Recalls Reported to NHTSA

The following recalls were reported to NHTSA. A recall does not by itself establish that any individual vehicle is defective.

EQUIPMENT:MECHANICAL:ACCESSORY SCISSOR/SCREW/BOTTLE JACK/LIFT:STAND

NHTSA #21V440000

General Motors, LLC. (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Buick Encore GX and 2021-2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicles. The emergency jack, if not positioned as directed in the vehicle owner's manual, can fracture while in use.

Reported consequence: A fractured jack can cause the vehicle to collapse, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the jack, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owner of the safety risk are expected to be mailed July 26, 2021. A second notice will be mailed once remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. GM's number for this recall is A212335470.

Complaints Filed with NHTSA

The following are consumer-reported complaints filed with NHTSA. These are unverified allegations and are not proof that any defect exists.

Power Train6 complaints

The contact owns a 2022 Buick Encore GX. The contact stated that while shifting to park, the message "Shift to Park" remained on the instrument panel. The door locks failed to unlock automatically causing the contact to have to unlock the door manually. The following day the vehicle failed to start immediately. The contact stated that several attempts were made to start the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the gear shifter was not responding as needed. Additionally, the vehicle was idling rough. The mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to Technical Service Bulletin: 23/NA/119 with NHTSA ID Number: 11009103 (Power Train) and referred the contact to the dealer. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the vehicle was not included in the TSB and that the gear shifter repair was not covered under the warranty. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and confirmed that the VIN was not covered under warranty, TSB, or recall. The failure mileage was 43,132.

Place car in park, turn off car. On your screen in front of you it shows “shift to park” and the radio does not shut off. It continues to chime and the radio and chime does not shut off. Dealership states it is the shifter and the connector that is a problem. Shifter is on backorder for undetermined time.

NHTSA #11618957

Get shift to park worning when in part. Lights stay on and worning signal sounds. Have to keep fooling with shifter to stop. GM seems not willing to do anything with this problem and parts to fix are on back order with no time for availability. Repair is around $560.00. From what I can find out , this has been an on going problem with GM autos. Please help

2022 Buick Encore GX - Reported this already via #11618957 or 9-13811484283 with Buick. Shifter and connector were stating "Place car in park" even when car was turned off. Radio would not shut off & would continue to beep. The part was on back order for over 1 month. Car could not be driven. Transmission light would be on display. Friday, Nov 29th received call part was finally in. Car has been fixed HOWEVER since this is not a recall the monies are coming out of my 87yr old fathers acct. This car only has 24,000 miles. I'm told by dealer unless a recall we have to pay. The dealer, Sid Dillon in Blair, NE had many cars with this same issue. The shifter & connector were bad. Is there a way a recall can be done on this issue? Trying to escalate this within GM as well. Thank you

NHTSA #11628403

The contact owns a 2022 Buick Encore GX. The contact stated that on several occasions when the vehicle was shifted into reverse, the vehicle failed to reverse as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle was shifted into neutral(N) and then shifted into drive (D). The vehicle was then parked at the residence. The vehicle was taken to a dealer however, the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 10,150.

NHTSA #11617820

The contact shifted the gear shifter back and forth between drive(D) and reverse (R) and then shifted into park(P) before the proper gear was recognized; however, on several occasions, the vehicle intermittently failed to turn off when the “Shift to Park” message was displayed, and the contact left the vehicle running until the vehicle shut off by itself. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the gearbox needed to be replaced; however, the part was on backorder. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 30.

Shift To Park appears on screen after vehicle is in park. Vehicle will continue running. By jiggling gear shift or putting car in another gear and then back in park the message disappears and car shuts off engine.

Shift To Park displays in instrument panel when car is in Park. From my research this has been happening on GM cars since 2018, why is there no recall on this issue? People pay to get this replaced and then it happens again because GM has a "potential" fix, they are not even sure which part is causing the issue. Please help, I cannot afford to get this fixed and of course this happened right after the bumper-to-bumper warranty expired. Tech not sure if it would be covered under the Power train warranty, but mostly likely not since GM really does not know what part is causing the issue, so I'm sure they will say its anything but the Powertrain! NHTSA should be protecting consumers, this is a very old issue, and GM is still selling vehicles with this issue! Force them to do a recall, it's only fair to the consumers.

When the car is parked, it will not shut off due to the “shift to park” warning.

Leased this car at the end of March. When I attempted to install the car seat for my grandson I could not find the LATCH anchors. My sales rep attempted to find them and could not. I finally was told to make a service appointment and the service manager could not find them. He contacted GM and after getting a response from them told me they are an "option" and I could have them order parts 20788228 and 20788229 and install them. I called GM customer service and after several calls from them they signed me up for GM Rewards and told me I could use my Reward points to pay for the parts and installation. The rep also told me that none of these cars have the anchors. This is a safety issue! And it's my understanding that these anchors are a requirement in new cars. My owners manual describes and pictures "lower anchors built into the vehicle," but they are definitely not there. I am now using a booster seat without any tethers which I feel is unsafe. I am complaining not because of the cost of adding the anchors, but because this is a safety issue that no one at GM seems to understand is a legal requirement. I don't blame my dealer - Cappellino Buick, Williamsville, NY but I am surprised at their service department's lack of knowledge in this area. GM told the service manager, Vincent Marino, "it looks like the child restraint plates are sold separately."

