn off the car to do the reset to be able to drive again. This happens because the 12-volt lithium battery is not providing an acceptable amount of charge to the hybrid battery. This was also confirmed when I took the battery to get tested and it failed the test. The next part that is unsafe, is replacing the low 12-volt lithium battery, because it is connected to a high voltage 240-volt lithium-ion polymer battery; there a normal person cannot simply replace it. You have to know electronics to make sure you do not get electrocuted. In addition, it takes hours to take out the battery and then it’s hard to find to purchase. I feel Hyundai makes this process difficult as after spending hours to screw it out, you cannot locate the item anywhere. When I spoke to the Hyundai parts person, they could not locate it until I actually brought in the battery. The 12-volt lithium battery was nonrefundable and cost twice as much ($545.92) as I saw online, as low as $282 once I obtain the part number from the Hyundai order, which again is nonrefundable. I feel they make sure this cannot be found to force you to come to them to buy the battery, because all the labels or characters on the battery were not able to locatable. This was proven by me emailing the battery images to the parts person who was trying to find it, but could not until I bring in the actual battery. I was also told it is a special order and that they do not keep them onsite and have to be ordered and wait 7 to 10 days(pdf attach)

I had just drove back home from work and I was driving to pick up my child from his basketball game. I was able to pull out of my driveway and get through two stop signs before I came to a third and needed to make a left hand turn. I stopped and let the cars from the highway pass until it was my turn to go. I was proceeding through the sign and started to turn and in the middle of the turn my vehicle cuts off acceleration and stops moving in the middle of the street and turn. No lights. No warning. Just loses power. I pressed the gas and my rpm’s just reved extremely high. I couldn’t move out of the middle of the street. I pressed the gas again and the car started moving approximately 5-10 mph. Luckily the car driving by didn’t hit me as I was sitting in the middle of the road. I finally got to the side of the road and put the vehicle into park for a couple minutes and tried to take off again. I couldn’t go faster than 5mph at this time. I had to drive back home and by the time I got back I had lost reverse capabilities. Dealer said no recalls and mechanics said not much they can do because there isn’t a code or light on for them to check. I just have a new car that doesn’t drive or go into reverse. I’m going to the original dealer to see if they can help now. I believe this is possibly the transmission but I am not sure.

Intermittently while driving the vehicle will suddenly engage the traction control (TC)/electronic stability control (ESC). The light flashes for a short period (probably no more than a couple of seconds) and the car slightly jerks to the right. A loud noise is heard when this happens and the brake pedal shakes. Then the light will stop flashing and the car will begin operating normally again. Typically, the problem will reoccur shortly after it happens. I took the car to a dealer, and the dealer was unable to replicate the problem. The service manager stated that there were no codes and no history, and without a code the problem could not be diagnosed. This problem occurred multiple times over the last few months.

We were on our way home from the beach on [XXX]. Coming through Birmingham on [XXX] in the far left (fast) lane traveling 78-80 mph with traffic flow, the car starts sounding a loud alarm with red flashing lights on the dashboard. The notification flashing said to “Check Hybrid system HEV BATTERY, Stop safely”. The car began to power down with no acceleration. I was unable to get across to the far-right lane to pull over, we had to just squeeze in between the concrete barrier and the cars flying by. Not to mention no flashers – nothing. The car is DEAD. Horn has failed twice. The first time it was taken to the dealership and “fixed” - now it has failed again. The second issue is that the car accelerates on its own, both at a high and low rate of speed. While traveling at approximately 60 mph on multiple occasions, when the engine transitions from the electric motor to the gas engine, it will suddenly rapidly accelerate without any additional pressure on the gas pedal. While braking at a low rate of speed, the car seems to fight the brakes and will accelerate instead, propelling the car forward. This has almost caused multiple accidents. At the first occasion (Mar 2023), the dealer did a “transmission relearn” which mostly fixed the issue, but it has aggressively returned only 3 months later (one week ago) and is extremely dangerous. While trying to move to the side of the road and stop the car, the car continues the stop-go jerking/propelling forward and is nearly uncontrollable. The vehicle is currently at the dealership again and has not been diagnosed. On the first occasion they claimed they could not reproduce the issue. There is an open case with Hyundai regarding this. I have had to replace my windshield from debris twice this year and have a crack filled in today. One small rock can make a crack and usually it takes a while for spidering to occur, but the Hyundai Elantra windshields are so temperature sensitive and must be super thin that over the course of one day in colder (below 50° F) and hotter (above 90° F) spidering occurs in a matter of hours. It is both a huge inconvenience to customers and a safety issue. Hyundai appear to have settled class actions on their faulty windshields in the past so I’m not surprised that this is an issue, but I want more to be done. Exterior Lighting,Lane Departure1 complaint

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra Blue is Hyundai's entry level hybrid model, and after purchasing it about a month ago, we started experiencing 'near misses' while changing lanes and using the blinkers. While other models have a visible side mounted blinker on the right and left mirrors, they removed this important feature from the entry level model. This means there is no visible blinker on the side of the vehicle. While many vehicles have a blinker mounted on the front and rear of the vehicle with a reflector that wraps around to the side to give some visibility, Hyundai opted for small blinker lamps only visible directly at the front or rear of the vehicle. We have recorded a video at night showing the car with it's blinkers on as viewed from the side, and the only way to see that the blinkers are on is from the reflection on other surfaces. We actually tried the blinker in the daytime, and it is completely invisible when the blinker is on. The vehicle does have a blind spot warning that shows the driver when someone is in the next lane, which has been helpful. However, on a three lane freeway, we have experienced the issue where we are changing lanes at the same time as a car in the far lane, and the blind spot warning doesn't register the other vehicle until too late. Thankfully, all we've experienced so far is honking from other drivers, but we are very concerned that this may lead to an accident. I contacted Hyundai Consumer Affairs, who directed us to take the vehicle in to a dealership. When we took the vehicle in, the Hyundai Dealer rep recognized the issue, but said there was nothing they could do to take care of it since it was a design issue. We let Hyundai Consumer Affairs know what the dealership said, and they said "unfortunately the dealership would be the one to assist in the blinkers on the side mirrors. If the dealership is stating that there is nothing they can do unfortunately this would mean that your vehicle did not come equip".

During the summer, I used to get some rattling on my new Elantra right after beginning to drive, after a long interval of parking under the sun. But once the car cooled down due to the A/C, the rattling would disappear. I never bothered to find the exact source of rattling because it used to last only a couple of minutes. Now in the winter, something in the passenger side starts rattling every time I go on a bump! So I took the car to the dealership following a whole week of consistent rattling. They said the noise is coming from somewhere in the dashboard and it is likely due to the misalignment caused by the shrinking of plastic in the cold. They said I could leave the car with them for 2-3 days and they could open up the dashboard and find the exact source of the noise. However, the disclaimer was that opening up the dashboard could actually introduce more rattle after it was assembled back, because the dashboard plastic parts are not precisely machined. Also, if the cause of the rattle was not found to be a manufacturer defect, I would have to pay diagnosis fee as well as the price of any broken parts that needed replacement, along with the labor charge to replace it. What's the point of warranty then?
