Complaints Filed with NHTSA

The following are consumer-reported complaints filed with NHTSA. These are unverified allegations and are not proof that any defect exists.

Power Train52 complaints

There have been multiple times when I’m driving on the highway, at highway speeds, and the expedition will stall when shifting gears. There will be a moment when it sounds like the vehicle is in neutral, a loud clunking sound will be heard, and then it jerks into the gear it should be in. This has happened to me on numerous occasions, even happening at lower rates of speed, like when I’m in town and accelerating after being at a stop light.

NHTSA #11743857

Transmission failed at approximately 110,000. Prior to there were episodes of hesitation during acceleration. Transmission was replaced at ford dealership with new parts. This transmission is not available for inspection. The vehicle is at 161,000 miles and is starting to have the same hesitation issues. The vehicle will also die at times when the auto stop engine activates. The new issues have not been addressed by a dealer yet. Safety is at risk when accelerating because it cuts out and you could be hit by an oncoming vehicle or fail to maneuver appropriately without acceleration power. The recall for hesitation was completed on this vehicle by the Ford dealership and the issue resurfaced after this was done.

The 10 Speed Transmission, also known as 10R80, is absolutely horrible and should be banned. I have the 2019 ford expedition manufacturered in January of 2019 there is constant jerking, poor shifting, delayed gear recognition, slipping gears while going highway speeds and side streets are the worst, this is a great concern of mine. My dealership will not fix the issue due to manufacturer warranty is out. However this is a known issue after this model was built. Ford is no help they said there is no warranty on it to fix it amd no customer satisfaction program available. I do not have $10,000 or more to replace this issue. CDF drum of this model was also found to be defective.

NHTSA #11743347

Torch Converter was changed 1 1/2 years ago and now the CDF drum is going out, causing hard shifting and skipping shifts. This dangerous as the primary family driver to transport our children and the pause in shifting attempting to merge on the interstate is very dangerous and could ultimately lead to death if there is oncoming and if shifts hard or pauses with shifting when merging.

NHTSA #11724920

My transmission feels as if it is skipping. It feels as if the truck is going to stop while driving. Making it very dangerous and unsafe for my children and myself. The two codes that a scanner gave were P0732:00-6D and P07F7:00-6D. Please help with this. My truck is not even that old nor is high on mileage. Thank you.

NHTSA #11722138

10R80 Transmission issues. Hard shifting, lunging forward, irradic shifting on highway, hard shifting between 3rd and 4th gear which causes the vehicle to lunge forward. Near full transmission failure on highway. Excessive loss of power and erratic shifting. Had to pull over in the highway. Mechanic states a new transmission is needed.

NHTSA #11712075

While driving, the vehicle experiences a sudden loss of power, after which the transmission goes into what feels like a false neutral. It then violently re-engages and accelerates uncontrollably without driver input. This is an extremely dangerous situation and presents a major safety risk to us and to others on the road. Fortunately, we were able to avoid a crash, but this could have easily resulted in a serious accident. The vehicle was initially brought to the dealership for an A/C issue, and at that time we asked that this transmission concern also be inspected. We were informed that the dealership could not replicate the problem. Since then, the issue has become more frequent and more severe. We have now been told that we can drop the vehicle off, but that it may take 3–4 weeks or longer before diagnostics even begin, and that we would be responsible for out-of-pocket rental car costs during this time. We were also told that because the issue could not previously be replicated, this would now be considered customer pay, despite the fact that this is a serious powertrain and safety-related issue. We find this unacceptable. This is not a convenience issue—it is a known concern with Ford’s 10-speed transmissions, and it places our safety at risk every time the vehicle is driven. We have opened a case with Ford in hopes that assistance will be provided, including: Proper diagnosis and repair of the transmission issue Coverage of related repair costs Assistance with a rental vehicle while the SUV is being evaluated, as it is currently unsafe to drive We trust Ford to stand behind its product and take this issue seriously before someone is injured.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from the transmission. The transmission was slipping, and the RPM was abnormally elevated. There were several unknown warning lights illuminated, and the engine overheated. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred. While driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine overheated again. The coolant reservoir was refilled with five gallons of coolant. The engine continued to overheat, and the coolant reservoir was continuously refilled. The contact stated that on one occasion, the contact and her husband were stranded at the side of the road in the freezing cold for two hours. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with the driver's front wheel bearings and sensors failures. The contact was informed that the wheel bearings failure was the cause of the failure because the transmission was unable to perform as designed. The contact was informed that the driver's side front-wheel bearing, and all the sensors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.

NHTSA #11716688

After Ford Recall 24E13 (Powertrain Control Module reprogramming) was completed on my 2019 Ford Expedition Max, the vehicle immediately developed transmission problems. It began hesitating to go into reverse and then produced DTC P0736 (reverse gear ratio incorrect). Within days, it failed to shift properly and was returned by the dealership. The issue occurred only after the recall repair, indicating a possible calibration or programming fault that affected the powertrain. Ford dealership staff acknowledged metal in the fluid but gave inconsistent explanations and then claimed the transmission had to be replaced. The vehicle also displayed a “Powertrain System Fault” warning. No such problems existed before the recall. This raises a safety concern because transmission malfunction after a recall could cause loss of control or failure to move the vehicle. The vehicle was returned to us on October 7, 2025; it remains unsafe to drive. Ford Corporate has been notified (Case CXH-05773791-T4G0R8), but no resolution has been provided. I am requesting NHTSA review this as a potential post-recall powertrain safety failure related to Recall 24E13.