2022 Buick Encore GX its involvement in the following critical issues: 1)especial coverage N242484750 turbo replacement not cost. Recall A222379711 (ECM Oil Pressure Sensor software)Malfunction. – A known issue where the Engine Control Module (ECM) fails to properly clear the permanent status of DTC P0521 (Engine Oil Pressure Sensor Performance). Turbocharger Failure – A separate cause-efect related defect in which the turbocharger in my vehicle has failed, a Check Engine Light (MIL) activation/deactivation and a reduction in engine performance(*screen critical message.) resulting in a loss of power and critical malfunction that need replacement 3)Failure of GM and the Dealership to Provide Proper Documentation – Despite GM authorizing and the dealership supposedly completing only the recall software update. I have not received the necessary official documentation or compliance certification that the repair was performed, which is required by my state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for emissions and registration purposes.I was not noticed recall GM’s Improper Denial of Warranty Coverage for Turbocharger Failure – GM has refused to cover the turbocharger replacement under warranty, especial coverage N242484750 citing that my vehicle has a salvage title. However, my past accident only caused exterior damage and did not affect the engine, it passed DMV and all state verifications, accident has not relation or affectation with turbocharger, or any mechanical components related to this recall. If the turbo failure is a result of this recall and a factory defect, GM extended coverage at warranty and is still responsible, regardless of the title status. 2. The Relationship Between ECM Oil Pressure Sensor Issue & Turbocharger Failure exist cause sending incorrect amounts of oil to them While GM has treated these as separate issues, there is strong evidence to suggest that the ECM oil pressure issue directly contributed to the premature turbocharger failure.

Power Train,Electrical System3 complaints

For the last week or so, my car, a 2022 Buick Encore GX Sport, that I bought brand new and currently only has 30,000 miles, does not acknowledge being in Park when I park the vehicle and try to turn it off. This causes the car to remain on and radio playing and it beeping that it needs attention and to shift it to Park. if you try to close the door, it honks letting you know the car is still on, and pushing the shifter forward, trying to ensure it is all the way in Park does not resolve the issue. Restarting the car and trying to move it in a different gear either way (forward or reverse) and putting it back in park does not resolve the issues either. This is very frustrating and now I am worried about the car rolling or even having transmission issues since you have to restart and try to wiggle and finagle the shifter just so to finally get it to recognize it's really in Park. I did a recall search and have not found any recalls, I called the Dealer where I purchased it and they stated they have had to replace many shifters in this make and model and as a matter of fact where working on one at the time of my call and therefore did not currently have any parts available to correct this issue on my car. This is my only form of transportation and I cannot afford the estimated quote for this repair when parts do finally come in. What's the point in having a car that doesn't shut off?!?!?!

NHTSA #11680101

I get an error "shift to park" when I put my vehicle in "park" and shut it off. It goes into accessory mode and beeps. If I try to leave the vehicle, it will honk to alert me about the issue and I can't lock the vehicle and it stays in accessory mode. To alleviate this issue, I have to put the vehicle in reverse for a few feet and then drive forward and put it into park again, which can take many, many attempts to finally get the error to stop. This could be a safety issue if I have passengers trying to exit the vehicle while I'm attempting this maneuver. It is also a safety issue for those walking behind me in a parking lot because it takes so many attempts, it increases the chance is that I miss seeing someone walking behind me.

NHTSA #11678348

My SUV states shift to park, but I already have it in park and it will not shut off. I have to keep starting it up for it to shut-off. Also when I go to the gas station to fill my SUV up with gas and try to start it up it will not start. I keep trying to start it up and after about 10 to 15 minutes it finally starts.

Engine And Engine Cooling2 complaints

The contact owns a 2022 Buick Encore GX. The contact stated while driving approximately 20 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to exceed 35 MPH and made an abnormal loud sound that became louder as the contact continued driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was test-driven, and the contact was informed that there was an exhaust leak. The dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was drivable. The contact drove to the residence. The contact stated that upon parking the vehicle, the contact noticed that the exhaust pipe laying onto the ground. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the exhaust pipe had detached. The dealer determined that the exhaust muffler needed to be replaced, and the dealer ordered the parts. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to GM Campaign Number: N242445280 (Special Coverage Front Exhaust Pipe). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed, but the contact was informed that assistance would not be provided because the repair was not covered under warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.