NHTSA #11691900

Ford 10 speed automatic transmission. Driving at highway speeds the vehicle suddenly went into limp mode. This dropped the vehicle speed from 70 mph to 20 mph without warning. A flashing wrench indicator light on the dash illuminated. A grinding noise coming from underneath the vehicle occurred. Our vehicle has an extended warranty. The vehicle was dropped off at the dealership it was purchased from. Dealership stated the separator plate inside the transmission was defective and needed replaced. The work was completed and the vehicle has been returned to us. This could have caused a significant accident on the freeway. Luckily with experienced drivers this was avoided.

NHTSA #11690516

2019 Ford Expedition Max with the 10R80 transmission experienced severe shifting issues shortly after PCM recall 24E13 was performed. The recall involves PCM/TCM updates and adaptive shift strategy reset. After the recall, the vehicle developed shuddering, harsh shifting, flaring between gears, and delayed engagement. Dealer diagnosis found internal transmission damage including CDF hub sleeve axial movement and No. 3 sun gear shell seal failure, along with diagnostic code P07E6. These failures are known on the 10R80, but the issue escalated immediately after the recall update. Transmission required a full overhaul. Concern that the recall calibration and adaptive strategy reset may accelerate internal wear or exacerbate pre-existing vulnerabilities in the 10R80 transmission.

NHTSA #11703768

Continued transmission issues, losing power, hard shifts, down shifts at random times. Been to the dealership several times about this. Safety issues due to being on busy highways at 65+ mph and loss of power or down shifts puts myself and others at risk of a wreck. No warning signs. Started reporting issues in September of 2025. Dealership has made 3 attempts to fix and the issue hasn’t been resolved.

NHTSA #11740298

The 10 Speed Transmission, also known as 10R80, is absolutely horrible and should be banned. I have had Ford rebuild the transmission more than once and also fully replaced with multiple shop visit with other trans issues. Constant jerking, poor shifting, delayed gear recognition, slipping gears while going highway speeds, are all causes for great concern. I am worried all the time that I may get in an accident with one of the skipping that occurs several times monthly. This Trans must be fully recalled due to its safety! This is a major safety issue. Who wants to pay $90,000.00 on a car to have constant transmission issues and jerky driving? This jerking has been worsening again lately and worried I need another trans repair. This happened again today which brings me to this complaint as Ford wont fiix the issue, needing a new style trans altogether!

NHTSA #11679716

The transmission is clunking and hard shifting causing the car to not just go when you accelerate. The car stutters and takes a minute to actually go when you press the accelerator. This has caused multiple times where pulling out of a parking lot has been dangerous since I can’t properly get up and go when need be. I had a mechanic look at my car and he confirmed my transmission needs to be replaced. There was no warning signs or messages about the failure.

NHTSA #11682197

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle briefly hesitated and failed to properly shift into gear. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 99,500.

NHTSA #11670625

I noticed that the car would make a clunking noise changing Drive to Reverse (vice versa) and had informed the dealership upon getting car checked up for cold start rattle issues that sounded like stemming from cam phaser. Dealer didn't comment on it. Over time, I felt it getting worse. Now at about 51,400 on my drive home on the freeway close to my exit, luckily, I felt the car vibrantly shaking (during drive and slow down). After exiting the freeway, I noticed car (and steering wheel) shaking vibrantly when going 25 mph and over. After taking it to a local mechanic, they found that the driveshaft was about to come off missing a part.

NHTSA #11670207

Transmission 10R80 2017-2023 is prone to jerking, sudden power loss, complete failure, hard shifts and random downshifts. Ford knows that this issue exists but fails to issue a recall. The main issue is with the CDF drum. Ford came out with a new CDF Drum in 2023 to remedy the issue. But fails to cover any costs to fix it. To get to the CDF drum a complete transmission tear down is required. Ford is involved in multiple class action lawsuits and has even issued a TSB (22-2428) but again, fails to cover any costs.

NHTSA #11667239

Expedition with 60k miles needing timing chain, cam phasers, 4 camshafts, valves and rockers. This has been a on going issue with 3.5 ecoboost engines. Ford needs a recall and reimbursement to owners for these costly repairs.

NHTSA #11669805

We purchased the 2019 Ford Expedition Limited from Interstate Ford in Miamisburg, OH, for $49,500 in 2023. The vehicle had roughly 47k miles on it at the time; it now has 69k. I started noticing that it was downshifting when I pulled out of my driveway and got about a block away from home shortly after our purchase. I reported this to the dealership several times, and they said they could not get it to replicate the problem. I explained that it was only happening when the engine was cold. Fast forward to June 2025, I was at the intersection one morning, and the vehicle would not move forward. Then it lurched forward suddenly, from that point, I started having more issues with 1st & 2nd gears. I took it to Germain Ford in Beavercreek, and they evaluated the issue and determined that I need a new transmission. This was submitted to Ford, and the replacement was approved, but it appears my extended warranty will have to cover the charges. I have noticed that several other people have reported the same issues with their 2019 models. Ford should cover this repair at no cost to us; that's just my opinion.

NHTSA #11669048

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as indented and started to decelerate unintendedly. The contact became aware of a rattling sound coming from underneath the vehicle. Several warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair under a recall; however, the contact was provided the cost for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified on the failure, and informed the contact that the vehicle was included in Technical Service Bulletin: 22-2428 (Automatic Transmission - Harsh-Delayed Engagement). The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

NHTSA #11672080

The transmission has completely failed. My wife pulled out into traffic and it failed to engage.

NHTSA #11666619

While attempting to accelerate and change lanes on the freeway, the vehicle unexpectedly slipped out of gear and appeared to shift into neutral. During this time, the gas pedal became completely unresponsive, leaving me unable to control the vehicle’s speed. Multiple warning lights and audible alerts activated briefly before disappearing. I released the gas pedal and attempted to accelerate again, at which point the vehicle re-engaged and resumed normal function. This issue first occurred approximately one month ago and has now happened two additional times. Each incident lasted several seconds during active freeway driving, creating a highly dangerous situation where I had no control over acceleration. This poses a serious safety risk, especially when merging or maneuvering in high-speed traffic. Although no accident has occurred yet, the potential for one is significant and deeply concerning.

NHTSA #11674143

Traveling at approximately 65 MPH and the transmission slipped into neutral and we began to lose speed while the engine freely revved, then it slammed back into gear violently. Then about an hour later on the same trip it did it again, except this time when it slammed into gear the rear tires lock up and we were nearly rear ended, luckily they swerved over in time. The wheels then unlocked and the vehicle drove mostly normal after that. The shifts were of poor quality from time to time, and we are out of state with no choice but to continue for the week. It seemed to happen when trying to increase speed, so now I am very gingerly speeding up when needed. We will get it in for service as soon as we get home next week.

NHTSA #11664000

Issues with the transmission (10R80) started in May 2025 around 79,000 miles, and lasted a few weeks before we could get to the Ford dealer. We have not towed anything or taken the vehicle off roading. We experienced very hard shifting, delayed acceleration, lurching, and loss of power. We were unable to drive the vehicle without one or more of these things consistently happening. One lurch was particularly violent where our momentum carried us forward while the vehicle slowed dramatically. The loss of power was particularly dangerous because I pulled into traffic and then shifting failed and I couldn’t move. I was stuck in the middle of the road until the gears cycled and eventually started working again. The loss of power also happened to my wife. The transmission issues appeared quickly and then rapidly became worse. We took it to Ford and they said the transmission needed replaced. This would allegedly be better than trying to fix it piece by piece. Apparently Ford could potentially help with costs if I submitted a case, but they would want to try to diagnose and fix it first. This meant being without the vehicle for an extended period and then having to return it to the shop if the part fixed didn’t solve the issue. This is unreasonable given that others online reported similar issues and the “fixes” often did not work. We did not have any dashboard lights illuminate as part of our issues. We had the transmission replaced.

While driving the vehicle will all of a sudden will come out of gear, he can hear grinding, when the rpms eventually slow down will go into neutral and can then be put back into gear. This happens in normal driving conditions, it happens while at cruising highway speeds bit more often happens while stepping into the gas to pass someone. You lose all power and is extremely dangerous! This has been happening since at least 2022 with vehicle since around 55k miles and continues now at 105k. During city driving it usually is just a harder shift which always seems to be around 4th,5th 6th gear which is same on hwy when it downshifts to around the same to pass someone. For ford to issue a tsb and not be recalled yet is unfathomable with how dangerous this can potentially be! Pictures attached is from around time we first started to experience the issue with 56k 04/10/2022 and 59k 06/06/2022 on vehicle. Other two are from me having them look at it for said issue with no resolution! Last is most recent with them recommending me to get transmission flushed.will be returning to shop on 5/23/2025 for same issue. There are numerous times in between these that this issue has happened as well but with wife driving and this happing definitely angered me and scared her to not want to drive it anymore with most recent event on Friday 5/9/2025!

NHTSA #11660458

My 2019 Ford Expedition Max is experiencing shifting issues from first to second gear. After some extensive research i found that Ford is aware of this problem and issued a TSB for this back in 2023 TSB number 22-2428. I spoke to the dealership, and they stated they were aware of the ongoing issue and there is not a recall for it yet and most of the time unless its life threatening there will not be recall. I find that very disturbing, your vehicle not changing gears is life threatening. Not sure how we can get this investigated and made a recall.

NHTSA #11658135

Transmission failure, skipping, and stalling. It can be inspected. My family and Is safety was put at risk when the transmission started stalling out while leaving the exit ramp to turn onto a busy road with constant traffic. As soon as the acceleration pedal was pressed after leaving the stop sign stalling occurred and again at the following stop light upon acceleration. Yes the problem has been confirmed by a dealership. It has not been inspected by the police, insurance, or others. No warning before hand other than it would skip certain gears and jerk really hard.

NHTSA #11670655

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 35,155.

NHTSA #11656811

10 Speed transmission slipped out of gear twice while driving Vehicle has 39,000 miles but 5.5 years old. Dealership and Ford acknowledge the transmission is a problem but is out of warranty and I need to spend $10,000 for repair. I believe they are selling defective cars to consumers and will not help to resolve the issue especially with such low mileage. They should be placed on recall. An independent transmission repair company tells me these 10 speed cars are commonly seen and cannot be repaired. The internet is full of owners with similar problem

NHTSA #11656582

While driving the 2019 Ford Expedition the transmission intermittently has an issue where there is harsh or extreme delayed engagement and loss of power. This has occurred while attempting to merge on the highway in traffic and put myself and highway drivers at risk when it suddenly was not possible to accelerate to merge safely. The component was inspected by the Ford dealer and their response was to re-program the transmission software, however this has not resolved the issue and it still occurs. There were no warning lamps or indicator to show that the vehicle has a problem.