NHTSA #11698247

The contact owns a 2022 Buick Encore GX. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the power steering and brakes were difficult to operate. The contact coasted to the side of the road and attempted to restart the vehicle. There were several unknown warning lights illuminated, and the message "Battery in Safe Mode" was displayed. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle, and the vehicle was towed to a local dealer. The dealer was able to restart the vehicle however, the dealer was unable to determine what caused the vehicle to stall. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred two more times. The contact had the vehicle towed to a different dealer, and it was diagnosed and determined that the alternator and the 12-Volt battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

Fuel/Propulsion System2 complaints

We where lucky compared to the other lady who wrote in this problem area. We where parked in a parking lot, ran in store to get item, left car running for wife to listen to radio and stay warm. As I got in, we spoke and was ready to pull out of the parking space and the car went weird. The car hesitated a little but was still running and then all the warning lights came on. It told us on the screen that steering might be effected and engine will not run to full capacity. The car ran like it was in "limp" mode(like the Kawasaki ATV when they have issue). We made it home carefully and slowly. We called and dealership had the car picked up. It's been there over a week now, their computer hook up said it was the fuel pump and also a fuel line was needed, they are waiting for the parts to come in. We have leased the standard Encore's before this GX and we never had this issue with them other 4 cars. They have been a great car, we are in hope that this is not going to become a major issue for the GX series. We made it only 9K miles when this happened. We where thinking of buying it when the lease was up, not sure where our thoughts are now. If this is a bad batch of fuel pumps or such...It could harm someone like the other lady with this issue in the middle of a highway, I hope Buick if needed will inform others of this danger and involve a recall to keep and save lives, so far everyone's been lucky???

Purchased my 2022 Buick Encore GX from Alexander Buick, Oxnard CA. on July 14th, 2022. On August 4th, 2022 (3 weeks and 273 miles later) was driving in the fast lane of major freeway 101 in Southern Ca.. Without any warning the car died. How I made it across two lanes to my right to get off the freeway without a seconds notice to the many cars and semis behind me I was able to veer a dead car to the side of the road with no accidents and no loss of life (mine.) Car was towed to dealer and just informed this morning that it is a faulty high pressure fuel pump. Online I have seen that this is an issue with GM. I do not feel the dealer is in any way responsible as the car only had 6 miles on it when I drove it off the lot. Dealer called and will fix fuel pump. I am afraid to accept this car and will never feel safe in it but I do not know at this point my full rights or recourse.

Electrical System,Unknown Or Other1 complaint

1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Answer: I only have 34,200 miles on my 2022 Buick Encore GX and when I put my car in park, I get a warning message on the dashboard telling me "Shift to Park" but I am already in park and my car won't shut off. Why at 34,000 miles? 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Answer: What if the car thinks it isn't in Park and starts rolling hitting a child, another car, or building? 3.Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Answer: Yes, and it is a known issue with the make and model car I have a 2022 Buick Encore GX but no Recall has been made. This is dangerous and needs to be a recall. 4. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Answer: A "Shift to Park" message comes up on dashboard even though in the bottom right corner it has a P that it is in park. The computer doesn't recognize it's in park.

Power Train,Unknown Or Other1 complaint

I have a 2022 Buick Encore GX with 34,200 miles and I put my car in park but the dashboard said Shift to Park. I tried several times to put it in park but it wouldn't recognize it was in park. The car also wouldn't cut off. I reversed and went forward and back several times trying to put it in park, but it wouldn't see it was in park. I called the dealership and they said jam the gear shifter really hard forward and it would recognize it until they could see the car. The only appointments they had were 2 weeks away. I can't use my car for 2 weeks. That isn't right. It shouldn't have done this at 34,200 miles! Also if the computer doesn't think it's in park then it could roll and hit and injure a child, another car, people etc. GM/Chevorolet shouldn't build cars with known problems. This is a serious Safety issue. The car isn't safe.

Wheels1 complaint

Within first couple months of ownership we had a wheel insert come off. We had it replaced at dealer Dec 2022 and noted it was two small bolts holding on the insert to actual wheel. The screws (2) appeared to have sheared off and are in line with brake rotors, calipers, and wheel itself when dislodging. The actual insert goes forward and can hit other cars and damage finish and other items as a projectile. We then had another do the same thing on different wheel 12 months later. Same issue. Same resolve as metal screws/bolts go directly into plastic insert which has no metal lining and no protection against breaking from stress, cleaning, and high speed turbulence thru this area. Less than a year later and we now have one missing insert that came off during highway, one loose we removed and found one bolt missing and sheered plastic, and a third one that is loose. Dealer will repair and replace under warranty but would not put on lift and check all inserts. There are approx 5 inserts per 18 inch wheel. This is a safety issue as the bolt will come out of fall into the wheel brake system. It could get lodged into calipers or pads and cause harm at least. These screw bolts are small but larger than anything nominal.