NHTSA #11665886

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced an unintended transmission downshift and the vehicle stalled. The transmission warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not included in a related recall. A case was opened and the contact was referred to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

NHTSA #11652539

2019 FORD EXPEDITION THAT HAS BEEN IN FOR PAST TRANSMISSION ISSUES WITH NO PROBLEMS FOUND. FORD IS NOW TELLING ME I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION AND OF COURSE ITS OUT OF WARRANTY. ISSUES ARE WHEN AT A STOP AND ACCELARATING THE VEHICLE SHAKES AS IF YOU ARE GOING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS. ALSO, AT HWY SPEEDS WHEN ACCELERATING TO CHANGE LANES THE TRANSMISSION WILL COMPLETELY LOSS POWER AND ENGINE WILL REV THEN IT WILL JUMP BACK IN GEAR. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES AND I AM LUCKY THIS HASNT ENDED IN AN ACCIDENT. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS WARNING OF THE PROBLEM. I SEE SEVERAL TSB'S THAT FORD HAS PUT OUT BUT NO RECALL. THIS IS A SAFTEY ISSUE THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD JUMP INTO NEUTRAL WHILE DOING 50MPH. FORD KNOWS THIS AND THEY ARE NOT ISSUING A RECALL. THIS WILL BE THE LAST FORD I EVER OWN.

NHTSA #11652416

Very delayed shift from 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th gear. Sometimes jumping out of gear when attempting to pass or using the interstate on ramp.

NHTSA #11655360

As I was driving the transmission started to jerk. As I pressed the gas pedal the car began to downshift and made a huge bang noise and wasn’t going anywhere, as cars are passing me .I was on the freeway I was scared for my life and my family’s life that someone was going to rear end me.

NHTSA #11653296

Vehicle has a rattle upon starting. Also the vehicle is shifting harshly and slipping. Sometimes the vehicle will stop accelerating in the middle of the road, or when accelerating from a stopped position. The RPMs will rise but the vehicle stops having power and the gear indicator moves up and down until it clicks back into a gear and the vehicle will go again. I have had the vehicle examined by a technician and have been told that it is the cam phasers, CDF drum/transmission, and torque converter. Ford will not honor any warranty or cover the cost of these repairs.

NHTSA #11650538

ford knowingly put in a faulty CDF drum to cut corners and make more profit (hence the class action lawsuit) and transmission shifts erratically (1-3-5-10-1-6) safety concern. loss of power while driving

NHTSA #11697461

10R80 Transmission Failure; transmission bound up in traffic, while under power causing the steering to bind. Dealer diagnosed failure of clutch due to CDF Drum Bushing failure.

NHTSA #11647135

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission unexpectedly downshifted with several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was able to be restarted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the transmission had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

NHTSA #11645430

The vehicle electronically put itself in to park at 75 MPH

NHTSA #11637843

When driving down the interstate or crossing traffic the transmissions in these vehicles will slip causing you to be immobile. Possibly causing death

NHTSA #11637086

My 2019 Ford expedition started making a rattling noise when starting the engine, the noise continued to get louder and the engine beagn to make a knocking noise when idling, and trouble starting when cold. I was ouyt of warrenty by a few thousand miles when I had to bring it to be repaired and I was told the cam phasers were faulty and it was a known issue even though Ford not issuing a recall. In my vehicle there was a spring missing and parts loose that dislodged into the engine that could cause it to get caught distroying the entire motor while driving which could seriously injure not just the driver but loose control of car and cause major accident. Doing research this seems to been a common issue in the Ford expedition 2018-2020. There should be a recall for faulty part not just if your still covered under warrenty, it is a serious malfuntion that can really cause bad accident that is not a service or operator error that causes a malfunctioning/breaking of cam phasers.

NHTSA #11643174

When driving on a highway we went to pass a slower moving vehicle. When pulling out into the oncoming lane to accelerate the automatic transmission slipped into neutral. This situation became dangerous because there was a vehicle coming at us and we had to break to get back behind the slower vehicle. However the transmission did go back into gear causing us to become a hazard to the vehicles behind us. Again this happened on the interstate when accelerating to get on the interstate. This is a known problem by Ford and has been documented many times. Ford claims that since the vehicle is past the warranty period they aren't responsible to repair.

NHTSA #11636270

I have started noticing rough shifting, delayed engagement, harsh shifts, and sometimes even slipping between gears. Have taken to the dealership and it is needing a whole new transmission

NHTSA #11638555

SIX WEEKS AGO MY TRANSMITION START JUMPING WHEN IT SHIFTED GEARS. THE EXPEDITION ONLY HAS 82, 212 MILES ON IT. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC AND HE RAN A DIAGNOSTICS TEST AND GOT A CODE P2701, WHICH IS A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. HE SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS BAD AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED OR REBUILT. I TOOK IT TO A SECOND MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING. HE SUGGESTED REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER FIRST TO SEE IF THAT FIXED THE PROBLEM. HAD HIM DO A FULL TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER REPLACEMENT. THAT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. IT HAS GOTTEN WORST AND NOW JUMPS AND HESITATES WHEN SHIFTING GEARS ALL THE TIME, WHICH IS DANGEROUS. CALLED THE LOCAL FORD DELIVER AND THEY SAID THERE WERE NOT ANY RECALLS AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO UNDER ANY WARRENTIES. THEY ALSO STATED THEY WERE AWARE THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THIS TRANSMISSION BUT THERE WAS NOTHING COULD DO WITHOUT A RECALL FROM FORD. THEY SAID THEY COULD REPLACE THE TRANSMISSIN FOR AROUND $8000-$9000 DOLLARS. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND A NUMBER OF VECHICLES WITH THIS TRANSMSSION HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION JUMPING AND HESITATING. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND COULD CAUSE A DIFFINITE SAFETY PROBLEM AND EVEN CAUSE A WRECK AND POTENTIALLY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURIES OR EVEN DEATH WITH THIS PROBLEM. FORD NEEDS TO ISSUE AN IMMEDIATE RECALL FOR ALL THESE TRANSMITIONS.

NHTSA #11638974

Rattles on every cold start related to cam phasers going bad

NHTSA #11629490

Ongoing transmission issue that ford has not recalled from the release of the 10 speed transmission until 2022 when they replaced the CSF drum

NHTSA #11632332

The contact owns 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while accelerating between first and second gear, the vehicle jerked abnormally, and the RPM decreased almost causing the vehicle to stall. The contact stated that after the hesitation, the vehicle returned to normal operation. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the transmission and clutch were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 101,671.

NHTSA #11636583

This appears to be a common problem when I researched it online. When trying to accelerate hard, the transmission will suddenly go to neutral instead of shifting. This causes a pause in accelerating when you need. It will then slam in to gear a few seconds later with various warnings about the transmission showing on the dash. I have had the vehicle inspected right after an incident that happened and there are no codes though you have warnings that temporarily show on the dash when it happens. The most recent incident was on the freeway while changing lanes to go around slower traffic and caused the person behind us to have to hit their brakes since the vehicles was unable to accelerate and even slowed instead for several seconds.

NHTSA #11625758

With our expedition on numerous occasions the transmission will be acting as normal and then go into a false neutral which will leave the vehicle unable to accelerate or be moved over to safety, it has happened while trying to merge and nearly causing a accident and then on another occasion crossing a non divided highway only to leave me stranded unable to make it move with oncoming traffic, very dangerous situation .. the problem is very hard to replicate for dealers to diagnose

NHTSA #11621384

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while the vehicle was cold and driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle started shuddering abnormally between gears, and the RPM increased, causing the vehicle to lose power. The contact stated that after the hesitation, the vehicle returned to normal operation. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. However, an unknown module was reprogrammed, and the main control body valve was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and contact was provided TSB: 24-2101. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

Seat Belts23 complaints

As I was driving down the road, my passenger seatbelt popped and exploded, filling my car with smoke. My son yelled fire although I didn’t see a flame. My passenger seatbelt is no longer functioning. Leaving me with one less seat in my car. Ford refuses to fix or give a loaner

NHTSA #11745324

Complaint: While driving at normal road speed with no collision or impact, I experienced a sudden loud “pop” from the driver-side seatbelt area. Immediately after, I noticed a burning smell coming from the same location. I initially believed I had a tire blowout and pulled over to inspect the vehicle. When I attempted to unbuckle and then re-extend the seatbelt, I found that the seatbelt was locked and would not retract or extend normally. The restraint system is now inoperable. This incident appears to be an inadvertent deployment of the seatbelt pretensioner without a crash event, resulting in a restraint system malfunction. The failure occurred during normal driving conditions and without any external trigger. This creates a serious safety risk because: * The seatbelt is no longer functional and cannot properly restrain the occupant * The unintended deployment could startle the driver and lead to loss of vehicle control * The presence of a burning smell raises concern for thermal or electrical hazard within the restraint system I am aware of similar complaints involving unintended seatbelt pretensioner deployment in Ford Expedition vehicles of similar model years. This incident should be investigated as a potential defect affecting occupant restraint systems. I’ve contacted ford with no help to resolve the issue Injury: No Crash: No Fire: No (burning odor present, no visible flames) Speed at time of incident: 35 Mileage at time of incident: 170xxx The vehicle’s seatbelt system remains in a failed/locked condition and requires repair.

While driving down the highway I suddenly heard a loud bang and what looked like smoke came out from the area by the front passenger seatbelt. The seatbelt had suddenly retracted fully and locked. Thankfully the seat was unoccupied at the time, so nobody was injured by this. When calling the local Ford dealership we were told we needed to bring vehicle in for inspection before parts could be ordered. When we called back to schedule the inspection we were told the recall was paused so we needed to wait to even have the inspection. After contacting Ford corporate we were finally able to bring in for inspection 06/01/2026 to confirm what we already knew about the broken seatbelt retractor. The dealership relayed this info to Ford, and Ford told them not to fix it at this time. When we called the dealership 06/08 they relayed that info to us. We then requested that Ford provide us a loaner vehicle. The dealership called us back 06/09 to let us know that Ford would not be providing a loaner vehicle. Our front passenger seat is occupied about 95% of the time, and that seatbelt is completely unusable. We have not been given any kind of timeline for when it can be repaired, and have no other option but to drive it the way it is. It is illegal and we are forced to put the life of one of our family members at risk because we do not have any extra seats or the money to buy yet another vehicle or pay for a rental as we are still paying for this vehicle that we bought less than a year ago.

On [XXX], the seatbelt pretensioner on my 2019 Ford Expedition MAX Platinum suddenly discharged without warning while the vehicle was stationary. It emitted a loud noise, caused the seatbelt to lock, and released a strong burning smell, consistent with prior reports linked to recall 24V099 / 25V197000. I purchased this vehicle used on [XXX] from Taverna Infiniti of North Miami (FL). At the time of sale, the dealership: •Did not disclose any active recalls •Provided an inspection form stating the seatbelt and warning systems were “OK” •Sold the vehicle with an illuminated airbag (SRS) warning light •Delivered the vehicle with a non-functional driver-side tail light Four days later ([XXX]), the dealer sent me a Carfax report showing the vehicle had an active NHTSA safety recall (24V099), issued in February 2024, with a known remedy available. The dealership knowingly sold a vehicle with an unrepaired safety defect, and the defect has now resulted in an actual pretensioner discharge — which could pose a fire risk and compromised occupant protection. I am currently working to have the vehicle serviced at a Ford-authorized dealer. I am reporting this event to document: •The failure of the seatbelt pretensioner •The dealer’s noncompliance with safety disclosure obligations •The risk posed to other consumers INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My husband was driving and I was in the passenger seat we were driving slow because we were coming to a stop at a red light. All of a sudden we hear a loud sound like a shotgun went off in the car. It felt like something hit my chest hard and like a puff of air. My seat belt all of a sudden was squeezing me. Then it smelled like gun powder. My husband and I were stunned and couldn't understand what had just happened. He thought someone shot at us or something exploded under the car. I was in so much pain I unlocked the seatbelt and I opened my door in the middle of all the traffic stopped and I got out. I felt like I was going to faint. My husband was asking if I was bleeding anywhere. I was looking and saying no but I couldn't understand what just happened. I starting crying and got in the back seat. My husband asked if I wanted to go to the hospital and I said and tell them what! They will think I am crazy. Went to my daughters crying the whole way. She googled and ended up finding a problem with the seat belts. I then started looking as well and came across this man that was on a Ford forum and explained the exact same thing happened to him and his wife. I am so glad we were not going any faster because I don't know how we would have not had an accident. I am now scared of my car and using seatbelts. I called the dealer today and I have an appointment for Monday to get it all looked at. Very disturbing on so many levels.

I own a 2019 Ford Expedition with fewer than 100,000 miles equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. The vehicle began experiencing a loud cold-start rattle, engine timing issues, and check engine light illumination. The vehicle was diagnosed by a Ford dealership with internal VCT/cam phaser mechanical failure affecting engine timing and performance. The dealership diagnostic identified trouble codes P0016, P0365, and P0369. The dealership also documented that the engine oil level and condition were within specification, indicating the failure was not caused by lack of maintenance or neglect. The dealership recommended replacement of all four VCT units and four VCT solenoids due to internal mechanical failure. This issue creates a serious safety concern because improper engine timing can cause loss of power, rough operation, stalling, or sudden engine performance issues while driving. This appears to be a widespread issue affecting Ford vehicles equipped with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine, particularly involving cam phasers, timing components, and VCT systems. A major internal timing-related failure on a vehicle with under 100,000 miles should not occur under normal operating conditions. I am submitting this complaint because this defect may affect the safe operation and reliability of the vehicle.

Transmissions CDF Drum is failing annd causing my transmission to go out of gear and slam into first and I just preformed “cam phaser” repairs exceeding $3400. A vehicle this new should not need these repairs. There’s 1000s of complaints online and it’s sick and twisted that Ford is not forced to recall these issues.

Vehicle has a rattle upon starting. Also the vehicle is shifting harshly and slipping. Sometimes the vehicle will occasionally stop accelerating in the middle of the road. The RPMs will rise but the vehicle stops having power. After a minute it finally jerks and the vehicle will go again. I have had the vehicle examined by a technician and have been told that it is the cam phasers, CDF drum/transmission, and torque converter.

NHTSA #11632184

I am being told that the Cam Phasers need to be replaced. This is a well known issue to Ford. They did a programming adjustment in 2021, and then did replacements only if you had continued issues up until Jan 2023. I have issues now, and they are telling me I am not covered. The cam phasers have been redesigned so they know they installed poorly designed parts originally. This is an almost $4,000 repair.

The passenger side headlight DRL is fading and does not appear to be as bright and pronounced as the driver side DRL. This vehicle has the LED headlights and fog lights.

NHTSA #11707752

LED daytime running lights have failed and turned blue on one side. This issue appears to affect many vehicles of the same make and model. DRLs are a piece of safety equipment that makes the vehicle more visible to others, and as such, should be in proper working order.

Allegedly reported: 1 injury (as reported to NHTSA). NHTSA #11729065

Yesterday, while I was driving to pick up my kids from school, my 2019 Ford Expedition, the driver’s side seatbelt literally exploded — it went off like it would in a crash (but there was no crash). I was driving when it exploded and tightened so tight on me. Now the seatbelt doesn’t work at all. It was terrifying, so loud and painful. This is part of a known recall issue. When the dealership had my car back in May to replace my cam phasers, they told me the seatbelt recall parts weren’t available yet. Fast forward to now — the seatbelt has gone off, the vehicle can’t be driven safely, and Ford (both the local dealership and customer service) is saying there’s nothing they can do for me right now. The dealership told me I would have to pay to have it towed and pay for a rental. Also, they aren’t sure how fast they can get parts or diagnose it. I’m honestly at a loss. This is a safety recall, and I can’t use my car because of it. I literally just paid $2400 in may for my cam phasers and now this.

Steering2 complaints

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while his wife was driving on a neighborhood road at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel seized. There were no warning lights illuminated. The driver proceeded to pull over, and the vehicle was towed to a local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the electronic steering control module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

NHTSA #11680426

The vehicle's steering wheel became very loose at ~50k miles making it wobbly and potential to fall off which could cause danger while driving and possibility of airbag deployment. As seen in the attached pictures, there was no thread locker on the bolt that tightens the steering wheel down. I was able to remove it simply with my hands upon a few twist.

I was driving and felt a clunk in transmission and lost power and almost got rear ended. The wrench light came on so I pulled over and turned off the vehicle. I restarted and it ran fine but the transmission is dangerous, I don't want that to happen again. The transmission constantly hard shifts. This was at 2am in the morning when I was driving from FL to MD.

NHTSA #11694925

The transmission has delays in shifting up and down causing unpredictable ability to accelerate when entering highways in front of speeding vehicles. The Ford technician confirmed the issue and stated that ultimately, the transmission could fail at anytime. The Ford technician strongly encouraged me to replace the transmission after his the dealership inspected the vehicle and were able to replicate the problem. This was an out of pocket expense. Power Train,Unknown Or Other2 complaints

I purchased my 2019 Ford Expedition Max Limited on [XXX]. When we purchase the vehicle we signed a notice that we would have the recalls completed within a reasonable time. I took my vehicle for the recall to Feyer Ford in Edenton, North Carolina on May 30th. Prior to the recall I was having no issues at all with the vehicle. Once I pick the vehicle up on [XXX] and started my traveling home. Within 10 minutes of leaving, the vehicle made a loud screeching noise. The wrench light came on, and the vehicle seemed to not accelerate forward. I was able to pull off the road and turn the vehicle off. I called Feyer Ford to make them aware of the problem and they told me that it was because the PCM had been reprogrammed and would need to relearn how I drive. I had the same issue happen again further down the road, this is a very serious safety hazard that my vehicle suddenly stopped moving forward in traffic. I called Feyer Ford once again and was told that I had to drive the vehicle 1,000 miles before the PCM would relearn my driving patterns. I took the vehicle in on June 4th to have it checked out and was told that I would need a valve body replacement and torque converter replacement. That essentially my transmission was bad. Since that date the vehicle has gone into reverse numerous times when I put it in Drive, it will also get stuck in 4th 7th or 10th gear when you are trying to drive it in a parking lot or going slow on the road. When it gets stuck in those gears the vehicle will not go forward it will only allow you to go backwards. My car has been at Feyer Ford since July 29 trying to have the warranty cover the fix, but it was denied for warranty coverage because they stated the vehicle was broken by the recall. We were told we could pick up our un-fixed vehicle on Aug 27. We got the key and proceeded to leave only to find the car not put back together from a different seat belt recall. It is still at Feyer Ford today, September 6th 2025. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

We had been driving for 3 hours and was in an extremely busy area in Houston, Tx. While entering another highway in extremely congested area the transmission shifted out of gear into Neutral engine revved and shut down. After about 3 -5 seconds it kicked hard into gear and continues on our way. This has happened several times in the past and was taken in previously for same problem. By being in congested traffic and with cars speeding around and honking horns it was a tense moment. Reported to dealer and transmission was dismantled and a part replaced in the transmission. Still don't feel comfortable with the transmission. Prior to this incident there were no immediate warning signs.

The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that when the vehicle was started in the morning, the engine was idling roughly while making an abnormal rattling sound. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent, but the rattling sound became worse and more frequent. The contact stated that there were no warning lights illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the cam phasers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N03 (Engine and Engine Cooling) for cam phaser replacement. The contact questioned the dealer and was informed that the vehicle was not covered under the program. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was recently repaired under Customer Satisfaction Program: 24E13 for an ignition and TCM (Power Train) software update. The contact stated that following the software update, the transmission was slipping out of gear and was hesitating while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was returned to the same dealer to be diagnosed, and it was determined that the transmission shift cable bushing had failed, and the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was 69,401.

The contact stated that the failure progressively worsened. The contact stated while driving at various speeds and depressing the accelerator pedal, the engine misfired. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was no longer covered under warranty. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

Power Train,Electrical System,Engine2 complaints

While driving at approximately 70 mph on an interstate highway, the vehicle intermittently loses propulsion during acceleration. Engine power drops suddenly and the vehicle coasts for several seconds before power returns. This has occurred multiple times and creates an immediate safety hazard due to sudden loss of speed in active traffic lanes. The engine also produces a loud rattle at cold start. These symptoms began at approximately 70,000 miles and progressively worsened. A Ford dealership later diagnosed cam phaser failure at 88,938 miles. The loss of propulsion occurs without warning lights or driver alerts. Sudden reduction in engine power at highway speeds increases the risk of rear-end collision or loss of vehicle control. This condition presents a significant safety concern.

NHTSA #11720851

I was on the freeway going between 65-70mph when I felt a hard shift and lost all acceleration. The truck started to slow down and the wrench light came on. I was able to coast to the shoulder and turn my hazards on while the wrench light and warnings were going. I parked the truck and waited for my husband to help. The truck sat for approximately 20 minutes when it was turned back on. There were no lights on the dash and the wrench warning went away [XXX] husband was able to drive it home. I had my three kids in the truck and it was a terrifying experience. I took it to get scanned and it gave us a throttle body code. My vehicle supposedly isn't affected but this experience tells me that myself and my kids are in more danger than what is being claimed. Power Train,Vehicle Speed Control,Engine1 complaint

Multiple times we have received Powertrain Failure warnings. These warnings typically happen when driving in cruise control but also happens in normal driving. The car has trouble shifting gears, gets stuck in gears, and has trouble downshifting. This creates unsafe and unstable driving especially at high speeds. Repeated visits to the dealer have yielded no results and the dealer has not mentioned transmission work one time despite a clear issue and widespread issues with this transmission model. This issue has been persistent since the car was bought.

Electrical System,Structure1 complaint

On May 26, 2026, my 2019 Ford Expedition suffered a total systemic safety failure that resulted in my toddler being locked inside the vehicle in direct sunlight, requiring an emergency extraction. I used the FordPass app to unlock the vehicle and opened the driver’s door and passenger door on the diver's side. I placed my bag containing the proximity key fob onto the driver’s seat floorboard while the vehicle was completely off. I closed the driver's door and walked to the rear door behind the driver's seat, which was still open, to buckle my child into his car seat. Upon closing his door, the vehicle immediately initialized a "ghost lock" command, sealing all doors with the key fob inside, directly violating the vehicle's "Smart Unlock" and Passive Entry Passive Start (PEPS) safety protocols. The FordPass remote application then completely failed, refusing to process any commands to unlock the vehicle or remote-start the engine to turn on the air conditioning for the child. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling the application via a good samaritan’s cellular hotspot, the app remained completely unresponsive due to a total communication crash with the vehicle. I called 911. Local police arrived on-site first and attempted an emergency manual override using a mechanical lockout tool down the window frame, which failed. Due to the rapidly increasing interior heat in the direct Florida sun, arriving firefighters determined the child was in critical danger and shattered the rear passenger door main window to perform an immediate extraction. This failure represents an unmitigated malfunction of the door latch systems documented under Ford TSB 20-2421, which overrode all safety failsafes without warning. An upcoming diagnostic testing appointment is being scheduled at an authorized Ford dealer to pull the module codes and initiate a manufacturer safety review.

Electrical System,Seat Belts,Structure1 complaint

While backing up the vehicle, the front passenger seat belt retractor pretensioner suffered an inadvertent, spontaneous pyrotechnic deployment. There was a loud pop resembling a firecracker, immediately followed by smoke in the cabin and the odor of gunpowder. The force of the explosive deployment dislodged the interior B-pillar trim panels. The passenger front seatbelt has been locked into place. Following this, the dashboard displayed a Check Engine light and a Battery charging system warning light, indicating the electrical system was damaged. The vehicle is rendered undriveable due to the disabled charging system and the compromised passenger seat belt. There were absolutely know warning lamps, messages, or unusual symptoms prior to the failure. At this time, the incident has not yet been physically inspected, as corporate customer service lines indicated a remedy hold on the active safety recall (Recall 24S06).

Power Train,Vehicle Speed Control1 complaint

My 2019 Ford Expedition started making some loud noises while accelerating and wouldn’t accelerate as usual when I pressed the gas pedal — there was a noticeable delay in gear shifting and acceleration. Often when I did shift gears, there would be a very loud clunking sound. It got much worse over the course of several days. At one point, I was on the highway and needed to accelerate quickly to maneuver around other vehicles —I pressed the gas and there was no acceleration— the vehicle just stayed at the current speed and it was a couple beats before the vehicle responded to me pressing down hard in the gas pedal. It did finally accelerate, but it was very delayed. It was a very unsafe experience. I have since learned there is a known issue with the transmission on these vehicles that causes this issue.

I own 2019 Expedition had a powertrain malfunction happened to me around 48k miles a few years back on the I35 by Pauls Valley, OK and we all most got ran off the road. Scary. Was able to get home which was 30 minutes away on back road going about 35mph. Next morning no, light vehicle was fine. I did report this to my local Ford dealer, Charles Allen Ford in Chickasha, OK. Was advised it was most likely due to condensation within a sensor or weather change. I trusted them on their assessment since it hasn’t happened again. This past Monday coming from sons football game which is 26 miles away it happens again, vehicle stalling and we almost got hit by a Semi truck. I currently have 84k miles Next morning was fine. No codes showing and vehicle ran as usual. I told Jim Allen who owns the Charles Allen Ford about this when I seen Tuesday at the local YMCA. he advised probably weather change within a sensor. Told me to bring it for a check and they would take care of me. I didn’t as I don’t have the money to do that, especially after hearing other stories how the dealership kept the vehicle for weeks to months without finding an issue. So I took to my neighbor owns a diesel mechanic shop so we put on lift and check transmission fluid, clear and no flakes.
